Chapter One
A sea of blood was spread before her, and it took all of her power not to give into this sea. Wave upon wave crashed on her, making her call out for her mother, her father, her brothers, but none could hear her. As the blood entered her mouth, Emiko spat it out, repulsed at the taste, so she told herself. Her dark head bobbed on the surface as she began to scream to the blue, blue sky. Her grey eyes were filled with tears as she screamed and shouted, begging for relief. She knew this was a dream, but she couldn’t help but feel the panic in her heart. She thrashed and kicked, trying to make it to some kind of shore. After what seemed to be hours of swimming aimlessly, Emiko finally stopped and floated with the current, drained from her exercise. She stared up at the sky with a withering expression, conjuring an image of him as she stared up at it. Yellow eyes met hers and she felt the hate boiling up in her belly and beginning to overflow, twisting and turning into a scream. She lashed out at the image, tearing at his face, a red haze blinding her as she did. Emiko began to fall into the waves, having them wrap around her as the image laughed in front of her. Her breath was shortened and it became harder and harder to breathe. It seemed that either her lungs would burst like two balloons or her heart would gallop through her chest, neither very pleasant. Her hands began reaching for the surface, but it was too late. She would die in this dream. This was the end. She would die. She would-
“Hey Emiko, we’re at the academy now.” An arm grabbed the sleeping girl’s shoulder and began to shake it to wake her. Grey eyes slowly opened and a hand moved to push black strands out of her face. She met the accusing green eyes of her sister, her blonde counterpart, and she sighed. She was tired and would rather read a book than deal with Hiroki’s anger. Even though she looked innocent, Hiroki would probably beat her senseless in practice if she stayed this angry.
“Thank you for waking me up and I’m sorry that you had to do that for me,” Emiko said, staring at the road behind them. How she wished that she could walk up that road and not enter the academy, but the gates were closed and they were shut in.
Hiroki sniffed, but said, “No problem. You can pay me back by carrying my bag.” In a flash, she threw two blue duffel bags at the raven-haired girl and walked ahead of her. When she noticed that Emiko was just now getting up, pulling them on to her shoulder, she tapped her foot impatiently and called out, “C’mon, we don’t have all day.” Emiko just rolled her eyes and began to follow the pixie-like blonde off of the bus and onto the academy grounds.
It was called Missitori Academy, a prestigious academy where many scholars have come from, or will come from since it had just opened that year. The main building was where the hunters were heading, a light brown building that looked welcoming to all who passed it. Emiko could feel a happiness surrounding this place and felt more relieved than she had in a while. She was a bit nervous entering, but as long as Hiroki was there, she would be fine.
The line of students made their way inside and met a very ecstatic man in the hall. His hair was tied back in a nice ponytail, mostly for maintenance than anything. His eyes twinkled with glee as he led the line to his office. When the man stood behind his desk, he finally spoke.
“Welcome, my darlings, to Missitori! I’m Mr. Keiden, the headmaster of this wonderful school!”
The room was full of scowls as they examined the man. He was too peppy, in Emiko’s opinion as she stared off at the wall. A few students seemed relieved about this, but the majority seemed to agree with Emiko’s opinion and regarded him with suspicion.
A tall boy with short brown hair and glasses was the first to break the tension between the headmaster and the student. “Ah, sir, why did you gather vampire hunters if you wanted to just open up an academy? And who exactly are you?”
Mr. Keiden just grinned. “Well, that’s simple my dears. I had to recruit the best in order to manage this school.” The group began to feel their confidence rise and there were a few looks that said ‘of course we are the best,’ but that was crushed when he continued with, “Sadly, they all refused, so I was stuck with this lot instead.”
This is about the time when 11 glares dug into him rather viciously, making him jump in surprise, as if he didn’t know what he did to get this reaction.
Another boy, the rather famous Masaru Hayashi, spoke next. “Sir, what is this academy exactly for?”
Mr. Keiden smirked, losing the glint and playfulness and earning even more suspicion as the air around him darkened. “Your parents have decided to help me in my quest for peace among the races. This is why you have been selected to merge with a group of young vampires.”
Emiko growled, glaring at this man. She knew him from the years of training she spent before the accident. He was a troublemaker, one always yearning for peace. He disgusted her, this Keiden. “Sir, you are delusional to think that there could be peace with those vile monsters,” she said quietly, anger reverberating in her voice. Hiroki put a hand on her arm when she spoke, to calm her down, but Emiko shook it off. She was not going to back down from this delusional fool, not if he would insult her parents’ memory by throwing her in a room full of bloodsuckers and expect her to get along. Her hand slipped into her pocket, where her gun hung heavily.
“Ah, Miss Reizei, I should have expected that you would be angry with this idea. However it could be good for the world to see that vampires are not that different from you or me.”
Emiko gripped her gun and scowled at him, daring him to make another statement.
Mr. Keiden knew the right thing to say at a time like this. “It will also give you the chance for you to learn the true abilities of the vampire who murdered your parents.”
Emiko froze, a choice of a lifetime standing before her eyes. She could avenge her parents and learn their power, or throw this chance away and most likely be taken down by the most dangerous hunter in the Organization. Slowly, her grip began to slacken on her gun and she glared at the man. “I want to watch their moves though,” she whispered, staring at the carpet as she spoke.
“Well you all may have that chance!” His voice was light and carefree again, a good sign. “The hunters’ dorm is next to the vampires and you all will be having the same classes.” After a few confused looks from the “younger” hunters, he clarified. “You will be having classes at night with the vampires, studying the same thing as they do. However, those who wish to may join Miss Reizei and stay in the vampire dorm with her.”
There was no one willing to do it. Finally there was a sigh and a small girl stepped forward, looking timid as she said, “I’ll stay with Miss Reizei in the vampire dorm.”
“Splendid,” Mr. Keiden said, clapping his hands and smiling. “Now that we have that out of the way, let’s get on with the tour, shall we?”
As the group was led into the school, Hiroki made her way through the crowd to the timid girl who had volunteered to go with Emiko. “Thank you, Akane.”
The red-haired girl only nodded, preparing herself mentally in order to face her fear without embarrassing her family or her name.
