Self portrait (Now completed!)

School assignment involving tracing a picture of myself using Adobe Illustrator. And do not be fooled by "trace"; this image is the culmination of about 30/40 hours worth of work.

Tools were the pen tool and gradient mesh, with a few dozen Gaussian blurs and transparency modifications thrown in.

Comments (especially on shading) appreciated.

Hey Rosey.. This is pretty cool. I'm not particularly fond of the shading on the face though. I'm aware of how different software is with illustrating. I haven't used adobe illustrator, but I do work habitually with Adobe flash for my animation class. I love it, but it takes practice Perhaps it's the tones in color you used. It just doesn't seem quite right. Also, the nose seems a bit underdone. Maybe you could try touching that up a little.

SO much of awesome! This looks just as pretty as the real you!
So, I'll give quickie comments on the face and the shading since you haven't finished the vest.

Hair above her ear - Mmm, it ends like a dreadlock, and I'm not sure it looks okayish. Maybve you could make it more strand-y and add some little shading below hair/above ear.

Eye- So, I know lots of people whose eyes are no almost the same size, but I was hoping you could make it a wee bit bigger so that it doesn't pop out like this.

Nose - Those two dark lines, one is for the nostril and the above for the bridge, no? I think it'll look nicer if the one above is shifted toward the skin tone rather than gray.

Hair near shoulder - Needs more shading as it isn't seen on some parts. Though, I love the shading on the vest.

Shading on the face - Right now, it looks really good, but plastic-y. Is it possible to smoothen the edges of the different colours used?

Dang Lava doesn't leave much space to critique, eh?

Firstly, this is a lovely portrait of you, enhanced by your natural loveliness. Personally I find the eye-size difference rather endearing, because I've seen images of people with that adorable quirk sometimes.

Your left ear needs more shading, methinks. It looks sort of transplanted due to the colour difference between it and your face, and it is only one shade and would have more character if you could at least trace the outlines of the groves in your ear.

While I don't know how realistic you're trying to make it, you may want to blend the hair shades in more where brown meets black and where it frames your face. Also, your nose looks a bit off, but nothing major. I'd imagine it would take you a long time were you to redo that.

But all in all, I think it's fabulous, classes above any art skill I have at realism.
