Don't actually ever take them yourself (let someone else do that), make sure the lighting isn't all boring (faces with shadows look better), try to get the picture taken when you're not expecting it (you'll be more yourself -if you can't do that then make sure you don't look directly at the camera when the picture's taken), make sure the pictures are taken in your natural habitat -not always in front of a computer (or with a white wall behind you) -it gives your picture more character and keeps it non-cliche/ cheesy.
