Well, I think that the story was indeed cute in the perspective of the dog worrying about his owner, and I like how you put something human to the dog which gives it a more round character to what kind of dog was it. Furthermore, there was a limit to what the dog which is in itself good and real because you don't expect a dog to know what a human knows.
However, you can put more character to its canine nature. Maybe comically, let the dog think about chasing a cat or the kind of food he is fed, and his relationship to the other dogs in the neighborhood.
In part with the rest of the characters, it points that the wife of the master does not show much affection to the dog as the master himself. This was pointed how the dog wasn't fed. It could be the wife was more preoccupied with her wife which can be the case but you could point how she is ignorant to the dog at that day even though its not the case. the child itself wasn't portray as active like any kid with a dog. Since the kid was the son of the master, then either the dog would be active in trying to play with him or that the kid is active playing with the dog.
Overall, reading a story in the perspective of a dog missing his master was an interesting and amusing one. You can express more emotion about the worry on the dog but it was an exciting read.
Lain Iwakura: If you're not remembered, then you never existed.
I thought that was very creative. When I first started reading it, I thought that the master had died, so I am glad that you kept him alive! My only suggestion would be to add more characterization to the dog. Maybe have him be excited when his master's family gets home because he hopes that his master is with them, but that is only my suggestion. Otherwise, it was really good!
