Freezing Downtown!

So, I got a new digital camera for by birthday (Cannon Digital Elph) I named him Georgio, despite the fact he's hot pink. So, tonight, my dad, his camera, me and Georgio went downtown in the freezing, so I could shoot some pictures.
These are my best two.

Remeber-this is my frist time take these types of photos. This is me trying to be 'artsy'

Ok, I love both of these, but I have to say the second one is my favorate. It has this kind of... I don't know, it just looks like something you would see on TV or in a magazine. It looks so cool!

One of the most important jobs of an artist is to make the work look easy and effortless, as if the perfect scene just re-arranged itself. The trouble with these is that they don't seem to have that. It seems more like you purposely went out to find something to photgraph and chose these. Yes, that's what all artists do, but it's not supposed to look like that. The literary equivelant is when you can tell a rhyme scheme or idea is forced.

Take the second one for example. It looks like a scene I would cross on the way down the road, just as I would look at it. Try going to the same location and photographing it from different angles. Crouch down lower and aim across the floor, or lie down and aim mostly upwards. How about a view from inside the tunnel looking out. Photography is primarily visual, so the perspective from where you're standing is everying.

Experiment a lot. Think of how many different things you can change about the scene, and change it.

You know, both of these are really cool, but I think I like the first one better, it's just so unique and unnatural. Also, the second one is really blurry, I like where it's at and the angle, but it's just really blurry.

Alrighty, I'll take into consideration you've got a new camera and you're new to photography a little bit.

The first photo is... well it's confusing. I still don't really know what the focal point is. An old bike? A sculpture? I just don't know. I don't like the angle. It's boring, plain, and just a standard tourist photo. Try to be more creative. Saying these are your first attempts are fine, but it's no excuse for just literally, pointing and shooting. Try and be creative. Evoke an amazing focal point. Create mystery and drama with your photos! Get down low, get up high, face up! Try as many angles as you can, and when you get the right one, the photo will fall into place so easily.
The tones in this photo are a little bland too. Everything's grey. Maybe making this black and white may help as you'll be able to use the tones in a way which help you. Some nice editing may help this photo too. Cropping closer to the object maybe, some contrast and saturation increases, maybe a tiny increase in blacks. And if the photo suits it (I'm not sure without editing it, but you'll know yourself), maybe add vignetting?
On the plus side, you're picking out interesting objects, so good job on that. And the positioning of the object is great too. I like it off centred a lot!

The second photo has so much promise. Those lights on the arches are fantastic. So, if you can go there again, forget about the stuff on the left hand side of the photo and focus on those lights. If you focus on the first row, you'll get some lovely bokeh.
As regards this picture though:
- It's out of focus. No amount of editing can change this.
- The angle is pointing away from what i see as the focal point (I've explained this above)
- The tones are really grey and dull - this can be solved when you focus on those rows of lights

Again, try to edit your pictures too. Increasing saturation, contrast, blacks etc really do make a huge difference.

Overall:
You're showing promise - nice interesting objects in your photos, but you sometimes lack creativity (which'll naturally come soon), and some general lack of knowledge about taking pictures (but your camera's new, so an out of focus picture isn't a big deal).
I'd whip out the camera manual, and spend a few days just practising with shots around your house or neighbourhood. Just to get a feel for your camera, before going out just for photography snaps. Maybe looking online for tips and advice, or just asking here will help too.

First photo: This photo is a little blend, but I guess everyone said that to you already. And they gave you ways to spice it up. I've just got to say one thing: don't be afraid. The worst that can happen, is that you don't like the photo, and that's not a big deal, right? I think it's pretty good for a beginner, (believe me, I'm still like that;)) And you've got the base, that's for sure. Now all you've got to find is the sparkle to each one of your photos.

Second photo: It's much better! I like it, and I have only one suggestion. you should crop it so we can see less of the city that's beside the tunnel. It's a little bit distracting for me, and I think it would make the tunnel more obvious. The center of the attention.

You're doing a great job, and I'm looking forward to see more of your pictures!
