Chapter 5: Surprise!!
Deep in the dark, flaming pits most commonly referred to as Hell, Zack was currently getting ready for his new day at a new school. He was kind of bummed, he would miss Hostile Academy, even if he did hate it there. Especially the witch by the name of Danielle Firr, also his ex girlfriend. She just is always trying to make his life hell. (no pun intended) But right now he had to go see his best friend Trey McGee, and tell him about his leave of absence. Jumping the fence and crossing his best friend’s yard, he goes and knocks on the door.
“Trey, open up. Dude I got to talk to you.” he yelled to the thick black knocker. At that the door opened, revealing a tall man. It was Trey. Trey McGee, what can I say about him. He’s Zack’s best friend, they are like brothers. They have known each other since....forever. But you already know that. Standing in the doorway, Trey takes up about most of the frame, with broad bronzed shoulders a 6’3 stature. And as he stares at his friend with concern his blue eyes glint like crystal. The unusual thing is, true to his demonic nature, his skin has the tint of red, like blood. The crooked smile would make any girl swoon, except me. But right now his face is worried about his best friend.
“Hey dude. What’s up?” he said, leaving the door ajar.
“My dad is trippin’, dude. He’s made me participate in some stupid experiment of his. So I have to go up North and go to school.” he sighed. “But you can’t tell anyone.”
“Alright. But do you really got to go?” he said looking at his friend with hurt in his eyes.
“Yeah dude. I do. But I’m only going to be there for a semester. Then, I’ll be back and we can kick off senior year the right way.” he said smirking, knowing it would cheer Trey up.
“Yeah!!! You know it!!” Trey bellowed, hugging his best friend. “But you know you are going to have to tell me about the honeys, because you know I heard there are some sexy chicks up North.” They both laughed. Little did I know, that he meant the school he was going to was mine.
That morning, I woke up dreading to go to school. I just wanted to go curl back up into my bed and be dead to the world. Unfortunately, I got up and took a shower and headed down the stairs. Only to be assaulted by the smell of buttery waffles, crispy bacon, and the syrupy sweet molasses of mom’s famous homemade syrupy. I was halfway out of the door when my mother called me from the kitchen.
“Jazmyn, are you going to stay for breakfast? You know, act like you live here?” she said, eyes twinkling. Yeah, now you see where I get my attitude from.
“Yes, Mom...wait Dad told you about his stupid experiment, didn’t he?”
“Yeah, Is it that obvious?”
“Just a little.” I laughed, sitting down in my usual place. She made me a plate and went on cooking the rest. Then my cellphone rang. It was Toriah.
“Hello. Girl I’m outside. Come on, hurry up before we are late for school.” she said sounding a little excited, for what. I don’t exactly know.
“Okay. I’m coming.” I say hanging up the phone. “Mom, I got to get to school. T’s waiting for me. I love you and thank you for the breakfast.” Smiling, my mother kisses me on the cheek as I grab my favorite white coat with the black stripes on it, heading for the door. As I open the door, a skinny Asian appears. She has spiky black and silver hair that sticks out from her scalp, deep gray opals and the whitest smile, dentists love her. The girl in my doorway is my best friend.
“ Hey.” shes says with a goofy smile on her face. “So tell me about this guy.”
“There’s nothing really to tell. I met him yesterday when I went with my dad. I yelled at him. He bought me ice cream and gave me a ride on his motorcycle. I told you this last night.”
“Yeah. okay. “ Toriah said with a sarcastic look on her face.
“Really, that is all that happened.” We were halfway to school by then.
"So what's his name?" she asked hamming it up, trying to be funny.
“Zack. Wait didn’t you already ask me that question?”
“Yeah. But I wanted to see your face when you said his name.” she laughed sticking her tounge out at me.
“Stop!” I whined, mock punching her the arm lightly. That made her laugh even harder. By then we got to school. We strutted through the doors just as the warning bell rang, signaling to get to homeroom. We struggled to get to our lockers in the traffic jam. I got my books and closed my locker. Toriah and I walked down the hallway bumping into people left and right. And just like when we first met, I bumped into him.
“Sorry.” I said to air, not really paying attention to who I was crashing into. That is when he looked at me.
“Jazmyn?” he asked incredulously. That is when I turned to actually look at him.
“Zack?” Then Toriah, did something I never thought she would. She rushed me past him, looking at him suspiciously. I looked at her in shock. “What the hell, Toriah? Why did you do that?”
“He gives off this weird vibe.”
“So?” I said disgustedly.
“Just stay away from him, please and thank you.”
“Okay.” I said smiling sweetly. When I say ‘okay’ that basically means ‘Yeah, ok! Whatever! I’m still going to do what I want to do.’ Toriah knows this but I think she forgets. As I walked back towards my locker to get my books, he came towards me looking like he just saw a ghost. He looked back behind me, expecting Toriah to come back around the corner.
“ What was that for?”
“Don’t know, my friend is kind of crazy.” I said laughing.
“Anyway I didn’t know you went to this school?” he asked, leaning into me and leaning on the locker. I almost couldn’t focus, his dark scent was cutting off my air supply, and making my head swim. I had to gulp trying to hold my breath before I passed out.
“Yeah. I didn’t know you went here either. Actually I don’t know anything about you. “ I said trying not to stare into his liquid sun eyes. I have no clue what he is doing to me but I couldn’t stop thinking about how close we had become. How his broad, muscular shoulders blocked my view of everything, and his bronze reddish skin sparkled in the light. And damn! Those lips! I wanted to kiss him so badly.
“Today is my first day.” he said batting those long black eyelashes making me swoon. That is when I realized, he was flirting with me. And I was becoming one of those girls I despised. You know, the one’s who get all weak when any guy says something nice about them. They are commonly known as sluts. I am not one of those. Then he does something so gentleman-like.
“Let me walk you to class. I want to talk to you some more.” he said smiling and guiding me by the small of my back down the hallway.
“Okay.” I said trying to hold my breath. Walking down the hall, we talk ferverently. We talk so much we almost forget where we were going.
"You ready?” he laughs looking at my stubborn face.
“Ha. I was born ready.” I say with a twinkle in my eye.
