Novel Cover

Okay. So I've been having fun with GIMP lately, and yesterday I decided to make a cover for my novel. (Though I did make one already, I don't like it so I made a new one XP)



I hope you like it! Ironically, the only thing I dislike about this one, is that my name is on it -___-
I have one of those names, that never looks good on anything but a homework sheet....
But hey! I guess that's what stage names are for, yeah? Haha

EDIT: Okay, so I fixed the pixel-y white outline. Hopefully it looks better now :3

Hey there! Making book covers is fun. I totally know that it is. So if this is just for fun and you don't really care about improving it, okay. But if you do, we'll have to consider some things. Now, I don't know how to make a great book cover either, but I can tell when it just doesn't look like something you'd see from a major publishing house and on a bookstore bookshelf. There's something about the balance of white space, text positioning, font choice. Usually I imaging book covers that have a lot of blank space, less picture.

Mmm, I don't know. Why don't you look here with me? Here's some examples of how to handle it.

For one, the quality on the black half is kind of low, the way that white comes out around the woman's shoulder. Is that intentional? If so, soften it a little. I don't know what it is if it is intentional, but right now it looks like that little pixel stuff that ms paint picks up when you try to copy and paste a jpg image in it.

ALSO, the fact that you have one eye open and one eye closed is so creepy and it sets the cover off balance. It would be more attractive, in my opinion, if you chose one image or the other. You don't have to try to set out the idea of your novel on the cover, really, that idea of two different halves. Maybe think of something simpler: what has two halves or that juxtaposition without having to be edited on two sides? Okay, and why not an image of a nice mirror?

I don't know. I like it. I like that you put so much effort into making one eye opened, one eye closed, and I don't even know how you managed it. Like I said, if it's just for fun, GOOD. Keep it in the folder on your computer with your manuscript or even on the title page. Haha. But if you wanna learn a little more about making book covers for real, let's think about it some more.

Woah! This is really cool. I totally wish I could do this... I have basic photo editing knowledge... but not too much else lol. This is really cool and the contrast is nice. I think the only thing I would change is if you darkened the right a bit more too. She's so white that she blends into the background a bit. Other than that, this is really great. Nice work =]
