I screamed… I screamed as if my life depended on it…
It was January. I was driving home from my boyfriend’s house. It was our six months anniversary. He bought me a little stuffed teddy bear with a blue shirt that had his name on it. The road was frozen. My car slipped off and drove right on top of a frozen lake. The ice was very thin and couldn’t support the weight of the car. It cracked and the car sank to the bottom of the lake.
I screamed… I screamed as if my life depended on it… It was cold. Freezing. I could hear my own bones shivering. I held the teddy bear in my arms. I felt lost. I was lost. But nobody knew. Nobody except… I started crying… Wait, let me explain.
“Okay, I have a killer exam in the morning, I’ll see you later” I said. “Okay Honey… I love your name, Honey” Tony smiled. I love his smile… I kissed him and got in the car. I decided to take a shortcut through the woods. My phone started ringing. »Incoming call: Zack T.« Zack was my ex-boyfriend. He never got over us so he called me like once every two weeks. “Hey, Honey, what’s going on? Where are you?” “Look, Zack, you’ve been doing this for seven months, it’s really getting boring! And if you have to know, I’m driving through the Witches Woods. Please, do me a favor and don’t call me anymore!” “Okay, I’m sorry, you won’t hear from me again…”
I started crying. My tears were falling on the bear. I realized that this were probably the last moments of my life. I was rude to Zack and he’s the only one who knows where I am… The bear was completely wet and it looked sad. Its lifeless eyes were begging for help… I was in the lake for almost an hour. I was feeling sleepy but I knew sleeping isn’t a good idea when you’re almost frozen. But I couldn’t stay awake… Freezing…
I woke up in a field of white roses. My nose started to itch from the intense smell. I felt safe and loved. And then, somewhere in the distance I saw two people, a boy and a girl. They looked happy and in love. He was showing her two necklaces with sapphire pendants. She smiled, took one of them and put it around his neck. He did the same for her. Then I realized what I was looking at. Last year, when I was dating Zack, he bought us both sapphire necklaces. After we broke up, I gave it back to him. I was cold again. And then…
Freezing. I opened my eyes. I was in my car. There were no roses on the seat and no smell in the air. Just desperation. Desperation and fear all around me. I looked at my phone. Somehow I didn’t remember to check if I could call someone. Unfortunately, there was no signal. The only thing I could do was to watch the time pass by. It was 3:47am. I’ve been lost for four hours. It wasn’t cold anymore. Or maybe I just got used to the coldness. I fell asleep again… Crying…
All I could see was the sapphire necklace. So shiny and beautiful. But I couldn’t reach it. It was so close, yet so far. Perfect, but distant. Then I saw Tony. He looked scared. Worried.
Crying… I was still crying. I was never religious, but I started to pray. I wasn’t saying the usual prayers. I just spoke from my heart. I thanked God for my seventeen years on Earth and for everything He had given me. I didn’t ask to be saved, I didn’t ask for anything. I talked to him for hours. It was 10am. I left Tony’s place last night to study for an exam and now I’ve missed it. I was thirsty. I didn’t have anything to drink. It was cold again. But not like before. It wasn’t freezing, just cold. My whole body was cold, almost lifeless.
I woke up three days later in the hospital. I was in the ICU. The nurse came in and told me that my parents called the police when I didn’t come home. They searched everywhere, but couldn’t find me. Then someone called Tony and said that he should check the Witches Woods. When Tony asked who’s calling, he got a strange answer: the Sapphire. When the nurse finished her story, I was shocked! I knew that there was only one person in the world who knew where I was. Zack.
When I got out of the hospital, I called Zack and apologized for my behavior. He’s my best friend now, and for my last birthday he gave me the sapphire necklace. I’m still dating Tony, and he never lets me go through the woods alone.
