“17 to 1”
I hate the way we met
Because it shouldn’t have happened
If I had listened to what I had been told
Then I never would have gotten up the nerve
To say hello
For the first time
I hate all the times we talked
You made it so easy
You made it seem special
And because of that
I thought you were special
Which made me blind to the truth
I hate that you didn’t tell me yourself
And I had to hear it through a friend
That tells me you were a coward
And you didn’t care
About anything
About me
I hate the day I cut you out of my life
Deleting your existence
From my life
Like it would heal an open wound
But I wish I hadn’t
So I could talk to you now
I hate that I cannot get you off my mind
You come into my dreams
And haunt me all through the night
You are in everything thought
Every idea
But I don’t want you to be
I hate when I compare myself to your friends
Because I know I’m not as funny
Or as pretty and skinny
Or as ‘cool’ to hang out with
That makes me feel like I don’t deserve you
Truth is I probably don’t
I hate how she talks so lightheartedly about you
She tells me stories
And I feel nauseous
I can’t tell her because she wouldn’t understand
So she doesn’t know
How much your memory hurts me
I hate it when you wear bright colors
In the body of dull faces
It makes it so easy to spot you
And when you coincidentally walk by
My group, I force myself to look away
Because I want to pretend you’re not there
I hate all the things
That remind me of you
Inside jokes and the smell of February
Thursdays and history textbooks
The glistening sea and night sky
Disneyland and long talks
I hate music
And books, even my own,
About love and boys and girls
Which I didn’t hate before
Because they make me wish
For something I will never have
I hate writing now
The one thing I once thought
My life would depend on
Because I remember when
I told you my dream
And you thought it was great
I hate the days at school
When I see you and you wave
Smile, and say “hey”
And I don’t know whether I should
Because you seem so happy
And it kills me to let you walk away
I hate having to admit I’m wrong
That’s always been my worst habit
But I can’t blame you
For not feeling the same
I am the one to blame, I don’t know
What to say besides “I’m sorry”
I hate that I can’t tell you any of this
I feel that you would understand me
Would help me
But you might be scared
And that’s the last thing
I want to make you feel
I hate thinking about the future
And how I might fix this
Wreck between us
Every time I imagine what
Might happen
It ends in disaster
I hate thinking about other boys
Because even though you don’t
See me like that
I will always think of you
First
And they never compare
I hate writing this
Like it will set the end
In stone
But I think it will
Help me somehow
I pray it will
Of all the things I hate
There is one exception
I could never hate you
No matter what I think
I can’t explain why
I don’t feel that way
