Hello there =] The color is a bit overpowering in this one, and the lines could be a little bit smoother. Other than that you have a nice piece here =]
First off, I have no idea how to use gimp, so I probably won't be able to go down to the technicalities of it all. But I can tell you what I think of it and what needs a bit of work on.
The colours you used are all really bold and stand out quite a lot, not that there's anything wrong with bold colours of course. But when you use bold colours all together, it's as if the cover's shouting at me and everything's competing for my attention. I think that you could add some more subtler colour into it. To even it all out a bit. Balance is good.
With the YWS part, it doesn't look straight, the 'S' is a lot lower than the 'Y' it's as if it's sinking. I think that the letters can be fixed a bit. Another thing I have to say, with the underline and maybe the letters as well, I think that it would be a lot better if they're all done in one colour. Or if not one colour alternating colours like, having the 'Y' as red, 'W' blue and 'S' as blue again. Or something along the lines of that. At the moment,it's all seemed a bit too loud for me.
Also the part with 'The pen is mightier than the sword,' That part seemed a little wonky to me. The 'pen' bit tilts down a bit and the word 'mightier' tilts up. Also, the lettering is not all the same size. For example the second 'e' in 'pen' is a lot bigger than the 'e' in 'The'. The letters in the 'than' part is also thinner than the letters in 'mightier'. I'm not sure if all of that is done on purpose or not, but I kind of like my letters to be even and constant.
But I did like the basic design, it's simple, but it's effective. I also like the black background behind the 'YWS'. I also liked the bottom half and how it had that stained glass feel. I thought that was really good.
Overall, I think that the colouring and writing could be fixed up a bit. The lines could also be made smoother a bit like tydecker777 said. But, I really liked the overall design and background. Simple, yet effective.
