1.
Throes of passion threw me not,
A sin I did not suit.
For I knew that love and lust
Bore only bitter fruit.
In all of my piety
I killed more love than made,
And on my revelations' night
Such things left me to fade
In the Depths of tacid night
Alive with sordid wanting,
A siren song came to my bed
And churned me with its haunting.
Like a spector made to tread
To some demonic kiss,
I took my moonlit footsteps
Like free Oddysseus.
Coming to a point of dark
So full and so complete,
I lost the sense of power
That motivates my feet.
Suspended by the melody
That urged my body on,
I stood before an angel
Like a little frightened fawn.
The angel took a woman's shape
With flawlessnes there found,
Body like a pillar,
Tall and strong and sound.
Her humming drew me into her,
She laid her hand on mine,
Her crystal gaze forbade me
To turn from its sheer shine.
Raising high her silver hand,
As if to ask the skies.
All at once the Earth collapsed
Down towards Satan's eyes.
The World was flying past my feet
As we sunk down to Styx.
Descending where no man had thought
That rock and flesh could mix.
As this came to end
I felt the still resound.
The marble Cavern filled my eyes
And spun me back around.
Trying to sound humble,
Her voice betrayed her worth.
"Here you see" She said to me
"The Pillars of the Earth"
2.
I turned to face the columns
Of shining marble stone.
Each in splendid detail,
Each to stand alone.
"See each pillar's bodice
Is made to hold its ground
In every man-shaped statue,
A truth, there, to be found.
I peered upon the left extreme
And there was carved a girl.
Rising from a mob of men,
Holding up the world.
Her dress was torn and ragged,
Her body cut and maimed,
"Defiance" said the angel
"Will keep away the shame"
"Defiance" I presumed
"Forebares a revolution.
How could Earth be held in place
By constant dissoulation?"
"Fire" She reminded me
"may burn and scar and pain'
But cleanses forests deeper
Than even loving rain."
Across the shining limestone
Another column stood,
Depicting all that's perfect,
Well and true and good.
Christ in all his suffering,
Baring his own cross.
Whispering to every soul
That nothing, yet, is lost.
"Although" She said "The column
Depicts our Lord, the Christ,
The honest, fonding virtue
Is that of Sacrifice.
We must bare the crosses
That we are born to bare,
To let the struggle be the light,
To let the people stare.
Largest of the Pillars
In Ivory and gold,
Is an image of two lovers
In each other's hold.
Drawn was I to the kiss
Of these pretty, loving busts.
All the world may crack and fall
Yet, love will never rust.
"I want to yearn" I whispered.
She cooed "And so you will.
I felt my body rushing
O'er crags and glades and hills.
Back into my silent bed
Where I once, loveless, lay.
But I would wake to find my heart
Brighter than the day.
