I got this idea from an idea-generator that told me to write a story about a glass. Enjoy
She burst into the house, screaming, ‘enough is enough, John! I'm tired of you and your games." Her voice was strained. It was obvious that she’d been crying again. For the fourth time today.
“What?! Are you just gonna sit there?!” Gina screamed again.
He sat there twiddling his thumbs, emotionless. He picked up the glass in front of him, and dragged his pointed finger around the rim. He knew that this wasn’t an appropriate response. He just couldn’t take responding anymore.
“I know what you did. Don’t play games...” She walked toward him where he was sitting in the dining room. The room with blank walls, and a bare table where he sat. She’d taken everything here already.
Why does she keep coming back? he thought.
“You think I don’t know?” she said. A small smile spread across her face, “Oh I know. I know-”
“You’re delusional, Gene.” He smiled widely at her, and leaned forward in his seat. He held the empty glass between his thumb and forefinger, and laughed. “You’re crazy, Gene. Now, I need to get out of my house and go visit that therapist you’re in desperate need of.”
Her smile dropped. She stared at him for a full two minutes, her face blank. He stared back, unfazed.
“What did you say?” she said, her voice without inflection. She didn’t wait for an answer. She stormed into the kitchen next to them, and stood smack in the middle of it.
“What did you say?!” Her voice rose higher, hysterical. She burst into tears. She rushed to the cabinets, and started breaking glasses against the floor. One by one by one. Each crash would’ve made a normal person cringe or jump up, but John didn’t move from his seat.
He sat forward in his chair and waited.
When she was done she walked slowly back into the dining room. With her back turned away from him and toward the door she said, “Was that crazy enough for you?” Her head was turned to look at him now, her expression enigmatic. Her quiet and empty voice made him chuckle nervously.
He was scared for a moment.
But he bounced back easily, and with a grin he said, “Bye darling.”
She didn’t react towards his condescending smile. Gina left, closing the door carefully and slowly. John sat where he was for a full hour, rubbing his thumb against the side of the glass. When the phone predictably rang, signalling another desperate call from his beloved, he sat still in his chair. He didn’t smile in satisfaction as he usually did, he didn’t get up and answer her call, forgiving her and all the horrible things she’d done; he just sat.
When the machine picked it up, he could hear Gina’s shaky voice say, “John? Are you still there? Don’t be mad. You know how I am,” She gave a pathetically self-deprecating laugh. ”Pick up.” His response was throwing his empty glass against the floor, loud enough so she could hear.
She hung up the phone. He smiled faintly, and leaned back so his head was against the back of the chair, his head tilted towards the wall. He fell asleep, losing himself to the emptiness.
