Prologue
For thousands of years cultures, ancient and not, have been writing legends about mythical creatures; some legends were more believable than others. There was a time in each cultures existence that these legends where believed, that you could tell someone the story and they would claim it to be the truth. Yet, as time continued and the cultures died out, these legends where deemed unbelievable or lost in time. With the science and technology the world now possess you could tell anyone one of the legends and they would claim it to be just that, a legend, a myth, an untrue story told for entertainment. The ancient legends told by ancient cultures where true, believe it or not. The ancient people were the smart ones to embrace the stories and fear the creatures they were written about. Now people deny the stories, they no longer fear the creatures that should be feared.
There was one legend written about certain mythical creatures that just so happened to continuously reappear in almost every ancient culture to exist. Yet, it seems that no one of the world today will believe this story, no matter how many cultures have in the past. The creature has many names, but it does not have one it prefers. In the course of the past 2000 years, only 20 have existed. These creatures live forever, but are not immortal, can change their appearance at will, and look just like humans. They are known to travel in groups; only two groups have existed in all of history, one containing 11 members and the other 9. Neither has control over the other, in fact the two groups can’t stand to hear of the other.
My story involves the group of 9, and proves just how oblivious humans are to what really happens in this magnificent world.
Chapter 1
Stumbling into the living room, grasping onto the back of the nearest chair, I tried to forget the bloody scene that was my brother’s bodies. Finding Carsten and Vlad like that traumatized us all. They lay on the ground, in a position that suggested they were hugging each other before the end, drained of all blood, cuts and bruises coating whatever flesh remained on their acid eroded bodies. I stood still for a moment to horrified to even think straight let alone cry.
I heard the front door slam and knew the rest have finally joined me in the house. The first to enter the room was Damien and Damon, both calmly taking seats on the couch in front of me; Damon comforting his older twin as tears gently cascaded down Damien’s tan cheeks, his short wavy dark honey blonde hair shielding his warm chocolate brown eyes. Neither bothered to acknowledge my presence. Tom stormed into the room, his dark hazel eyes filled with a hate and anger words could not describe, his black cornrows pulled neatly into a pony tail down his back. Bill followed quickly after, a look identical to his older twins placed on his face except for the fact that he had tears brimming in his eyes. Tom approached me and I knew I was in for it, but didn’t move. Tom is known for jumping to conclusions.
“How the hell could you?!? How could you do this!?!” Tom hollered as he lunged at me, tears finally streaking down his now seemingly inhuman face.
“I didn’t do this.” I said through clenched teeth, dodging his attack, tears of anger now streaming down my cheeks. “Carsten and Vlad meant more to me than anything. I would NEVER lay a hand on them, let alone do THAT to them.”
It was then Izzy and Symba decided to join us in the room, the two bleached blondes huddling in the corner trying to avoid the fight. I saw Izzy’s dark green eyes stare at me from across the room.
“You’re lying!” Tom yelled at me, not believing me, but believing whatever it was that brought him comfort, in this case knowing who killed Carsten and Vlad.”You killed them, I KNOW you did, so don’t you dare lie to me.” It was then Tom chose to slap me hard across the face, the sound of skin connecting with skin echoing throughout the house. I stood there in disbelief, not even raising a hand to my now stinging cheek.
Not a second after that I saw the familiar whirl of honey blonde hair tackle Tom to the ground, Damon’s petite body pinning my brother to the carpeted floor.
“Yelling at her is one thing Tom, but hitting her, your little sister, that’s completely different. I mean for God’s sake Tom she didn’t even touch them, let alone brutally murder them!” Damon said trying to reason with the angry mess that was my brother. I stood there in shock trying to comprehend all that has managed to happen in the last hour.
I looked back in the corner, expecting to see Symba still comforting Izzy, but instead finding Symba all but smashing Bill onto the floor as the black haired twin tried to fight his way to his brother. A still crying Izzy quickly approached me enveloping me into a hug, the only one to offer me comfort in this devastating time.
“But, Damon, she did, she killed Carsten and Vlad. Why are you defending her like this?’Bill questioned Damon with tears running down his face too, fighting Symba.
“Because I believe she didn’t and wouldn’t ever do such a thing.” It was at that time that Tom practically threw Damon’s petite body off of himself so Damien rushed to the rescue, seating himself square on the middle to Tom’s well built chest.
“But I didn’t do it…… I’d…I’d never, NEVER do that to either Carsten or Vlad.” I started mumbling to myself, sobs consuming my already nonexistent thought process.
Trying to comfort me Izzy said, “Of course you didn’t, Kaari. I know you didn’t, you would never do that to your brothers.”
“She did though, I just, I just know it. It has to be her.” Tom tried saying, but had a hard time speaking with Damien sitting on him. Bills anger left him and he too finally started sobbing, therefore Symba dropped the crying mess, which landed on the ground. I pulled away from Izzy and tried crawling to my precious brother to wipe the ugly tears off his pretty face, but he just crawled away, over to Tom. Bill helped Tom pull the other set of younger twins off of him and hugged him.
“Why Tom, why would Kaari kill them?” Bill whispered still trying to make sense of the mess that was now our lives.
“Honestly Bill, I don’t know.” Tom said back to his younger brother. Sitting beside each other is how we left them, us walking to our rooms, them sitting on the living room floor, all of us trying to cope with the fact that we sadly lost two members of our group.
As I stumbled my way past Carsten and Vlads old room I sobbed harder and tried to avoid falling to my knees in the process. When I finally made it to my room I collapsed on my full sized bed, to confused and whipped out to do anything. Damien and Damon came and sat next to me, one rubbing my back, the other my knee, and me sadly not having the energy to look up and determine which is which.
“Ya gonna be ok?” Damon’s voice asked me. I shrugged my shoulders truly unsure of how I was going to handle the situation I was now unfortunately placed in.
“Tom had no right to act the way he did, not matter what happened.” Damien said, trying to bring comfort, reassuring me Tom was in the wrong not me.
“I guess.” I mumbled, not really in the mood for conversation, really just wanting to sleep. The twins got the unspoken hint and left the room, leaving me there by myself to cry, knowing that I have probably lost all four of my brothers, two to death, two to hatred.
