The lights at night,
static glimmers too far
to reach for - to hold
like amibitions once fought for;
the values of a soul no more.
Once inspiring, twice depressing;
my heart beats timidly as it sinks
through thoughtless clouds below -
an unfaltering shroud of misplaced faith,
'tween aspiration and disbelief.
The lanterns in the darkness,
the long degraded hopes
still dying, still crying for the lost dreams:
the lonely and forgotten ideas of the broken.
The stars, stolen from our minds;
the most minute of humanity's
longing for understanding,
are fading into the darkness
of tyranny, and opression;
'tis the mighty's resolution to seize power, to rule us
like the moon to the stars, as our dreams to the dark,
as the dead of the night to the chill in our hearts.

Thanks to Coral, and also Zan (I pre-emptively took his advice whilst he was reviewing xD) for their very helpful feedback on this poem, and helping make it flow a little better - that's not saying much though, since it rolled on the tongue like a cement tire on your favourite bicycle.
