The Widow's Voice

Washing dishes one lonely day,
You heard a whisper;
Somebody called your name.
From your heart, you felt it
And you turned quickly,
Dropping a plate.
Smash! It hit the floor.

You said, quietly, 'Who's there?'
But of course, there came no reply.
You thought it was my voice.
Deep within your mind you knew
There was no sound; only your
Imagination running wild.

Sinking to your knees,
You sighed, thinking about me,
And the way everything used to be.
You didn't want to cry,
But the tears came anyway,
Spilling onto your lap,
Leaving drip marks on your T-shirt.

Why did you leave me here all alone?
You cry between your sobs, Why?
You wished for a happy, care-free life
And you had it, for a while, with me.
But now, all that is left of you,
Is a lonesome, childless widow.
It's my fault, I'm sorry.

People call you crazy, mad.
You claim to hear whispers,
Murmurs at random moments
Saying your name.
So you lock yourself up, bake cakes
Wash dishes and laundry, the same
Clean china every single day;
Just to pass the time.

You collect the broken pieces
Of the smashed plate on the floor,
And chuck them in the bin.
The water empties from the sink.
But you know, deep deep within your soul,
You heard my voice.

I know you are right.
The worst feeling you'll ever feel,
is sitting next to the person who means the world to you,
knowing that you mean nothing to them--Unknown
