Chapter 3: The Letters

She kept an eye on the clock. Twenty minutes before they had to arrive, she shook Alexis awake, telling her it was time to go. Alexis grumbled irritably. Not at all liking the fact they were going to the doctors.

She was almost completely taken over by shock when Rosa picked her up and carried her to the car. As Rosa leaned over to buckle the little girl, the woman could feel the heat running off the poor child and made the decision to get there as fast as her beat-up car could get them there.

She got into the car and started the ignition. As she pulled out into the street and began the five-minute drive to the hospital, she asked softly, “Alexis is your last name really Angemon?”
Alexis turned and stared out the window. A tear slid down her face as she whispered, her voice sounding broken, “Yes..”

Rosa’s eyes turned tearful as she whispered, “Then you are the child of Robert and Linda Angemon. And my god-daughter.”

Alexis went still; her face turned blank. Then she broke out into a wide grin saying, "I have a godmother?! Why didn't you come see us?" She spoke the last part a tad sadly but the smile still stayed.

Rosa felt tears fill her eyes as she whispered, her voice soft and comforting, “Your parents were in hiding, child. I was to be your guardian should anything happen to them. I can’t explain who they were hiding from yet. Its not safe for a girl of your age to know things like that. I will tell you when you get accepted into The Magical Academy, whenever that should occur.”

Alexis was silent. Guilt seared through her again, before whispering, “Thank you, ma’am.” She was thinking of the many things her parents did that seemed odd, different from other people. Like the runes her mother had cast before she died. Tears spilled down the child’s flushed cheeks. She watched the scenery go by as the silence stretched on for a few minutes. Both were lost in thought, remembering things that held very many sad memories.

She slipped the mask in place. She didn't want Rosa to see her fear. She held back her tears as they parked in front of the hospital.

Rosa got out and unbuckled her seat belt. When she opened the door to the passenger side, Alexis cried out, “No!!”

Rosa looked at the child, and said coaxingly, “Come on, Alexis. The doctor will make you better. Don’t you want to be better?”

Alexis tried to keep Rosa from unbuckling her seat belt, crying, “I’ve been bad!!!”

Rosa frowned, truly mystified by those words, “You didn’t do anything, child.”

Alexis fought helplessly as Rosa pulled her out of the car and shouted, her voice breaking as tears streamed down her face, “I killed his father!! He was hurting because of me!! He deserved to do what he did!!”

Rosa’s eyes widened with shock before she caught Alexis. She tightly held on as she lifted the child’s face so they were eye to eye. She saw the guilt and the sorrow that haunted those pearly orbs. Slowly it dawned on her. She was talking about what happened to the stranger.

“Alexis, listen to me,” She watched as the little girl tried to pull free and continued, her voice turning more authoritative and motherly, “That boy’s father was trying to harm you. You acted out to protect yourself. There is nothing wrong with that. That boy had absolutely NO right to hurt you in any way. Nor are you bad for what you did, okay?”

Alexis felt tears fall as she stared into Rosa’s brown eyes. They were dark but they held the truth. She could see the words the woman had spoken to be from the heart. She felt the guilt ease but the grief stayed.

Sobbing, she wrapped her arms around Rosa’s neck and cried, “I’m sorry!”

Rosa gently held the child. Rubbing Alexis’s back she soothed, “There’s nothing to be sorry for child. That had to have been so horrible for you to see. Your parents wouldn’t want you to hurt yourself like this. You need to live life and do what your best at.”

Alexis simply buried her face in Rosa’s shoulder and for the first time since her parents’ death she allowed herself to grieve for them. She missed them so much it hurt. Slowly, she calmed down and promised to herself she would do her best to be happy with her life.
Slowly, she calmed down and Rosa began walking towards the hospital.

Walking into the wide front doors, Rosa demanded to see Dr. Karasu. The nurse quickly rushed down the corridor to the back, walking up to intercom. She didn’t seem to notice the strange man moving quickly away.

“Paging Dr. Karasu.” she said in a rush. He eyes kept glancing over at the child in Rosa’s arms, whose face was pale, before turning towards the floor or the ceiling. Sweat was slipping down the little girls face.

A young man appeared, walking out of the E.R. He had a gravity about him as he walked into a room. All eyes turned from what they were doing to glance at him. He gently took Alexis from Rosa’s arms and said, “Follow me.”

Rosa followed him into a small hospital exam room, as he laid Alexis on the exam table. He pulled on some latex gloves and began to check her temperature and breathing. Frowning, he noticed her fever was at 102ºF and her breathing was very ragged and uneven. He gently examined her neck, and chest, before asking her to open her mouth.

As he examined her throat he said, “I believe she has caught the flu. I’ll give you a prescriptions for antibiotics that you need to give her at least three times a day, preferably after she eats. You should make sure she gets plenty of liquids and rest. If her fever doesn’t break or rises in the next two days, bring her back.”

Rosa nodded as the doctor filled out the prescription slip. She finally said, “Thank you, Doctor.”
The doctor smiled, his brown eyes sparkling, “It’s okay,” With a quick grin at Alexis who looked at him, eyes wide with awe and curiosity, he told her, “ You take it easy now. No running around playing pranks on other kids.”

Alexis grinned. Her eyes seemed to light up as she said, her voice soft, and quiet, “I don’t play pranks, sir. I like to read.”

Laughing, the doctor ruffled her hair saying, “I’m sure you do. That and I can’t say no to such a knowledge hungry child. Just read as you can but if you get tired or get a headache, stop and rest, okay? Can you do that for me?”

Alexis beamed. Her smile seemed to lighten the doctor’s mood as she said, “Of course I can! I’m big!”

Rosa chuckled as she picked up the child, and said, “Yes well all big girls need sleep. So it’s best we go home. I’ll get the antibiotics tomorrow morning before you wake.”

Saying good-bye to the doctor, she pulled Alexis to her feet. Together they walked out. As they got into the car, the little girl muttered weakly, “Do you think Mommy and Daddy are looking over me?”

Rosa pulled out of the parking lot and answered, “I’m sure they are, child. They must be so proud of you just like I am.”

Alexis leaned her head against the window, the cold glass working wonders for the fever. She muttered, “Thank you, ma’am.” She closed her eyes, and drifted into sleep.

Rosa watched the traffic carefully and when she reached the end of the road she turned left and pulled into the driveway of the Orphanage. She glanced at Alexis who was still sleeping. She got out of the car and went to her side.

Unbuckling the child again, she carried her into the house and up to the room. Such a very frail very light little girl... like a feather.

Rustling the covers as she turned, Alexis began to awaken. She heard the sound of a door closing. Opening her eyes, she realized that it was already morning. Groaning, she pulled the covers around her, not wanting to leave the warm cocoon of her bed. Downstairs, she heard the hustle of things being arranged, and knew Ms. Rosa had returned from getting her antibiotics.

As she sat up she realized with a startled thought that package was no in her hold as it had when she had fallen asleep. Glancing around, she couldn't see it on the bed. Looking over the side, she found it laying desolately on the floor. Relieved that it was still in the room, she picked it up.

Downstairs, Rosa set the prescribed pills on the table. Opening the door to the recently refurbished fridge, she pulled out a juice box. Searching through the cupboards, she found several boxes of cereal. Pulling one out at random, she found that it happened to be a box of Fruit Loops, which were in fact Alexis's favorite. She gathered the juice, cereal, and antibiotics, heading up the stairs.

Alexis stood in front of the closet, grumbling about the indecision of what to wear. Rummaging through the closet, she found a pair of old jeans and a white tank top. With a shrug she began to get dressed. She felt slightly better than the night before and conceded going to the doctors had probably helped more than she would like to admit out loud.

As she closed the closet door, she saw Ms. Rosa walk in carrying the three items. Scrutinizing them, she pouted, "I don't want to eat!"

Rosa raised an eyebrow at her. "Oh, and who said you had a choice in the matter, Alexis?" She asked, smiling wryly.

Eyes widening at that, Alexis exclaimed, "But that's no fair!"

Rosa chuckled, handing over the items. Turning serious she spoke, "You will eat at least some of the cereal. You need something in your stomach for the medicine to work as it should."

Taking the cereal and juice, Alexis huffed. "It's still no fair!" She said, grumbling.

With the shake of her head, Rosa picked up the box. She stood back up to see Alexis finally caving in. As she walked over to the table, she noticed that there was a faint shimmer on Alexis's forehead. Pausing, she could faintly make out a L before it vanished. She stopped, dropping the box in her shock, 'She couldn't possibly be..' Rosa thought, chills crawling up her spine. This was bad, if what she saw was real, then she was more of a target than she had previously thought.

"Ms. Rosa, is something the matter?" Alexis asked, her head tilted to the side. Wide, inquiring eyes gazed at her.

Rosa gave her a comforting smile. "I'm alright child, I just thought I saw a spider." She lied, picking the package back up.

Alexis grinned, "Sweetness! Spiders are amazing! I wish I had eight legs!" She said, decisively.

As she sat the package in front of Alexis, Rosa chuckled. "Oh, but they're creepy." She shuddered at the thought of being in the same room as any spider.

"Nah uh!" Alexis disagreed, sticking her tongue out playfully.

With an amused shake of her head, Rosa sat down. She watched as Alexis struggled to open the pharmacy bottle. She took the bottle from the girl and uncapped it. Taking out one of the few pills inside, she handed it over.

A scowl on her face, Alexis took the small red pill. As she swallowed it, she grimaced. With a pleading look to Rosa, she traced the address stamp on the package. Seeing Rosa's nod of consent, she opened the package.

Peeking inside, slightly apprehensive she saw two letters folded neatly on a couple of books. The book was light blue. On the front was a corner of a picture sticking out from beneath the letters. Picking up the letters, she noticed that the paper was thicker and stronger than regular notebook paper. Curious now to as what was written on the paper, she opened the top one. She recognized the writing as that of her father's.

Dear Alexis,

I want to start by saying that I love you very much. If you have received this letter is means that either Allen or Qyx has found us. It also means we are dead and you have unlocked two of your powers. I am very proud of you, Alexis, that you have made it this far. Please understand that I cannot tell you everything right now, but I hope you have found Rosa. She is your god-mother. She will keep you safe until you can take care of yourself.

In this package I have given you two books. The first is the family photo album. It has been passed down over the generations and holds pictures up to four generations. In the back there is a summary of each person inside the album. I hoped that this will allow you the feeling that our family is always watching over you. The second is the family's book on the role of becoming the Head of the Family. I hope you may use this knowledge so you may be better prepared for the future. I hope you may use this for when you become seventeen you may claim the title.

I know you have a thirst for knowledge which can be a good thing. However, you must learn to not become so attached to it that it is all you do. Have fun. Be a kid. Don't let knowledge consume you. It is an excellent drive to move forward. I hope that you become your own person and that you enjoy your life.

Now I think it is time I ended this so you may read your mother's. She will explain things on magic, since I sorely lack the ability to explain the major principles. I wish you luck, my dearest Alexis. I love you. There will be more letters in the future.

Love,
Dad

Alexis wiped the tears falling from her face, not wanting them to smudge her father's letter. She soaked up the love and acceptance of her father, before setting it on the table. Once it was out of the way, she whispered softly, "I will make you proud, Daddy. " She opened the other letter, wanting more than anything, her mother's love.

Dear Alexis,

As your father explained, if you receive this letter it means one of our enemies have found us. I just hope you managed to get to Rosa, before something happened to you. I want you to know that we are always watching over you, sweetie. I love you and I hope you are happy and safe.

I know how much you love knowledge, so I have given you a book that will allow you to read on any subject. So long as you are seeking it for good intentions, or knowledge for knowledge's sake. If you are using it for your own achievements it will turn hollow or a note of denial. I hope this helps you. Also, I presume I should tell you about magic and how it works.

The first thing you need to know about magic, child is that it has regulations. The rules vary from family to family. From bloodline to powers. I will explain the rules you will be expected in a minute. The second thing you need to know is that at anytime you have been deemed by the Goddess, Alsa, to be using your magic against your rules she can revoke them. Depending on the offense she will decide whether it to be permanent or temporary.

So with that said, the rules sound easy, but nonetheless they are difficult to follow. The rules of our families are: One. Do not use your magic to harm someone else without valid reasons. Two. Do not use your magic to appear more than what you truly are. Three. Do not use your magic to harm nature.

As you are probably wondering, the reason the package arrived as it did. The reason is because we knew a day would come when you would not have us any longer. That one of the enemies would find us. As a precaution we created a pact with the Fireyas. This allowed us to watch over you in some way. One of these ways is through a package you shall receive every major holiday in our world. That also includes your birthday so no worries on that. Such as today, August Fifth. It is the full moon of August. This represents our family creature inheritance. It will allow me to speak with you in the other plane, also known as dreams, on this night only each year. I will explain more tonight. You will learn tonight what your powers are, but you will not come into them until you are at least seven and at most twenty-one.

Also, in the bag at the very bottom is a necklace. Guard it well child. It will keep your magic from being found by others. Unlike many people's believes, the Lykra magic is untraceable even when wielding a staff. The necklace keeps others from being able to track you through magical means. However, they will still be able to find you through scent or any other way that doesn't involve using magic. I hope you will use it well.

Before I forget, in order to look up our family heritage just whisper "Lykra or Shadow Faery" to the book and it will give you all the information you will need. Use the book well, my beautiful Alexis. I am proud of you and wish you success in everything you wish to become.

Love,
Mom

Sniffing, Alexis set the letter along with her Daddy’s before pulling herself together. Peering into the box she picked out the photo album. The smooth texture belied its old age. It felt cool against her hand and she gazed at the front picture. Her eyes filled with an unspeakable emotion. Her hands shaking, she gazed at the picture, recalling the moment. It was one her father had taken on her mother and her during the first day of spring.

The Angemon garden was covered with yellow and orange flowers of all kinds. Poppies, daisies, day lilies, honeysuckle, and plenty more. Alexis sat on the bench in her violet dress, swinging her legs back. She looked around at the flowers in awe. Moving her head to say something to her mommy, she felt her mother's hands stop her attempt.

"Hold still, Alexis. I can't braid your hair when you keep moving, silly/" Her mother chided, gently. Her voice was soft-spoken as her nimble fingers worked on the child's thick hair. Around the top of both their heads sat a crown of braided Buttercups and Daffodils.

"M'sorry." Alexis whispered, voice quavering. She held still, her head bowed, effectively hiding her eyes. They were beginning to tear up.

Pulled the child into her arms, Linda rested her chin on the child's head, muttering, "It's alright, sweetie. I'm not mad."

Alexis buried her face deep in her mother's neck. She could smell the soft scent of mint and pollen. Sighing in content, she murmured, "So why are we celebrating Spring with yellow and orange?"

She knelt in front of a patch of Buttercups, picking one free. Staring down at its closed bud, she imagined on what it would look like if it blossomed. She nearly relinquished the delicate flower in her astonishment. Its petals opened, sending a strong wave of freshly scented pollen in her directions.

Linda laughed, oh how curious children were. "We celebrate Spring using orange and yellow because of what they represent for my family. They mean joy and love. They represent an enduring and happy year ahead. Also, they reveal many changes and in hopes you shall transcend the hardships and find accomplishment in what you have achieve."

Linda ruffled her daughter's hair carefully, giggling at her pout. "Mooommm I just got it all pretty!" Alexis whined, teasing her mother as she scooted away.

With a sly grin, Linda stood over her daughter. She swooped down assaulting her with tickles; taking in Alexis's gasps of laughter.

"Mommy stop!" Alexis shrieked with laughter, trying to keep her body out of her mother's relentless tickling.

"Oh alright," LInda relented, laying down beside the girl. Her eyes sparkling with mirth.

The two laid down, fits of giggles escaped their lips as they tried to catch their breaths. They heard a door shut inside the house. They glanced at each other, knowing exactly who was back.

"Does this mean you and Daddy will stop worrying?" Alexis asked, out of the blue. Her eyes searching her mother's face. The tension was still there, that ever lingering concern.

Linda surveyed her daughter's unusually serious face. Giving the joy of her life a small secretive smile, she whispered, "We worry about you, sweetie. It's only raising a kid is a learning process. We just worry about making a mistake."

Alexis raise one of her black eyebrows, taking Linda off guard by how much that one action reminded her of Silas. Alexis let out a soft sigh, "That means you still love me, right? Since you are learning?"

Linda's smile vanished. She took hold on her child's chin and brought it up so they were face to face. Wielding a firm tone, she said, "We will always love you, Alexis Elizabeth Angemon. Do not ever forget that!"

Alexis stared at her mother, searchingly. Finally, she conceded that her mother's words rang true and nodded. She watched as her father came outside. He held a note, his face pale as chalk. She saw, from the corner of her eye, her mother's frightened look. 'What's so scary about a note?' She questioned, curious to her parent's odd reactions.

Soon the green grass and fresh scent of pollen turned to a dizzying smell of smoke. Eyes watering from the scent, she felt a cold voice in her head. It came out soft, but the pull of its gravity sent her reeling in fear. She felt her mother's hands grip her arms tightly as she slipped into a deep sleep.

Alexis shook her head, pushing away what was supposed to be a happy memory. That had only been a few days before. A few days before she arrived here. Sniffling she set the book down, and reached for the next one.

It was dusty and falling apart at the seams. The rough, red leather scratched her palms as she took it from the box. Blowing off the thick layer of dust, she coughed. The dust cleared the title which read "The Angemon Guide to Lord/Ladyship," by William Angemon. She held the book, reverently. This was the book belonging to her family. The importance of such an item clear as she placed it on the table.

Finally she reached for the last book. It was bound in black leather. Indented on the front were the words, "Alexis Elizabeth Angemon." On the side was an oddly shaped lock. It was assembled like a black faery. The eyes were a lighter shade of her own. Instead of a key there was two small indents in the wings that folded to lock the book.

Her natural curiosity took over, and she pressed her fingers against the indents. She was speechless when there was a bright green light and the little lock faery came to live and fluttered to her shoulder. Eyes wide, she opened it. Entitled on the front page was, 'The Complete Book of All Knowledge: Old or New."

She closed the book, her body shaking. Tears filled her eyes as she cried. Realizing once more her parents weren't coming back. Sniffing, she felt Rosa pull her into a tight hug. Clinging to the secure arms wrapped around her, she whispered, longingly, "I want them back!!"

When she pulled her into a tight hug, she spoke softly, "Please don't cry, sweetie. They wouldn't want you to be sad all the time." Her voice turning firm, but still held a soothing tone, "No matter where you go or where you are, Alexis, you parents will always be here." She pointed to Alexis's chest, where her heart was.

Alexis glanced up her, red, puffy eyes holding slight disbelief. "Are you sure?"

Rubbing Alexis's back, Rosa whispered, voice full of conviction, "Yes I do. I know they will always be there for you no matter what happens. You can count on them."

Alexis smiled, her sadness now gone. Rubbing her eyes, she yawned. Rosa chuckled as she went over to Alexis's bed. Laying her there, she placed a kiss on her forehead. The fever had finally began to decline. "Sleep well, sweetie."

Alexis eyes closed, as she began to drift into sleep. "I love you mother."

Rosa stopped in her walking to the door, turning to look back at the small child. "I love you too, Alexis."

As she closed the door, she whispered, "What will she say if I ask her about adoption?"

Pushing the thought aside for the moment, she headed downstairs. As she entered the kitchen she saw several unopened envelopes on the counter. Leaning over, she went through them. Near the bottom was a letter from Alexis's old school. Now curious as to what they would want with her, since Alexis no longer went there, she opened it.

The letter was short, but still had a heavy impact. A good one, nonetheless. With a slight smile she read the letter over. Allowing a proud smile to tug at her lips, she placed the letter on the fridge. This would allow Alexis to read it as well as remind her of the date.

Dear Rosa Andren,
Due to Alexis's high knowledge of our subjects, the board of education has decided to move her up a grade. This depends on how well she does on a test we suggest having her take on August eleventh. We feel she should be allowed to prosper instead of being hindered at the level she is currently in. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Waterfell

She pulled out a pot and turned the burner on. She idly, drummed her fingers along the counter, consumed in her thoughts of the child sleeping upstairs. She placed the soup in the pan and stirred. She allowed the cooking to calm her nerves.

Alexis stirred in her sleep, the package from the night before had slipped out of her grasp during the night and lied on the floor. Rosa was coming inside, returning from her trip to the pharmacy to get Alexis’ antibiotics.

Setting them on the table, she grabbed a juice box and a box of Fruit Loops and headed upstairs. Her mind wandered to the package Alexis had received and allowed a smile to appear. She was glad that her friends had managed to make a Quïéyås I have no idea what this is. You should explain. . As she opened the door to Alexis’ room, she spotted the child asleep.

The covers were hanging off the bed, her hair was sticking to her skin becoming slick How was her hair becoming slick? I assume it was slick with perspiration, so does that mean she was sweating? You never tell us. , and fell gently over her face as she turned, mumbling in her sleep. With a soft smile, Rosa gently shook her awake, placing her hand on her forehead, relaxing slightly for her fever had finally started declining over the night although it was still rather high for a child her age. This sentence reads pretty long. I would break it up somehow.

Alexis shifted, her eyes opening, as she glanced blankly at Rosa, yawning. Rubbing her eyes with her hands, that were trembling slightly This is a sentence fragment. . She glanced around, searching for something and couldn't find it. Glancing down at the ground she saw what she was after, the package.

Rosa knelt down and picked it up, handing her the juice and the box of Fruit Loops saying sternly, “Eat first then you can open it.”

Scowling, Alexis grudginglyThere are too many adverbs here, making your prose sound lengthy and slow. And they also aren’t necessary; scowling implies the grudging manner. took the juice box and watched as Rosa went downstairs, where she had left the antibiotics. Quickly she opened the Fruit Loops container and pulled out a hand full. As Rosa came in, she had finished most of the apple juice and a few hand fulls one word- handfuls of the cereal.

Rosa sat down on the bed beside Alexis, and opened the bottle of antibiotics, taking one out. Handing it to Alexis, she watched as the child took it from her, gazing at it curiously before swallowing it with the rest of the juice.

Rosa chuckled as Alexis turned to face her, looking up at her, with wide violet eyes. She felt her heart melt at the child’s innocent hopeful look. She gently moved the child’s hair out of her eyes and said, “Alright I’ll let you open it, so long as you promise to rest later.”

Alexis’s eyes widened, as she nodded quickly, not wanting to do anything to displease Rosa as she rested her head against Rosa’s shoulder, after she had picked up the package The way this sentence is worded is very confusing. Again, this is something that should be broken up somehow, since you have many thoughts going on here. Read it to yourself again, slowly, and figure out how to fix it. . Looking at Alexis, she smiled gently, before handing the package over to her, watching with amusement as Alexis’s eyes turned bright with joy.

Alexis gazed down at the package, soaking up the love and pride that came from it and carefully took off the tape and opened it. Looking inside she saw 3 remember I told you to always spell out numbers when writing books, looking rather confusing at first glance. Also, on the top, sat two letters and a few pictures.

Picking up one of the letters, she noticed the handwriting as her father’s. Opening it carefully so not to tear the paper inside, she pulled out a thick letter. She read it carefully and slowly.

Alright, up to this point I have one major concern. You use too many adverbs. You throw them in nearly every sentence and it really slows down the reading. I’ve been given this advice before by a reviewer, because I also had this problem. I was told to only use adverbs sparingly, when they weren’t already implied. Take these last paragraphs for instance. Alexis CAREFULLY took off the tape and opened the box. Picking up a letter, she opened it CAREFULLY. She read it CAREFULLY and SLOWLY. Do you see how you are only repeating yourself? After you establish that she’s being gentle and careful with the box, you don’t need to keep telling us that with every move she does. Once is enough.

Dear Alexis ,

I want to start out saying that I love you very much my dear child, and if you get this letter than we have been found either by Aston or Qyx. It also means that you have unlocked at least one of your powers. I want to say I am very proud of you, my child, but must ask you to understand I can’t tell you everything till you are older.
I hope that you have found our friend, Rosa, period she knows how to teach you to control those powers you will unlock, as well she is your godmother. Listen to her well, child The repetition of ‘child‘ is very strange. It doesn‘t seem realistic that someone would even speak like this, let alone take the time to write ‘child‘ after every sentence. . She will explain things when the time comes for you to know them. I have put in this package the book of our family’s beginner’s guide to Angemon Lord/Lady role, in hopes that once you are 17 you may claim the title of Lady Angemon and all it intails entails .
Also there is a photo book of your mother and I from our younger years until our deaths, and there are pictures of you as well comma my dearest Alexis. We know you absorb knowledge faster than others, even faster than our own families and want you to know, we hope you explore that knowledge you undoubtingly I don’t think this is technically a word crave This sentence as a whole is confusing. I‘m not really sure how things should be organized, but it would sound a little better to me like ‘We know you can absorb knowledge much faster than others, even faster than your own family. I encourage you to continue to quench this thirst, and explore the knowledge you crave.’ . Learn as much as you wish and do your best, semicolon, I think we have never been prouder for anyone than we have for you, our child. Whatever path you chose choose, know we are proud of you.

Love,
Your father, Robert Angemon Personally, I think it’s weird that her dad would sign his own name at the end. If/when you receive a letter from your parents, can you honestly picture them signing it ‘Love, your mom, Mary Brown’ instead of simply, ‘Love, mom’?

Alexis felt tears slid slide down her face, and she quickly put the letter out of the way of the falling teardrops, not wanting them to smear the letter of her father. She felt her heart lighten, her father was proud of her, he loved her even though they were gone. She felt Rosa gently stroke her hair, and relaxed against her and closed her eyes.

She allowed herself to let go of what had happened and made a promise to make her parents proud. With that goal in mind she pulled out her mother’s letter and began to read, almost overwhelmed by the love that clearly her mother had for her.

Dear Alexis,

Hi sweetie, as your father said, I hope you found Rosa, since she will be the best person for you to go to. She will love you almost or as much as we have. We are always watching over you sweetie, we are always in your heart and memories. Never forget that comma my daughter.
We want you to grow up with the knowledge you shall ever wish to learn This makes no sense to me. We want you to know that you will always know you will always want to learn. Basically, her mom‘s saying that Alexis will always know that she wants to know stuff. Yeah, it’s pretty confusing. What were you trying to say by this? . So with that in mind, I had found a book you would most defiinitely definitely (I copy and paste stuff into MS Word to see the red squiggles for misspelled words. It’s very easy to correct your own work this way) love very much. I created it to allow you to be able to read any book for any subject so long as it is from our families’ libraries or a subject anyone can learn The way you‘re explaining it sounds very confusing. What‘s the family library? What can be defined as ‘a subject anyone can learn‘?. With some extensive searching, I found out that we held a very old magic inside my family that I’ll explain in later letters. Just whisper the subject you wish to learn and it will show many different books, based on you knowledge of the subject. Beware, this might not always work, and is limited to your understanding of the subject. Even though I read through this part three times, I still cannot understand it.
If you want to learn about our family heritage comma just whisper, no comma Lykra and Shadow Faery. Those are the only subjects you will find will be able to read despite your lack of knowledge. I hope that this will allow you to improve that knowledge you always crave. Now there is a necklace sealed into a bag, on the bottom, it is my family’s heirloom and you rightly deserve to have it. Guard it well child, it is a very powerful amulet.
I have a few exercises that will help you control the sensitivity to emotions and people you are more than likely starting to experience. They will also help you to keep your thoughts from others. I love you Alexis and know you shall receive letters such as this on your birthday and on major holidays of our world, each time it falls on a holiday we will explain what it is. Like today, August 5th, the day of the full moon. The full moon of August represents to my creature heritage, the birthing of your powers. You will unlock the powers the Lykra and it is the few days I will be able to join you in that plane I don‘t think ‘plane‘ is really the best word. .
I will explain more tonight my child, but know we love you and we will always be proud of you. Become who you want to be and never stop searching for knowledge, no knowledge is unvaluable invaluable .

Love,
Mom

Alexis sniffed, allowing tears to fall, and like before, protected the letter from becoming smeared or damaged. She took out the books, and glanced at them. One was old, and falling apart, and she carefully set it down, reading the title ‘The Lord/Lady Beginner’s Guide of the Angemon’ by one of her ancestors, Willam Angemon. She held it, no comma reverently and opened it, careful not to harm the spine or the binding.

She glanced at the second book, the photo album, and smiled at the cover picture. It was the picture her mommy had taken of her of herwith flowers in her hair. The two of them had celebrated the beginning of spring in the traditional way.

She smiled at the picture, remember the violet dress she had worn that day, the smell of the fresh scent of pollen, the humming of the birds as the sun beamed down out them, cheerfully. Her fingers curled around the picture as tears of grief slid down her face, the impact of her parent’s passing hitting her suddenly and hard.

Rosa quickly picked the child up into her arms and rubbed her back as she cried, as Alexis cried, finally accepting that they couldn’t come back. Soon her tears were gone I can’t imagine that after a breakdown like this, her tears would come to a stop ‘soon’. and she realized she had their letters that would come and the knowledge they were proud of her and loved her still.

Shakily she picked up the photo album, the two books and placed the letters inside the package when she saw a bag. She debated checking it now then decided to do it later, as she was getting very tired.

As she placed them on a bookshelf she turned and glanced at the window above her bed and saw that possibly a few hours or less had passed since she had woken up. She walked back to the bed, which Rosa had got up from and was now learning leaning against the wall, watching her carefully.

She lied down and pulled the covers over her and whispered, her voice so soft Rosa barely heard it, “Thank you, mother.” Alexis spoke, her voice distant as she began to fall asleep.

Rosa stared at the child, her eyes held slight shock as she replied back, softly, “Sleep well, child.”

She leaned over the child the repetition of ‘the child’ and kissed her on the forehead and tucked her in. Gently she smoothed her hair back, and felt her temperature, noticing it wasn’t going down, but also it wasn’t going back up. She could feel the slight tremors that shook the child as she slept. With a sigh she went downstairs, knowing that she wouldn’t wake for some time.

Upstairs, snuggled under the safety of her covers, Alexis silently dreamed of a world of vivid colors and shapes as any five year old would. Only there was something special about this particular dream. They seemed to hold meaning, as if every one of them held a reason and purpose. As if somehow if she learned the secrets they told, she would understand many things, that would later become useful.

The color green seemed to cover the area the area of what? Of her mind, I‘m assuming. , almost like a fog. It hovered and then move on and hover hovered again. It seemed as if it was worry, it was that gut feeling this doesn‘t make sense to me, either. And your grammar‘s getting hard to follow. It feels like you‘re switching tenses on us all the time, . In a flash, a streak of red zipped across the surface of the dream, like a snake coiling around it’s prey, feeding off of fear. Slowly blue began to take control, almost taking over everything. It curled around every color, tying them together. It was almost like the desire to succeed, the hunger to be the best, to make someone proud of who they were she was. Next comma yellow began to sprinkle itself around the network of colors, like flowers of spring. It practically shouted joy and happiness. The yellow was bright like the sun or the smile that only a child seems able to master, the ones that lighten up the world. The reason people become parents.

The next color that worked its way in the connections was orange. It branched up like a tree, spreading its branches depending on the kindness they gave. The less you gave the weaker it was, as if it was a sapling. However, the more you gave the stronger the branches became, the more they twisted their way around the other colors. As of now it was small, but still a tree. Soon in came the color gray like small drips of rain, oozing sadness and grief like a plague. It soon spread, almost threatening to take over everything when white clouds began to peek out of the gray, like tiny figures of hope. The dream sequence was boring to me, and I didn’t really get what the whole point of it was.

Alexis tossed in her sleep, not knowing, almost 5 hours had passed This seems like it would be obvious. If you were sleeping you could not be consciously aware of what time it was. . Her fingers clutched tightly to the blanket that covered her, wrapping it around her tightly, as if to hide away the strange dream she was having. She let out a soft sigh as another color appear. Purple specks dotted the landscape, seemingly to move in a lost pattern, confused as to where it should or would go.

Downstairs, Rosa was sitting at the table in the green and white kitchen, her hands clasped around a coffee cup, her mind wandering to the young child currently sick and asleep upstairs. Since Robert and Linda had gone into hiding, she had lost all contact. She vaguely remembered seeing Alexis, she had been about a few weeks old then. Her eyes had been a dark blue, but apparently the had changed to the rich violet they were now.

Taking a sip of the coffee, she pondered the possibility of adopting the young child. She had always loved Alexis like her own, knowing that ultimately she was the only thing Alexis had that was close to a mother. And she hadn’t had time to settle down and raise a family of her own, knowing in her heart that Alexis was the only thing she had close to it.

“Well, I guess I should go check on her now.” Rosa thought to herself, standing up and starting towards the stairs.

As she went up, she made a note to call the adoption agency near by nearby to set up an appointment. She opened the doors leading to the other smaller children’s rooms, checking in on them, remembering that it was only Wednesday what does that fact that it‘s Wednesday have anything to do with what‘s going on now? . Seeing that they, themselves, were still sleeping peacefully she opened the door to Alexis.

She spotted the child still asleep, tossing slightly as she dreamt. Her face had some color back although it was still slightly clammy. She gently shook her awake, happy to see that the fever still hadn’t gone up, quite the opposite, it was going down, albeit slowly, it was still going down.

Alexis opened her eyes, staring blearily at her before mumbling, “Time to get up?”

Her tone of disappointment made Rosa chuckled softly as she said, “It’s lunch time, the young ones have already eaten and gone back to sleep. You need to take your medicine again, Alexis.”

She pouted at that and said, like every child has done at one point or more in their lives, “But I don’t want too to.”

Rosa chuckled as she picked her up, setting her down on her feet in front of her. She glanced at the child’s bare feet and went to the closet to find a pair of slippers. As she came out she noticed Alexis was at the bookshelf holding the bag from the package in her hands. She was trying to untie the knot, and seemed to having trouble.

Rosa moved towards her, and said, “Put the slippers on, child, period I’ll untie the knot for you.”

Alexis turned, almost falling over, her face was blank but a flicker of guilt entered her eyes as she said, “Sorry.”

Rosa frowned, confused to why the child was feeling guilty, “What do you have to be sorry for, Alexis?”

She glanced at me, her eyes flickering with some unrecognizable emotion as she muttered, “Aren’t you mad that I didn’t want to take them?”

Her violet eyes were confused and full of guilt, tears filled her eyes. Rosa pulled the child in a tight hug, saying firmly, “Alexis all kids hate medicine. It’s okay you don’t have to be guilty. I’m not mad at you. I’ll never be mad at you.”

Alexis was silent as they went downstairs, seeming to be lost deep in her thoughts. She still wore her clothes from the day before, having been too tired that morning to change or even change last night. Her hair was tossled tussled, looking like a wild mess. While her hair was perfectly straight, it was really horrible to comb when it got tangled as it was now.

Rosa chuckled at the memory of trying to comb the child’s hair when she got sick a few days after she came here. They had to wash her hair just to get it to agree with the brush and not have it come out. She heated a pan on the stove and placed a container of chicken noodle soup in it.

As it simmered she got out 2 bowls and glasses, handing them to Alexis who sat them on the table. As she was stirring she watched Alexis take out two spoons and placed them beside the table. She turned the burner off when the soup was done and let it cool. I think a lot of this story can be edited out. Honestly, you don’t add anything important by explaining how Rosa heated up a can of soup, or the colors that swirled around in Alexis’s dream. To me, the descriptions dragged on and I got bored. I love description, and I would rather have too much than too little, but it just doesn’t seem necessary to explain every second of the day. Why not just have Alexis pass out, and then end the chapter, and start it again when she wakes up to Rosa telling her she needs to take her medicine? That’s how I would do it, but of course it’s your choice.

She opened the fridge and pulled out a half empty gallon of milk, and poured it into the glasses, filling Alexis’s halfway, knowing she mostly likely would have trouble finishing just the soup. As she put it away she handed the hand towel to Alexis, who had just finished washing her hands in the sink.

“Alexis can you put the towel back for me, hun?” Rosa asked as she poured the soup into the bowls, watching out of the corner of her eye, as Alexis nodded, eagerly, and raced off to place it on the rack.

They ate in silence for a few minutes before Alexis asked, “Can you tell me about Mommy and Daddy, ma’am?”

Rosa looked at the child and said softly, “Of course, Alexis. You don’t need to call me ma’am.”

Alexis looked at her confused, and asked softly, “Then what will I call you?”

“You can call me Rosa.” she said as she watched the child as she nodded slowly, taking it in slowly before continuing on, “Your mother was my best friend and we considered each other sisters. We got into a lot of trouble at our school for pranks and sneaking off. Your father was a kind gentleman who spent a lot of time reading. I can remember greatly the time he started ranting on about the word “oh”.”

Rosa chuckled as she remembered his red face as he continued to rage on about it, “He said it was the lowest form of the English vocabulary right after the word ain’t. Always said you could be told you failed your test and you could say “oh”. Or that someone was taking your pencil and you’d say “oh”. He truly hated that word and detested it when it was said, even more so when someone wrote it down as they were writing. There should be picture I took of it took of what? in the photo album.” This is my favorite par tin the chapter so far. This felt totally original to me, and pretty funny, too. I never really thought about the word ‘oh’ before x)

Alexis was staring at her, her eyes sparkling with laughter, as she giggled, “Daddy must’ve been so funny back then.”

Rosa smiled as the child took the medicine and said, “Indeed he was, he did mellow out though when he proposed to your mother and then later on had you. They truly loved you Alexis and so proud of their daughter This sentence sounds odd.” I’m curious about what the medicine looked like. Was it in liquid form or tablets? Did it have a bad smell? Was it unpleasant to take? How much was she taking (how big were the portions)?

Alexis grinned as she nodded and asked softly, “May I be excused, please?”

Nodding, she watched the child walked up the stairs, and smiled to herself and picked up the phone and began to dial, knowing this phone call would change it all.

Alexis took the untied bag and took out the amulet and stared, lost in its beauty First, the repetition of ‘took‘ is noticeable. Second, you never told us that she received the necklace yet. It was mentioned in the letter, but I don’t remember her finding it yet. . It was a silver chain with a violet moon and white lily pendant. It glowed as she placed it around her neck, the clasp vanishing, forever leaving the power to take it off. A warm tingling feeling spread through her body as she pulled out the photo album and climbed into the bed.

Laying on her stomach, she flipped through the pages and found a picture of her father, with a red face, seeming to be captured in mid rant, and below the picture the caption read, “The time Robert ranted about the word “Oh.”

Giggling Alexis slowly gazed at the many pictures, drinking in the images of her parents as they grew and changed. She saw herself as a baby and growing up. The funny pictures her mommy had taken on the holidays sentence fragment.

Slowly the day began to pass and she drifted asleep as the sun began to set, the full moon of August 5th had begun. She drifted deeply into her dreams, not recognizing the changes that were beginning to occur deep within.

She looked around, confused, ‘Where am I?’ She thought as she began to wander around. The place was like a large courtyard, there were benches and trees lining the edge of the large square stoned background. In the center sat a fountain guarded by a lovely angel, it held a moon.

She watched in awe as the month went through the phases, turning from black to white. When it turned pure white, the angel moved, turning gray into color. The woman stood in front of the pond, her hair a rich blonde, and the same violet eyes as Alexis. On her back, there stood two beautifully made violet and white feathered wings.

The woman smiled at Alexis who stared in shock as she whispered, “Mommy?”

The woman nodded as she said, her voice soft, “I won’t be able to be like this always but I will still be here, even as a statue, so you may know I’m always here.”
Alexis ran to her mother, and wrapped her arms around her knees, crying. She was so happy her mommy was there and that she wouldn’t leave. She felt a hand gently stroke her hair, and lifted her face to see her mother’s gentle, loving eyes staring into hers.

“It’s ok sweetie. I’m here and I won’t leave. I’ll always be watching over you. I told you that.” She spoke, her hands gently stroked Alexis’s hair as they sat down on the stone, which was oddly warm.

“It’s my duty as your mother to guide and protect you. It is also my duty as your mother to tell you the duties as a Lykra and the powers you will gain, for everyone is different, and that includes you.” ‘It’s also my duty to tell you the duties…’ You definitely need to look up synonyms for words that you must use more than once.

Alexis nodded, wrapping her arms around her mommy, hugging her tightly as she said, “Now I’ve noticed from your memories you have control of Ice and Shadows. Ice is from me and Shadows is from your father. There will be powers you, yourself possess and the easiest way to find them out is by saying the words, “Såÿey Aíys.”

Alexis closed her eyes and focused on those two words and softly whispered them aloud, feeling a sudden rush of energy surge into her head, and winced, allowing her mother to gently stroke her hair. She felt her mother shift, as she let out a gasp of shock and Alexis’s eyes snapped open wide, her eyes were a dark green as she looked at what her mother saw.

All around them sat many figurines. Some melted away and others only grew bigger. Soon there was only eight left. Her mother gently rubbed her back as she gazed, absently at the figures and said softly, “You are strong my child. You hold a total of eight powers connected to both your father and my heritages. The six you don’t know are Necromancy, Healing, Writing, Art, Math, and Languages. You will find these things easier but you will need to work on them to be able to progress. You can’t just say you have them and not learn to use them or practice, then you won’t be able to use them at all.”

Alexis nodded and said, “So I’ll find them easier than other things, but won’t be able to just know how to use them. I have to practice. Will only these subjects be easier?”

Linda smiled at her daughter and said, “There will be subjects you’re good at and ones you’re bad at. Some subjects will fall in between. So to answer your question you will find other subjects maybe slightly easier than others and ones you will constantly struggle at.”

Alexis’s eyes widened as she nodded, understanding before asking, “Were there subjects you had trouble with, mommy?”

Linda smiled, her eyes twinkling, “Yes I had the hardest time doing Elemental Magic, was extremely difficult even with my Ice afinity. Now the sun is beginning to rise and you need to wake.”

Alexis nodded as her mother stood up and took her spot in front of the pond, the moon in her hands turned to a sun as Alexis watched the dream around her turn black.

Alexis opened her eyes and turned just as the sun began to peak through her curtains. A new day had begun.

Sorry I didn’t leave many comments towards the end, I was kind of short on time. This was a much longer chapter than I expected x)

The most entertaining part to me was when you were describing her father. He seems like a very good character, and it’s a bit saddening to know that he’s dead, and that no one besides Rosa really remembers who he is.

Hm, the dream sequences were strange, mostly the one at the end. It was very sweet, but I was having troubling trying to figure out if it was a magic dream, or just a normal dream.

Overall, this chapter was a bit boring to me. There was a lot of talk about her powers, which we still don’t know much about. From what it sounds like, she has inherited some kind of ancestral power that enables her to excel in a few subjects. I don’t know how any of this would be of use to a five year old, so I’m beginning to wonder where you could possibly take this story. Also, the magic books were confusing. Like I mentioned before, I read it several times, and I still do not know what you were talking about. It feels like the whole magic concept has a lot of rules and strings attached, so it’s difficult to grasp at first.

I’ll end my review with a quote from the chapter.
You will find these things easier but you will need to work on them to be able to progress. You can’t just say you have them and not learn to use them or practice, then you won’t be able to use them at all.”

You have talent with writing, you really do. But like this quote says, unless you work hard, the talent would just be lost. I have to say it again, even though I’ve said it a bajillion times already- you need to work on your grammar. It should be your most focused area right now. Not cranking out new chapters, not even reviewing, but studying the basic rules of writing.

If you are still having trouble, I’d suggest going to the Review For Food thread (if you need a link just ask) to get a second or third opinion on this.

Well, that’s all I’ve got x) If you have any questions, you know all you need to do is ask!
The bad news is we don't have any control.
The good news is we can't make any mistakes.

The idea that a poem was a made thing stayed with me, and I decided then that I wanted to be an artist, not just a diarist. So I put myself through a kind of apprenticeship in writing poetry, and I understood even then that my practice as a poet was deeply related to my reading.
