So here is my latest drawing I would love to called it "The last Good-bye". I don't feel myself proud of it though. I always feel hesitated when it comes to drawing portraits, but this time I've decided to challenge myself. I would really love to hear your comments because that would help me a lot in my next drawing considering portraits.

Sorry if the drawing seemed to be a little bit dark, I am not so good when it comes to editing photos. :smt105

This is actually very beautiful! I've had to say goodbye to my closest family and friends lately, and the look on her face just feels so familiar to me. I would suggest using darker colors for sad pictures like this, but I think you're very talented! :)

Hi Starlight! I like this, however I didn't quite get the message you were trying to convey, if I hadn't've read the title of the piece it would've resembled a girl waiting for a train. But once I read the title and inspected a little closer I noticed the shadow of a person in the train. I think what mainly confused me was your use of colour, for a scene that I thought sad once viewed properly, the colour was oddly optimistic. This may be your style, colour may be your thing but I wouldve maybe continued with that lovely rich purple in the back. Also, as your picture recedes use darker shades as it creates perspective, and lastly, watch your lines- but I think it just seems odd because the photo is taken at an angle. Pencil is a difficult tool and you're using It really well, but try for some different texture, maybe a harder pencil than a 2b although I know how you feel about the B's, I absolutely adore how they give in somewhere in between the page and your finger.
Well done! Its lovely!

Sorry had to edit coz I realized I completely missed the entire point, you were asking for portraiture tips. I would highly recommend looking at people or even through magazines and inspect peoples profiles. For example, her chin is a bit to convex and the nose is a little concave, see that? Little things like that are so minimal but they add to the overall appearence. Also, look at anatomy, remember the ear, neck, shoulder, chest and shoulder blade. Every human has them and they need to be put into every piece you do ;) happy drawing!

I thought you were hungry?

No. I'm dad.

Hey there =] This is really good. THe shading you did on the buildings and in her hair are fantastic, though I think I would have darkened it up a bit so you didn't see the streaks in the pencil. I think the only thing I would have changed is her face, but faces are so difficult I can't really complain. I'm not good at them. =] But the hair is fantastic and the proportions are phenomenal. Overall, really well done =]

Hey there!

I must say, I love the colours you used- as someone else pointed out, they are a little optimistic for the scene, but they still look fantastic together.

As you've asked for tips on the profile of the face, I guess I should get into that. Her face is a little flat, to be honest. If you look at a female profile such as the one I linked there, you will notice that the chin and forehead curves back from the nose. The chin is situated further back from the end of the nose, and the forehead slopes back quite dramatically. With your picture the woman's chin is too far forward, ending almost at the same point as the nose.

Her lips are quite flat, also- while a lot of people will have thin lips, and that I'm aware, don't be afraid to show the curves of where her mouth is. Even thin-lipped people tend to have a slight curve to their top and bottom lip.

Also I think possibly that the eye is a fraction too high, as the eyebrow on most faces tends to begin only a little above where the bridge of the nose ends. On your picture if we could see her eyebrow it would be significantly higher than her nose. ^^

Another thing that is confusing me is her hair- on one side she looks to have a rather standard fringe, but you can see it fanning out behind her face on the other, which suggests she keeps it long on that side. Your colouring of the hair is amazing however- I love the shine and the darker ends.

Overall this picture is very pretty- you obviously have a way with colour and shading, and a lot more patience than I do! The flaws with her profile are actually fairly minor- I was just nitpicking because you asked me to concentrate on the area. ^^ I know I have trouble with faces, especially feminine faces, and have to use stock photos as references whenever I try to do something realistic- otherwise all of my girls look like guys with mutant jaws. So don't be afraid to use a few pictures as rough guides for your art while you gain confidence. =D

Don't hesitate to PM me if you have any questions or such. ^^

Dear Starlight,

Your picture looks awesome! I think it looks very beautiful and as if she really is saying goodbye to one of her friends or family, or anybody she is supposed to be saying goodbye to. Or is that somebody is saying goodbye to her? I am confused

A few things that I noticed about your picture was:

1: I liked the hair the best. It gives the impression of straight and silkiness . . . in other words, I love it. I like the curls on the end too (I have some of those things on my hair as well). They looked nice.

2: Was her hair supposed to be black or brown? It could be dark brown, or glossy black in which all the lights are being reflected (that sounds kind of rude . . . I hope you get what I really mean?). Anyways, I think that it looks black.

3.The lighting wasn't that dark, but I have to admit that it was dark. That doesn't matter . . . it kind of made your picture unique. Or you could say that it was very dark out.

4: The curl of hair that is in front looked a bit strange. You might have to slightly change that.

5: I loved the hand. That is probably because I can never form the wrist properly, whenever I draw!

All, in all, I liked your drawing. Keep up the good work and never forget to practice.

Regards,
Nova

4: I like the detail.

And, it actually makes sense! :o

thanks guys for the reviews. And I loved the points all of you have mentioned considering the drawing itself and portrait-drawing tips. That would help me a lot.
