Random Doodles (Updated 28/04/11)

I only started drawing last...December I believe. Then my Mum bought me all this art stuff and so I've kind of just been drawing faces continually. I've been trying out different styles, copying stuff, making my own stuff and just experimenting I suppose. I'm a little afraid to post because I don't think I'm that good but...what the heck!

So here are some that I've been doing recently. I shifted more into doing a sort of anime style of late to see what it looks like.

This is Lavi. He is a character from an anime called D-Gray Man.



I know the top of his head is missing in the second one but that's where the picture cut off...

This is Luffy from One Piece. He's a little bit off in places but it was my first attempt at a full body -


Mini Luffy! His hat is a bit dodgy but other than that I like him -

You're getting into anime. Nice. I did some anime in my animation class. It's the most realistic type of cartooning out there. There are so many tricks to drawing good anime. I'm not sure the route you took, but these all look very nice to me. Especially if you only just got into drawing. If you're this good, I would just keep practicing. You'll find how much better you'll get when you draw continuously. That and it's just a fun hobby altogether. So keep up the great work. And if it's anime you like, study the style more! I think you could probably be great at it.

First of all, excellent scanning! I'm sick of blurry, dark, grainy photographed drawings.
Anyways, on the actual art: it's good that you're tracing (or copying) since that will most definitely sharpen your artistic skill. I still trace, copy and reference whenever possible. For pictures that cut the tops of heads off, though, I try to work out the missing part myself, just to see if I can do it.
The 'randoms' are your own works, right? No references? If so, pretty good! I have a hard time drawing anime style art, and you've certainly gotten the basics of it down pat.
Your color is really great; expensive art materials really change the outcome. I'm guessing colored pencils, but here's a tip: try taking a wet brush to a freshly colored surface. Most of the time, the colored pencil part will blend and fade a little, making it look almost like a watercolor painting. Some pencils won't do this, so try to get colored pencils that are actually designed to melt with water.
Other than those points, you're good! Keep arting!

Here are some drawings of Zoro from One Piece that I did today. I dislike the sword one because the sword doesn't look like it's in his mouth and his head looks funny...but I'll put it up anyway.

Adam named the hat guy Rufus. I haven't coloured him in because I might work on him some more. You can sort of see that I took what I learnt from drawing one of the Lavi's and applied it here lol

They look like something from Pokemon. My bro watches it all the time. Anyhow, very good cartoon characters.

Great stuff, Beckers! The Zoro guy looks awkward because, normally, when putting a sword or knife in your mouth, the blade is clenched between your teeth, not the hilt. If your reference picture was like that, then I'm wondering what the original people were thinking.
Another thing I've noticed is that you've only drawn three perspectives here: profiles, straight-on's and 3/4's. Try doing, maybe, a picture from beneath the face...or from above. Anything new to stretch your artistic ability.

Hello there Becks.
Wo! You have improved a lot. Those zoro guys were awesome. Just that the necks were a bit longer than the usual other than that it was pretty much awesomeness. And here in the latest one the guy with the blue hair has some great expression.
It's time now that you stop drawing sharp edged faces and emphasize on the more detailed faces.

Jenth, Zoro does usually have the sword hilt in his mouth. In fact I think he always does. And I promise I will start trying to do different angles! lol

And ehte...I'm not sure I would be very good at the detaily faces...

O. M. F. G! IT'S LAVI!!! XD I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you! Sigh. It's just something about red-headed anime characters that make me turn into a rabid fangirl ^.^

Okay, so on to the review. First of all, these are very very well drawn in general and very well coloured, too. I like the way you coloured them, it's fairly difficult to shade with coloured pencils, I think, so you did a very good job with that. I'm thoroughly impressed with the overall outcome of each picture and you definitely have skills in this type of drawing style.

One thing I would work on is the shape of the face. You don't really define the cheek or jaw as much as you probably should, and it's just sort of one curved line. You could study how to put the curves in the right places with pictures, and references. It's very good that you're using pictures and drawing them because I've learned that you can find tips on improving and making your own drawings better when you're originally copying a professional's or a skilled drawer. I, too, use references most of the time (although, that's somewhat due to the fact that I'm crap when it comes to creativity ;P) and I've definitely picked up ways to improve myself.

I see that you're good with hair. My friend finds that hair is the hardest part for her and she tends to over do it, but you've got the hair down nicely and it looks very well done.
