Laura Farina’s Diary

September 10th
Today is my first day at Mercersburg. I’m so nervous. I can’t help but wonder if people will like me, after all, I am the new senior. I miss my baby at home. I feel like an awful mother for leaving him. This morning I was unpacking in my dorm room, and my mother called me. She said that Nicholas, my son, said he missed me. I had Nicholas in the middle of my sophomore year. His full name is Nicholas Blake. I think coming here will give me an opportunity to be a real teenager, not just a parent. I have any intentions of telling people about Nicholas. I need to keep the most important person in my life a secret.

Last time I wrote it was the first day at school. I’ve made a lot of progress since then. I’m gaining friends by the hour. Every time I turn around I’m being introduced to someone else. My roommate got here a little while after me on September 10th. Her name is Allison. I’m not sure if I like her. She is very reserved, goes to bed early. It doesn’t seem like she has much going on her life. I’m not really sure what’s up with her. I miss Nicholas even more now. It’s hard to be here without him.

It’s becoming difficult to hide the truth about Nicholas. My roommate walked in the room while I was on the phone saying “Nicholas Blakey” in a baby voice. She gave me a strange look. I pointed to the phone and mouthed the words “my brother”. She didn’t ask any questions thankfully. I was worried she would. I did a good job at covering it up. I’m getting paranoid about her finding out. I can’t let her. She would tell everyone, and my life would be ruined. I’m trying to stay calm, but I’m always worried about my baby, and my friends finding out.

My roommate is getting really frustrating. She keeps taking my things without asking me.
October 1st
I know I haven’t written in a while, but I’ve been doing great! My parents brought Nicholas to “Family Weekend”! No worries, I told people he was my brother. I got really freaked out when he started calling me “Mommy” in front of my friends. I told him I wasn’t Mommy. I pray to God that they believe me. It seemed like they thought it was weird, but they believed it. It was so great to see him though. I’ve never been so happy to see someone in my life. He got so big. I was shocked. After the Mommy incident, I took him to my room. There he could safely call me whatever he wanted to.
(Switch to first person from the roommate for finding the diary? Go to writing center for help on this transition.)
I opened Laura’s dresser drawer to borrow a shirt. I knew it bothered her, but I honestly didn’t care. She would get over it. I saw something green peeking out from under a white shirt. I looked to see if maybe she got a new shirt. I kind of wanted to wear green today. I touched it. It obviously wasn’t a shirt. It was hard. I pulled it out of the drawer. It was a book. I opened up to the first page. I couldn’t help that I was curious, and once I realized what it was I just couldn’t help myself.
It was Laura’s diary. Inside I discovered shocking secrets. Laura had a baby. I read, and read. She explained how she was keeping it a secret from everyone in the diary. No wonder the Nicholas was calling her “Mommy”. She is his mommy!
I wasn’t sure what to do. I put the diary back in the dresser with haste. I didn’t know whether to confront Laura or not. I walked down the hall when my best friend, Sarah, stopped me. She said she had to tell me a story, so she pulled me into her room.
I barely listened to the story. I was in a haze from the other news I just learned about. Suddenly I couldn’t help it. “Laura has a baby! Nicholas is her son!”
I realized I probably just told the worst person possible. She can keep my secrets, and her secrets, but anytime she hears something juicy about someone else she can’t keep her mouth shut.
“Shit.” I muttered under my breath.
“What?” she practically screamed “No way!”
She rushed over to her computer. I didn’t know what she was doing. Before I knew it she was reading her Facebook status aloud. “OH MY GOD. LAURA FARINA’S “LITTLE BROTHER” IS ACTUALLY HER SON! NO WONDER HE CALLED HER MOMMY!”
What did I just do? I thought.
The next day all I got was questions. Everyone wanted to know about Laura and her baby. Then I saw her sitting alone on the stairs behind Rutledge, where no one could see her crying. She was sobbing. I couldn’t bear to look any longer. I quickly walked away. I felt nothing but guilt. I went to our room.
(Somehow switch back to diaries)
October 3rd
I don’t have any idea how anyone found out. I can’t stand this. All they do is talk about it. My friends haven’t talked to me since they found out. Even Alison has been stand offish. I thought of all people she would be here for me. I guess no one is now. I called my mom and told her what happened. I’m so depressed. I went from being so happy to being so so so sad.
October 8th
It’s getting worse. I’m always alone. People make comments a lot. They call me a “hoe”. I can’t stand it here anymore. I want to leave. ASAP.

October 13th
I sat in a meeting in the dean’s office for hours on end with my parents discussing the situation. Finally I got to go back to my room. I began packing my bags with all of my stuff. Once I was all packed I decided to get out my diary and write one last entry at Mercersburg. As I sit here I look at my half of the room. It’s completely empty. I look at Alison filled with so much life, and happiness. I’m taking one last look before I walk out the door, and close it forever.
October 17th
It’s killing me to be at home by myself. Nicholas is a constant reminder of what I went through at Mercersburg. Don’t get me wrong, I love being back home with my son, but I was having so much fun there before the Sarah incident. She told everyone, and now, here I am, sitting on my couch watching TV alone.
October 20th
Today I received a surprising phone call. I didn’t know the number, so I just answered it. To my dismay it was Allison. She said she felt guilty about what she had done. She told me that she was the one who found the diary and told Sarah. She apologized over and over. I didn’t know what to say at first. I suddenly realized that not forgiving her wouldn’t do anything for me. So, I decided to forgive her. She was shocked by what she read; it’s hard to keep that kind of thing bottled up. I understood where she was coming from. I still have no intention of ever going back to Mercersburg, but I’m glad that she’s here for me now.
go everywhere. do everything.
regret nothing.

Well I did like that the story was easy to read and interesting enough for me to actual read it. I have a very select taste when I read things on this site and your writing style is what I like to read.

I had a hard time believing this was real. I understand that people are jerks out there and that's what they do when a teenager gets pregnant, but that doesn't mean everyone shuns that person completely. I'm a senior in high school myself and I know people that are pregnant or even have a baby. Trust me, they're not shunned that bad. It's true that some do look down on them, but this story is just overdramatizing this a bit.

The whole perspective thing was kind of strange. Might I suggest having two seperate diaries for the two girls and maybe talk about how she found the diary, her telling the other girl what she knew, and her calling the other girl on the phone. Then you could get to know both characters at the same time and compare the two.

I had a hard time getting to know the characters. Now I understand that this was meant to be a diary writing and that's kind of hard when you're doing first person perspective with just what their writing, but I think this could have been done a little better. A diary is something that a girl tells all her feelings to. Unless you meant for her to be kind of afraid to talk to her diary, then that's understandable.

Overall I enjoyed the story and I hope you keep writing!

Hi.

I really liked this story and it was a breeze to read. No clumsy errors and grammar

But i think, when you change perspective and tell us that you are doing it. It really destroys the connection and flow ever so slightly

But other than that, it really was very nice and enjoyable to read over.

Hope you keep writing!
