Really short compared to some of the others, I didn't want this one to be so long, but I feel it's still too short, defiantly needs a revisiting later.
Chapter 9
The Green Eyed Man
It was a little awkward at first. Lydia was so attached to my arm I didn't really want to shrug her off. I knew it would be a turn-off for Violet to see her all over me. Funny thing was that, despite that, I didn't want her to let go. Unfortunately for me, like always, that very same thing happened.
It went dark and like the light in the refrigerator that you swear never goes off, she was gone. Oddly I didn't panic. In most situations I would freak out and run around in circles but something was different. Soon I realized that it wasn't bravery that kept me steady but fear. My body was completely still and I could feel that I was alone.
Despite it being pitch dark I still did my best to look around the warehouse. Of course, I couldn't see anything. A minute ago I was enjoying a haunted maze with my friends, and some enemies, and now I was in complete darkness, alone. It was with that thought there was a change in the environment. It was still dark but I could see my hands, my body, as if their was a light coming from somewhere.
As the dark continued to fade the source of the light became more apparent. My head, almost without thinking, shifted upward to the ceiling. Faster then I could have anticipated a strange light was falling from the sky and headed straight for me. Intending to move out of the way I looked forward but it was too late to move. Something hit me head, it felt as light as feather but shaped like a ball. The world before me twisted and turned in and out, the darkness and the light mixing together like a smoothie in a blender.
My eyes had to adjust to whatever it was I had just seen. When my head was back on straight I took a look at my surrounding. Almost nothing had changed from the room I was in before. The surface I was on was different then before. A orange light coming from below lit the room enough for me to make it out. It was a circular platform floating in midair.
I had no idea where I was, but I knew stepping off this platform wouldn't be my best idea. I creped over the edge of the small disc and peered below to the light. Below me was a massive pit of fire. Gulp. Standing up and moving away from the deadly drop I noticed two other things were in the black room with me. Identical platforms floated at least 20 feet from me on both the left and right side.
"What in the world is going on." I said aloud to break the silence.
"For you, Lucas, you can never get everything that you want." Emeth's voice echoed throughout the darkness.
"There is always something more out there, will you ever be on top?" Lydia's words pierced my heard like a knife.
"What exactly will you do to get what you want? How far will you go?" Violet's voice sent shivers down his spine.
"Your test is a simple one, make a simple choice and you will leave with not only your life but a special power to boot." Riley was the next voice to emit from the dark.
"Before you stand two platforms. One with Lydia on it." A figure on the left platform appeared in a puff of smoke, it was Lydia. "And Violet." Again, smoke revealed Violet on the right platform. Annabeth's voice faded in the distance.
"You can only save one Lucas. Who will it be?" Kite's words hurt the worst. What did it mean? I can only save one of them? Does that mean the other has to die?
"For this test, your power has been given to you. Save one and only one. If you cannot choose, they will both die. If you try to save both, you will die along with them. You don't have much time." A new voice passed through my ears. It was deep and sounded as if two people were speaking at once.
"What is going on? I have to choose only one?" Panic was in my voice.
"Yes. Be quick."
My mind raced with a thousand different thoughts, fears, feelings, you name it. I had gained some kind of ability that would help me save one of them. What was it? How was I supposed to save them with a power I was not sure how to use?
"Pick me! You love me don't you Lucas? Who is she to you?" Violet begged at me.
"Don't listen to her! I love you. I would never leave you." Lydia cried out.
"Both of you shut up! I won't choose you hear me? I don't know...I don't know how I feel how can I possibly make this choice?" I screamed into the air, hoping the strange voice would respond but nothing ever came.
I looked over to the begging Lydia and Violet. It was strange to think about. I didn't know Violet any more then Lydia, I had feelings for Violet, stronger then that of Lydia yet I couldn't bring myself to make the choice to kill her. I wanted both of them. Perhaps that is the test I thought. Maybe I'm supposed to save both.
"I choose" I paused, holding my breath. I scanned Lydia, then Violet. My mind began to think of ways to get them from there to here, and so Lydia started to levitate above the platform. My gaze switched to Violet who always began to float.
"No! You must choose one!" The voice boomed across the room.
"Shove it!" I gently moved Lydia and Violet towards me and over the pit of fire below.
"Congratulations, Lucas." The mysterious person said gently. "You have failed."
The platforms started to shake violently, I could no longer keep my footing. By losing my concentration I had taken my eyes of Lydia and Violet who were now hurtling toward the pit of fire.
"No!" I screamed in despair. The platform I was standing on disappeared into dust as I was thrust toward my death to the fires below.
It was a long way down. As I descended I looked for Lydia and Violet, but could find neither. I had failed. Faced with the choice between two people whom I liked, but barley knew, I could not make a decision with who to save. I felt like I deserved to have both, to have the ability to be with both. It's not over though. No, it's far from over.
