Half Asleep

It's strange, the things you think about when you're half asleep. The world is like another dimension, like a conscious dream state. You can see, feel, touch, smell and communicate, but all the while, you are not fully awake.

Your mind is in a Limbo of sorts. Drifting between the real and imaginary. Things that seem dull and random suddenly become beautiful, like patches of blue blotting a cloudy gray sky, like snow melting to reveal patches of green grass, as winter fades into spring. Ordinary things catch your eye. Colors become vibrant, sound is faint and distant, but still all very real.

Floating like a raft out at sea, you are on a natural high. Ordinary is unusual and strange is beautiful. Real is imaginary and unconsciousness is conscious. But still, be cautious. Fore the mind can play tricks on the physical being, as nothing here is quite what it seems. With eyes wide shut, you wander invisible to everyone around you. In a haze, you struggle tiredly to break through.

In this twilight state between sleep and awake the mind and body suddenly escapes. Like an out of body experience, the mind triggers delirious thought and muddled form. Like a blinding snow storm, lost and bound, the mind is lost and can't be found. The eyes scream words without a sound.

Time freezes and moments fleet away. Hours seem like years in a single day. Insomnia is the longest dream in the world, with no way of knowing when it will end. But, like every dream, you suddenly awake. Reality shakes you back to life as you reach for the bedroom light to reveal the world as it truly is-Just another day in a long line of yesterdays.

Hello. I'm Masque and I shall be reviewing your work today.

Alright. The first thing I noticed about this is that it's not exactly a poem, but I find it interesting that you categorized it as such. I can see it being reformatted into a poem quite easily. Also, the sentences rhymed in certain parts and not in others which was a little strange, but almost effective in it's own way. Hmm...

That aside, I loved it. I feel it really expressed how one feels when you're half asleep. Being an insomniac myself, I could empathize with it quite easily. The metaphors and imagery were beautiful. Just one problem I noticed here:

With eyes wide shut, you wander invisible to everyone around you.

This sentence doesn't quite make since. I believe it should be either "wander, invisible, to everyone..." or "wander invisibly to everyone..."

Anyways, a very nice piece of work you've got here. There's not a lot to critique. I would try chopping it up into lines, more like a poem, just to see how you like it.

Good work!

Thanks for the review. I know it doesn't really have a very poetic formatt. I literally wrote it late at night when I was having one of my insomnia episodes. So, it's a bit sloppy. I'll try to rearrange it into a poem to make it make more sense. Thanks again.

Hey there, Greg. (: Here to review this for you, since I've already liked it. x) I'll begin with the small things I wish to pick out. Comments, suggestions, etc.

Drifting between the real and the imaginary.

I think this would just sound better if you added the second the to it.

Colors become vibrant, sound is faint and distant, but still all very real.

I like this a lot because I think anyone who has ever been half asleep and in that whole type of daze can say this is exactly how things are to them. Everything seems so distant, yet still so within reach of their senses. It's a very ethereal feeling, and I can appreciate the simplicity of how you described it. It fit in nicely with this whole piece.

In this twilight state between sleep and awake(,) the mind and body suddenly escapes.

This is another really beautiful line. This is like the moment of REM where you're most relaxed. You explained it so poetically, I loved it.

Like an out of body experience, the mind triggers delirious thought(s) and muddled form.

I wasn't quite sure if you meant "delirious thought and muddled forms", with an "s", or "delirious thoughts in muddled form." I guess it sound okay either way, but you might want to clarify this sentence a bit.

Like a blinding snow storm, lost and bound, the mind is lost and can't be found.

A truly beautiful metaphor! Love it.

Insomnia is the longest dream in the world, with no way of knowing when it will end.

Right here you use the word insomnia. I don't think this fits, because the definition of insomnia is a disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, hard to stay asleep, or both. And you're talking about being lost in sleep, and the wonders of resting in such a calm and relaxing state. I would try tweaking this a bit so that it fits with the points you are making, versus contradicting them.

Reality shakes you back to life as you reach for the bedroom light to reveal the world as it truly is[space]-just another day in a long line of yesterdays.

Again, I think this was overall all just a very unique piece and it was so well written. Great job, and I would encourrage you to just keep up the awesome work. ;)
