Sailing the Desert.. and some photos

Saw some of the pics posted on this site so i decided to try my own




This work is a combination of Linocut and Photoshop. It is, according to my art teacher, incomplete, although i have absolutely no idea what to add. I am open to any suggestions. (Ship is done with linocut, rest is photoshopped)

Okay, here goes.
(I'm not sure if the first three photos were yours?)
1st- Okay, a little bleak and undramatic. I would have preferred a differant positioning of the table and pot.
2nd- This is okay, I think the focus should be in the front as opposed to the back.
3rd-Great detail. I would have gotten another angle, though.

For "Sailing the Dessert," the foreground sand does not match the overall lighting scheme. (Daytime sand in the middle of the night) It lookes great, esp. with the wind blowing the sand, but maybe you should try another color hue. Also, the ship looks a little "choppy," not sure if you can fix this though. Try a differant matte or rendering perhaps? I love the smoke in the sky, and the only other thing I would change about the positioning is maybe making the sand seem more "wave-like."
Very cool, you should write a story to go with it.

I entered this thread expecting to see a ship slicing through waves of ice cream and red velvet cake, and yet I see none. Oh--oh, I see. You've misspelled "Desert". It's a common mistake, of course, but I suppose that my review can mainly consist of a spelling lesson.

Desert=a geographical area with very little precipitation.
Dessert=a course of meal (typically sweet) that follows the main course (e.g. ice cream, red velvet cake).

As far as your photos go, the flower is my favorite. It's just very well set-up.

Also, your sailing the desert picture is nice as well, though I wish the sky had more detail.

Hi there! Heres what I thought of your pictures:

I.I truly do see what it is you were trying to do, but unless you have extreme contrast and good lighting, it really isn't much to look at! But I really do like your idea. If you can't get more contrast using your camera, take this picture and try editing it a little to make it a little sharper!

II. This one was very nice! I really like it when pictures have focused and blurred parts to it! My sister takes pictures like this all the time!

III. Again, I liked this one because of the blurred and focused aspects, and I also think you picked out a very nice flower to use as your model! Very nice!

IV. This one was actually my least favorite. The ship I must admit is very good, but the way it is placed in the water and the water itself just doesnt strike me! It looks more like its stuck in a big dessert. Although, you did a very nice job with the moon!

Well, here are some quick photography tips for the future:
I. If you have a bland picture, use lighting and contrast to spruce it up a little.
II. Avoid taking pictures where you can see the shadow of something off the camera (unless you added it purposfully).
III. Anything, no matter how bland or simple, can become beautiful. So, don't give up after the first five minutes. Take lots of time thinking of the best way to bring out the inner beauties of your object!

Anyways, I like these.
1) 4/5. I like the shot. It has good structure and color, but I don't quite get the meaning.
2)4.5/5. Like this alot. My only crit is that it is an eensy-weensy bit too close.
3)4/5 again, love it. But don't see the purpose.
4)4.5/5. LOVE IT. The only thing is that the clouds don't work well with the moon

2. loved this one. brilliant focusing of the camera, is it just me or is that ant laughing at you??? lolol
3. This was my favorite of your camera pics. loved how you caught the serene beauty of the natural environment, and the lighting suited the picture entirely. Brilliant
4. The ship in th desert reminded me of an anime I once watched. lol the detail that you brought out in the ship itself is amazing. I understand how hard Linotypes are to produce, I feel that you did a great job. The background imagery was unsettling, it made the sinister looking ship seem even more sinister. . . kind of like a pirate ship lol. perhaps you could add a little dock in the sand to suggest a disaster that resulted in a desert docking station.

I really like these, they're awesome!

1. It's an interesting idea, and I definitely think it could work with a little help. Right now it's a bit dull. I think if this could be taken in good sunlight, so there's a shadow, it would look much better. It needs some depth. Since you have Photoshop, I would recommend increasing the contrast, and try experimenting with textures a little.
2. I like the small focus here, and the colors look great. The only thing is I've found that photos like this tend to look better when the focus is closer to the bottom.
3. Love this one. The focus is really nice. If you wanted to spice it up a little, you could boost the green a bit, and some bokeh would look awesome here. But it's not necessary.
4. This is really cool. I don't know what your art teacher is talking about. I don't think it needs anything! I guess it feels kind of empty, but it's supposed to be like that, right? I don't know what you could add that wouldn't make it look weird. Sorry if that doesn't really help...

All of these would be much better if they were a little bigger. Especially the one with the ship.
Anyways, about that last one. If it's possile, try lightening the sky a little or darkening the sand. Also, putting a shark or a whale in the 'water' would cool.
The photos were great, but a little too small for me to see.

The ship was lino cut, which is a rather difficult art, and i would like to retain whatever i can of the original, so no editing on the ship.
The photos were a first ever.
