Spoiler
Background of the poem: earlier this week my friend was telling me how frustrating it was for her to buy a Father's Day card for her dad because he has never really been a "father" to her. Since I am a daddy's girl I had a hard time understanding what she meant -- so I wrote this poem to help me understand more. Please help me with edits and Happy Father's Day to any dads out there :)

I call you dad because I'm supposed to
but you've never been a father to me.
I love you because I was told to,
but you never showed any love for me.

Throughout my childhood you were absent,
unless you were yelling at mom.
Causing me to cower in fear,
while waiting for you to drop the bomb.

I went through life thinking it was normal,
that fathers were just scary adults.
Towering over everyone else,
freely spitting out insults.

As I grew up and saw other dads,
I finally came to understand.
Everyone is different,
Dad is a label not a brand.

I'm basically I'm trying to say,
you failed at your job.
All you ever did was break me,
and make my chest throb.

So Dad i hope you can realize
what made all of this so hard.
And why you are receiving this,
instead of a father's day card.
Love is like a butterfly, it settles upon you when you least expect it.

This is very beautiful...if somewhat heartbreaking. I had only a few nitpicks:

I call you dad because I'm supposed to
but you've never been a father to me.
I love you because I was told to,
but you never showed any love for me.

Here you use "me" as a rhyme for "me"--a big no-no. Try to find another word that rhymes--there are plenty of them.

Throughout my childhood you were absent,
unless you were yelling at my mom. (this makes the syllables fit better).
Causing me to cower in fear,
while waiting for you to drop the bomb. Nice!

As I grew up and saw other dads,
I finally came to understand.
Everyone is different, this line doesn't have enough syllables.
Dad is a label not a brand. Love this!

I'm basically I'm trying to say,

This whole stanza needs to be reworked. Lines 1, 2, and 4 don't have enough syllables.

So Dad Ihope you can realize
what made all of this so hard.
And why you are receiving this,
instead of a Father's Day card.

You need to go through this and think about syllables. Each stanza should flow with the correct number of syllables in every line. Because this is a rhyming poem, it is especially important that it read with the right number of syllables.

I love this message, especially your last stanza. It is beautiful, heartbreaking. Great job!

This stanze is a little weird sounding, because you don't rhyme, only repeat words

Throughout my childhood you were absent,
unless you were yelling at mom. This makes me feel really bad for the kid, I hate fights.
Causing me to cower in fear,
while waiting for you to drop the bomb. Cut out while, it'll flow better.

I went through life thinking it was normal,
that fathers were just scary adults.
Towering over everyone else, Start it with Always, I think it'll make this stanza flow better.

As I grew up and saw other dads, Maybe instead of saw other dads, say saw kids with their dads, shows a relationship
I finally came to understand.
Everyone is different,
Dad is a label not a brand.
This is my favorite stanza, by the way.

I'm basically I'm trying to say,
you failed at your job.
All you ever did was break me, Me and say don't rhyme, unless that's what you were going for.

So Dad i hope you can realize Capitalize I.

All in all, I loved the poem. Very sad, you did a great job portraying emotion. Happy fathers day!

Hello, I liked this poem, I am sure many people can connect to it.

I really like this part of the poem:

I went through life thinking it was normal,
that fathers were just scary adults.
Towering over everyone else,
freely spitting out insults.

The flow in some parts of the poem could be improved but the emotion is portrayed very well.

Hey, there!
I liked your poem for a number of reasons:
1) It's simple and easy to read, which helps get your meaning across,
2) It's heartfelt and potent, with language that adds to, yet doesn't complicate, your poem,
3) It has an honest tone, and I feel like your message reflects this,
4) I too am a "daddy's girl," and can't imagine what it's like not to have that support, so your poem really affected me in that it explained that situation really well and compassionately.

I enjoyed how you took the loneliness and fear and abandonment of a child and conveyed it so accurately in your poem; I feel like the strongest part of your poem is definitely your voice, which is fresh and honest. Without it, there wouldn't be much of an emotional appeal, which seems like the point of this piece, so great job there!

There are some issues with flow in the poem: I think some lines were just a little bit awkward in their phrasing, but it seems like the previous reviewers covered that pretty thoroughly, and they should be simple to fix, if you so choose to.

These introductory lines are probably my favorite:

Jessa wrote:I call you dad because I'm supposed to
but you've never been a father to me.

I feel like you grabbed the reader's attention so skillfully and heartbreaking-ly right there, and they stand out for me than anything else in their poignancy. :)

Excellent work, and keep writing!
