Hi. Everyone calls me Silver. I joined today, and I figured that the best way to get started was to ask other, more experienced people. I'm really excited at joining YWS and I hope to meet a lot of good writers. As it is, do any of you more seasoned writers have advice on how to get started? Do tell.

Hello! Welcome to YWS :)
Well, when I first came, everyone was exceptionally nice (and still are! dont get me wrong) and joining made me feel like I was part of a community I actually wanted to BE in. Basically, I just posted a work of mine and waited for it to be "reviewed", that is read and commented on. The senior writers & even the juniors helped point out mistakes that could be fixed from my short stories and that's how I settled in. YWS is going to be sunny, it's going to be warm, it's going to be like home :) So welcome once again & if you have anything (absolutely ANYTHING) you want to ask, or any work of yours you want to have reviewed, feel free :) Have a nice day (:
PS: How old are you?
Cheers! x

Hmm, what Huff Puff said was right, but you can't just sit around and wait for your work to be reviewed. That would be boring! :D
To pass the time, you can look around the site, find some stories or poems you like and review those! It's not that hard really, just say what you liked, what you didn't like, and why you didn't or did like it. Also, if you find any mistakes in someone's work, then be sure to tell them!
There is an informal rule on this site on the whole principle: the more you review, the more likely other people will review your stuff.
Anyways, welcome to YWS! I hope you have a great time!

Thank you very much! I do think I am going to enjoy it here, so I might as well go read some stories. I will take your advice, Jenthura, and read some stories. There's got to be at least one out there I want to post on for starters. Thanks again! :)
PS: I am 14.

Well, you have to review to get points, which are necessary to post what you're written.

If there's anything you don't want reviewed, head over to the forum (I think it's the writing activities one)--there may be a thread where you can post it.

Snoink is a good person to go to for advice--she's very helpful, sort of mother-hennish, really nice, likes to help newbies.
Nate is the founder of the site, so he can answer pretty much anything, but I think he's pretty busy.
Kyllorac's a moderator--she's good to go to if you want someone to really pick at your piece. (Her "other name" is "picky, ruiner of fruit".)
MeanMrMustard isn't a mod and doesn't review /that/ much, but he's good to go to if you want someone to pick your song or poem apart piece by piece. (He is what you call a /real/ critic.)
Kamas is also a mod, and pretty nice, but she seems to like creeping people out (in good fun) ((see her profile pic for an example))--I'm not as familiar with her.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it's a place to start.

Also, head over to the site map (sitemap.php) to find the site rules.

Or, we'll watch out for you! :D

My advice is write what you love! I kind of adore writing those weird, quirky stories, so I do that and I looooove it. I've tried to do other genres and stuff and never quite got into it. So! Whatever you love, do. You'll be happier as a result!

Do you have any stories floating through your head now?

Oh yes.... Quirky stories indeed. I've actually been writing things on another forum for a certain book series, but most of what you get from that kind of forum concerning reviews is along the lines of: It's good. Write more. I think posting them here will be a nice change.

Yay! I love quirky stories! And you'll get some reviews like that, but most of them will be quite to your liking, I am sure. ^^

That's what I hope for. ^^ Especially on forums like that, there is a group of people who write fanfics, all based off the book series, so it's more of your story being one in a million. Now, writing calls, and I must answer! I do believe I am going to love this place.

Hey Silver *shakes hand* I'm Kay.

I'm sure you'll do great in the writing world. One thing I've found that is exlusive to YWS is something called Storybooks. There's a whole tab for them. Basically, one preson sets the storyline and gives a profile. You create a character and write parts of the story in your character's point of view. I know these really helped me develop my writing skills, and maybe they'll help you too.

Anyway, if you have any questions, you can always talk to me.

Happy YWS-ing!

Kay

Hello!

Pretty much what everyone else has said. This site has some very seasoned readers and writers. They know what they're talking about, yet at the same time, they never make you feel inept. Out of all the writing sites I've joined, this is definitely one of my favorites. I'm sure you'll love it.

By the way, my name's Ayla.

I'm rather newish too, but I've already come to love this site. Don't feel shy about posting your work!
