Chapter 2: Weird Science
The bell has rung for 2nd period. The halls are brimming full of kids. It looks like the walls are about to burst. People are pushing and shoving to get to class. In a classroom in the west wing of the school, Rayia is meeting her teacher, Kat's mom. Ms. Ramirez.
"HOLA MAMI!" Kat yelled, throwing open the door to the science lab and barreling past a skinny and pimply science nerd.
"Hola mija. Que esta haciendo aqui?" Ms. Ramirez asks in rapid-fire Spanish.
"I'm showing the new girl, Rayia, around the school." Kat's states switching back to English.
"Hello, ma'am." Rayia whispers, looking in awe at how young Kat's mother looks.
Lucinda Ramirez, an averaged height woman Hispanic woman with a warm smile turns to Rayia.
"Hola!So where are you from?"
"Suffolk, Virginia."
"Wow.You must be homesick, Virginia is a long ways away from here."
"Not really. I'm trying to keep an open mind." Rayia shrugs.
"That's good. Well has mi hija been nice? I know she can be a piece a work." she laughs winking at her daughter. Who folds her arms over her chest trying to hide her embarrassment. Rayia laughs.
"Shes been just horrible. Really mean to me." she says in a matter-of-fact tone, trying not to smile.
Kat is just standing there in utter shock and disbelief. For once Katrina Ramirez is at a loss for words. Which makes Rayia laugh some more.
"I'm just kidding!!! You are so gullible. You should of seen the look on your face. Priceless."
"You are so mean. That wasn't funny. And to think you're my best friend." Kat says smiling.
At that statement, Rayia just smiles, beaming inside.
Cutting the warm and tender moment short, Ms. Ramirez titters, "Good. Well the second bell is about to ring. So say goodbye Katrina."
"Ok."
"Wait. So you aren't in my class?" Rayia asks looking confused.
"Nope! I have Oceanography with Mr. Black aka Hitler." Kat rushes out in flurry of black created by her flowing crazy black mane that she is so famous for. Ms. Ramirez laughs, shaking her head.
"Don't worry you're in good hands"
Kat slips out the door just before the bell rings, as Rayia takes a seat at one of the front tables. Soon students start to fill up the tables two-by-two. The final bell rings two seconds after. As Ramirez is taking roll, Remy Hightower comes strolling in.
"Nice of you to grace us with your presence, Sr. Remy." Ramirez says with her eyebrow raised, marking him tardy on her attendance sheet.
"Hi to you too." he says smiling with a full smile, making the girl nearest to him pull her shirt a little lower.
"Sientense!"
Scanning the room, he sees the only seat available is one next to the new girl. He strolls over there taking his time sitting on the stool. He turns to face her looking at her profile. Sensing someone looking at her, Rayia turns.
"What?!" shes says looking a little annoyed.
BAM! Hitting him like a brick wall, Remy forgets how to function. His brain turns to mush, his tongue swells cutting off all speech, and instantly he starts sweating his body getting very warm. His breathing became shallow, like being near her cut off all his air supply. His vision started swimming.
"WHAT THE HELL??" He screams in his head, begging his body and mind to work together. Something on his face must of confused or frightened Rayia because she quickly faced the teacher. Minutes passed by slowly, it felt like years till the bell rang. They paid careful attention to Ramirez, trying not to be aware of the person beside them. With the tension so great between them, they didn't hear the bell ring. As everyone rushes out, the pair is frozen where they sit.
