She lies in silence staring at the ceiling. A song by her favorite band pulses through her ears. The beats bump, the words repeat: she falls deeper into thought.
While the plays the songs over and over, she smiles, thinking. The only way to keep her mood at least slightly cheerful is to put them onto repeat. She sits up, staring at nothing, and rolls herself to one side of the bed.She reaches into the bedside drawer pulling out, proudly, an industrial razor, she sits against the headboard of the bed and her eyes smile. Her face remains the same emotion: nothing. She raises the razor and sets the end on her wrist lightly. Then slowly she presses down and drags the blade across her wrist leaving behind a gash. It's about a centimeter deep cut. She groans at the pain, throws her head back, letting the high of pain take over. She repeats it over and over, getting higher and higher.
Miles away, with no awareness of her, he sat. Face to the screen of the computer, he typed four hundred words a minute. Typing whatever came to his mind. In coincidence, is the topic he had thought of tonight. Suicide.
He wrote of the fate of a girl who was beaten, raped, with no one by her side. No one to hold her or to tell her everything was alright. He wondered what the reason he thought of the subject tonight. No legitimate reason. Not one. The time was getting quite late. It was getting quite late, and he is immensely tired. So much so, in fact, he is starting to feel at least a little sorry for his character.
He sat back and hit the power button. With huffs and sighs, and occasional yawn, he trotted to his room silently. His music was, also, blaring loudly into his ears. To block out the world. With all its twists and turns, you were sure to get dizzy. That was until you were to crash and burn. Then life felt like it was over for you. Cain never felt this way. He'd always been happy, talented, handsome, and incredibly bright. He took it to his advantage that he was so good at playing the game life put itself out to be. But, he also wondered why he was so gifted, and how he’d learn to play this game so well. Then the thoughts faded, and the thought that remained was the lyrics of the music that played loudly in his ears. He listened closely, listening to the lyrics wondering what they were meant to be interpreted to.
As he wrapped up getting ready for bed, he lied down, stopped the music, set the headphones and Ipod down, and stared at the ceiling. His thoughts faded and the world of his dreams and nightmares took over.
The crunch of leaves beneath her feet, the whooshing sound that filled her ears. She ran. Running from the fear of death, she trips, falling to the ground. Bleeding, she tries to sit up but can’t, her mind is thinking, Get up, get up, get up. But she fails to move. Her body no longer responds.
She sits up screaming in her bed. Then realizes she’s awake, glancing around her. Blood. And lots of it, all over the sheets, dried up on her arm, and all over her clothes. She sighs and tries to scream, but her scream is cut short. She faints. Blackness takes over her mind; her thoughts are babbled as she fades from existence.
He wakes up, not refreshed, but worried, scared, and unbelievably tired. Especially at midnight. His weird instincts take over, vibes fill him. He, absently, reaches for the remote that lies on his nightstand. He switches on the TV. The channel is flipped to the news, and he listens. His normal self comes back to life and he cries.
Chloe Whitaker, 15, was found dead in her room less than 2 hours ago. Self inflicted wounds reveal it was a brutal suicide. The news lady continues with the story then shows crime scene investigator ready to reveal a statement from the police department. We are working our hardest to find the cause of this young teenage girl’s suicide. A note was left, by Chloe, written directly to a young man named Cain. A tear falls from the corner of the investigators eye and he pulls out a piece of paper, he inhales and begins to read, To Cain, You’ve dreamt and written about me. You knew this was going to happen, so I ask one favor. Tell the media my reason for tonight. Please. I know you’re out there because I’ve dreamt of you as well. Tell them. Even if they think you’re crazy. Tell them. The CSI stops and looks at the camera. Sighs and says, Cain. If you’re out there, please tell us. Make a statement. The screen gets hectic and the care-taker of Chloe flies in front of the camera, and yells, please Cain?! Please. I just want to come to peace with the fact she’s gone. And I can only do that when I know why. Plea-,
The screen changes to the studio and the anchor lady shares her sorrow for this story then moves on to the next.
Cain sat in silence for what felt like forever. Finally, he lets out a breath and cries. Digging his face into his hands, he cries. For hours, he cries, as long as it took him to fall asleep.
The next morning was groggy for Cain. The corner of his eyes filled with sand from the heavy, disturbed, sleep, for which he had just awaken from. He sits up half asleep, and presses a single key on his laptop. The machine turned on and switched it straight to music.
Cain on the other hand gets up and grabs the remote and turns on the news.
Drawn pictures of the young man named in the note left by Chloe Whitaker, have been identified. The young man’s name is Cain Clyde. We have found his location and are heading there now. Any further findings will be updated, stay tuned.
The screen changes and Cain sits in silence and his eyes widen. He shoots up and goes to his closet, starts ripping out his favorite clothes and throws them all on the bed and starts going through them. 4 shirts, 3 pairs of pants, some boxers, and some socks, were all he had available to take. He shrugs and throws them in a bag. His thoughts are scattered, but one thought stayed tranquil. He had to leave, there was no other way. In spite of everything he had in his next-to-perfect life. He wasn’t sure where he was going; all he knew was that he had to renounce his house, his life, his everything.
An idea emerged into mind, he grabbed his cell from the bedside table and he pressed some buttons and put the phone to his ear. A few rings, then a pick-up. “Ello?” Her voice was a relief in his very soul, “Hey, it’s Cain. I need to ask a favor”
“Cain?! Babe, are you okay? You’re all over the news and y-,”
“Bethany. Shut up and listen,” He whispered through his teeth.
“What do you need?” She said dully.
“A place to stay, food, and money. Please, Bethany. You’re the only one I can run to. And when I get there I will explain everything, I promise.”
She didn’t say anything for a moment not even a breath, “Okay babe. I will give you a get-away ride be ready in twenty. And Cain?”
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry all this is happening.”
“I’m fine Beth. I just need to clear things up.”
They said their goodbyes and Cain hurried to grab his vital things. He showered for five minutes, ran a brush through his black hair, and rinsed his mouth with some Listerine. He was ready with five minutes to spare, so he went down the stairs quickly but quietly. Well aware his parents would be worried when he left, he grabbed a paper and chicken scratched a quick note while munching on a bag of chips. He left the note that said, Mom. Dad. I gotta go for a bit. Please don’t worry I’ll call you later. Don’t call the cops, please. I will explain everything tonight. I love you guys. Forgive me.
He sighed and threw the pen down on the table and slipped out the front door silently. He walked across the grass to meet the silver car that sat on the end of the sidewalk. He threw the door open and climbed in the corvette. He looked over at Beth and smiled wearily, “Thank you. I can’t thank you enough for what you’re doing for me, Beth,” He said quietly, a tear fell from the corner of his eye. She sat in content curiosity, smiling warmly. He had never noticed the kindness that had overcome her pretty little face.
He had always liked Beth in any way possible. Every time he saw her he noticed something new in the features of her face. And not because they were new, just something he hadn’t recognized before. Her brunette hair fell loosely around her shoulders curling around her face and the rest of it had a perfect wave. Her face was heart-shaped and the color of ivory. Almond eyes, a thick milk chocolate color. Freckles lightly sprinkled over the nose and cheeks.
He shook himself from his thoughts as she began to speak, “You know,” she sighed putting one hand on his face, “I would do anything for you. Anything in this world,” she smiled brightly. He stopped for a moment, he thought of what he could respond with without being bluntly obvious with his love for her.
She looked at the steering wheel sighed and started the car. When she lifted her head Cain had notice the twinkle on her cheek that was a tear.
They started driving. They remained silent for most of the way. But during that silence he saw her hand on the emergency brake clutch and he smiled. Her hand, soft as silk, curled perfectly around the clutch. His hand moved and placed itself on hers. She lifted it and held his hand hard, “Are you okay, Cain?” She smiled faintly. He sighed, looked down then back up, “Yea, I think,” He smiled to reassure her. His smile obviously wasn’t convincing, “We need to change your look babe,” she giggled in amusement. Now, he was scared. He liked his looks. What did she have in mind for him? He hoped deeply that she had good style.
He thought again realizing he didn’t need to worry about how good he looked. This was a crisis and he was worried about his appearance.
From the corner of his eye he saw her glance at him; he lifted his head in curiosity. He raised an eyebrow, “What?” He asked confused. She smiled slightly, “Oh, Nothing. I just realized how damn hot you are when you’re stressed,” she giggled. Beth always thought he was the center of her universe. Her everything. She was in downright love with this kid. There was no denying it. And she knew that.
He blushed slightly, looking down. Beth stopped the car, pulling into her driveway. She stopped for a moment undoing her seatbelt. As did Cain. They silently walked into the house. Cain had walked in first, Beth right behind him… She sighed and he turned around quickly grabbing her face in his hands.
He smiled slightly pressing his lips to hers. At first she was surprised, and then took into the kiss. The kiss got deeper and deeper. With more love and passion. He pulls away slowly, biting his lip. He lets go of her and looks down.
She stops to think for a second. Then pushes him against the wall kissing him hard, their bodies grind together, kisses getting even more passionate and luring.
After a few hours things were back to normal. Cain was in the shower, Beth in the kitchen cooking some breakfast.
“Whatcha cookin‘?” Cain smiles sexily at his Beth. She jumped a little then smiled sweetly, “Food,” She smirked. Cain smiled and walked over behind her brushing the hair away from one side of her neck. He leans down slowly to kiss her neck. Kissing gently, he whispers, “I Love you,” She smiled happily and turned around, kissed him and said, “I love you too,”
For how he longed to hear those three words, I love you. They repeated in his mind over and over. His eyes bored into her’s. She stared thoughtfully back.
They ate in silence, lost in the thoughts of each other.
Then it hit him. Cain had to focus on the situation at hand, “Now we gotta figure out a plan, Beth.” He said with a mouthful of food.
She giggled and thought to herself for a quick moment. Then she stood and walked to the kitchen to put her dishes away.
Cain sat thoughtfully waiting for Beth to return. His thoughts drifted to about 45 minutes ago, when they were wrapped up in each other’s embrace. A warm feeling overcame him, at first he couldn’t be sure what this feeling was. Then after a few more moments of thought he realized it was his passionate love for the only human being who could truly understand him. He pondered why this was, yet the only answer he could seem to come up with was the fact of destiny.
Beth arrived from the hallway leading to the kitchen, “Grab your stuff we’re going’ to Walgreen’s,” She smiled. Cain was curious, but refrained from asking or even speaking. He just did as he was told and they walked out to the car.
Before he had thought of even doing so, he walked to the driver’s side of the vehicle and opened the driver’s door, “For you, my lady,” he smiled fondly. She giggled and got into the car. He then shut the door and climbed in, himself. Beth started the car, then before pulling out of the driveway glanced at Cain and muttered, “Thank you,” he smiled and nodded. Beth pulled out of the driveway and started down the road.
They arrived at Walgreen’s a few minutes later; “I don’t want to go in there,” Cain managed to say.
“You need to, otherwise I’ll pick a new look for you on my own,”
Cain looked down for a moment, and then finally said, “I can’t go in there, Beth. My face and name have been all over the news. Too big of a risk,”
“Fine, but don’t be mad on how I choose you to look,”
He sighed in loss, but had hoped deeply she wouldn’t go crazy with her new found freedom. He almost second thought his decision, and then thought again.
He waited impatiently, and then Beth walked through the sliding glass doors. Bag in hand, she grins at him childishly. Oh great, he thought to himself. She approached the car with what seemed like caution. She stepped into the car, started it, and headed back to the house. On the ride back she stated, “While I’m giving you a make-over, you get to explain all this to me,” He smiled and nodded.
They got back to the house quickly, they shuffled inside and Cain picked up his phone and his smile dropped, “Eight missed calls, four voicemails, ten texts, and two picture messages,” he read aloud.
He could swear he saw Beth’s jaw drop from the corner of his eye.
He dialed and put the phone to his ear, “You have four new messages, to listen to your messages press one,” he did as was said and listened again, “Cain?! Answer the phone, sweetie! We haven’t called the police. We just want to know what’s going on…” Click. The next three messages were of the same sort.
He finally rolled his eyes and threw the phone on the bed, “Let’s do this,” he smiled at Beth winking. He followed her into the bathroom, where she had everything lied out and ready to use. She grabbed my shoulders shoving my downward to sit down. I sat as directed, “You don’t get to look till I’m done,” she giggled.
She began the process by putting bleach in his hair. She smiled and while the bleach did its work she plucked his eyebrows, fixed up his face a little then rinsed out the bleach. She smiled at him with wet hair, “I think I’m going to cut it,” she smiled.
“No! Don’t cut it,” he practically shrieked.
She giggled, “Just a little trim, love.”
He huffed in defeat and sat back down, and she continued.
About half an hour later, “I’m all done,” she smiled in pride. He got up nervously to look in the mirror.
She laughed, “Mirror, Mirror, on the wall. Who’s the hottest of them all?” Cain couldn’t stop smiling; he turned around and swept her off her feet in an unbreakable embrace. She sighed and hugged back then steeped back to look at him. She smiled and sighed. He was tall and handsome. His now, gorgeous, bleach blonde hair swept to the left, his face was sculpted like no other’s. She couldn’t help but look. She smiled big, “I think we need a few more things, I’m running back to the store. You stay here,” She smiled. Before he had the chance to speak she had already left the room.
He turned around to face himself in the mirror. At first, he was a little shocked. I mean, he was irresistibly attractive. His hair always swept perfectly. Then a thought hit him and his eyes shot to his lips, “I should pierce them!” He accidentally said aloud.
Beth walked in the front door, “I’m back!” She hollered. Cain smiled and walked out to greet her, “I should pierce them,” he said pointing to his perfected lips, “Um, Yea! That would be good, very dramatic change. Funny you thought of that cause I went and got a lip piercing kit and a few rings,” she smiled in victory.
They ran back into the bathroom.
A few hours past when they were officially done. Cain’s hair was now bleach blonde with a blotch of black stretched over the top. His lips had a pair of snake bites, which he had to admit looked amazing. Beth giggled and spun him around to kiss him, as she pulled away he cringed a little, “What?” She asked curiously,
“Still a little sore from the piercing,” he laughed.
They fiddled around a little, picking up stuff in the bathroom; Cain stared at himself for twenty minutes, just staring.
His phone began to ring, he jumped. He reached for the phone. He read the screen, a number he didn’t recognize? That was seldom, “Hello?” He said puzzled.
“Well, hello Cain,” The voice sounded female.
“Who’s this?”
“I’m sure you could guess. You knew I would die, and I asked kindly that you told the press why. You run from my kind favor. I-,”
“Who they hell are you?! Is this some sick joke?!” He hollered completely horrified.
The phone went silent for a few moments, “Hello?” He asked. No response just silence. He pulled the phone from his ear and saw that they had hung up. His eyes widened as he set down the phone. Beth took a glance. She had gotten the message, “We’ve put off the fact you haven’t told me what’s going on, but now it’s crucial. I need to know, now!”
Cain sighed. He wasn’t actually sure how to begin. He began by saying he was a writer, and how he had found out that every story he writes is reality at the moment he writes it. Then he told her how he had come to write of, Chloe, the girl who had committed suicide just a day or so ago. Then he told her the dreams and nightmares or her as well. Lastly, he told her about the unpleasant phone call he had just received.
He had to admit, at first he was in complete awareness that she didn’t believe a word I had said, “You have to believe me, Beth. I couldn’t have killed her or made her do it; I mean for god’s sake I am more than twenty-three hundred miles away. And had no idea my stories were reality until this whole incident. Now, because the girl left that note, I am in hiding. I’m scared and worried. I don’t know what the police will say or do when they find me. What if they blame me, and charge me with something. Then I’ll go to jail,” he paused to swallow, “I don’t know what to do, I’m at a loss,” his eyes started to tear up. He was breaking down.
She sighed and took a minute to think and take it all in, how deeply Cain hoped she would believe his story. She took in one breath and fainted. Quick to his feet, Cain caught her before she hit the cold floor.
It felt like hours had past before Beth awoke, perhaps it was. By now, Cain had set her on the bed. During the time of her unconsciousness he made a phone call to his mother. A few rings, “Hello?” He voice was a sweet escape from all this mess.
“Mom,” he sighed, “I am safe and sound. I can’t tell you where I am but I can call and let you know I am fine,”
“Cain! Oh, honey. Sweetheart, what’s going on?”
Cain regrettably explained it to his mother. He wasn’t sure what she’d say so he finished his story and fell silent. A minute or so had past, when finally, “Okay, darling. Do what you need to do and make sure to call me all the time when you’re okay and even if your not.” She took a deep breath.
“God, thank you, Mom. I can always trust you. Take care of yourself, Ma.” He had to force a smile.
Even when not in visual contact she could feel his smile, “I love you son, be safe.” And she hung up the phone.
Eventually Beth woke up, she said she had had some dream, and said it was about Chloe. At first, he straight-up thought she was bluffing to be a help, but she had now known things he hadn’t told her. Or anyone.
There was a huge catch to all this mess. And this catch, was about to get a whole lot bigger.
