This is a piece I wrote near the beginning of the year. When I write my poetry, most of it has a couple things in common:
1. A stanza that is a refrain, because I write like it's a song. The refrain would be like the chorus of a song.
2. A Christian theme. I am absolutely devoted as a Christian, and much of my writing is more like worship.
Although this piece isn't as blatant as some of my others are (will be), if you look at it through the lens of Christianity, you will see the true meaning I was aiming for.

A Beautiful Illusion
Written on 2/27/10

You ask how long I’ll let my eyes deceive me from the truth,
Of all that’s real, that’s staring in my face.
I don’t care about anything
You have to say to me.
Just let me live in my own way.
Go on, just let me be.

It’s a beautiful illusion
And I won’t let it go.
I’ll keep my own reality.
There’s nothing you can do.
A beautiful illusion,
That’s keeping me content,
That tricks my heart and head,
And disallows me to repent.

There’s nothing that can give me joy; my feelings all but gone;
Eroded, dull, and withering away.
This dream is all that I have left,
If but a futile muse.
And if it’s just a fantasy,
It’s fantasy I choose.

So I will live my life this way with inhibitions void;
With nothing to repress my every want.
And nothing you can say or do
Will change my grounded mind.
This truth you say you’ve found is
Something that I’ll never find.

It’s a beautiful illusion
And I won’t let it go.
I’ll keep my own reality.
There’s nothing you can do.
A beautiful illusion,
That’s keeping me content,
That tricks my heart and head,
And disallows me to repent.

Comments and critiques are welcome.

Wow. This is really impressive (but this is coming from an amateur, so don't take it too much to heart). I really like this piece because it gives the mind something to think over. Even if it's meant for Christianity, it could apply to something else in someones life, and be very meaningful to them. To me, it seems that it could very easily be a song.
You obviously put some thought into this ^_^ Nice!

I find this beautiful, especially as it is related to religion. I love your idea of the refrain and find it very meaningful especially as it is repeated. I am curious to read your other works, so please keep writing!

I really enjoyed the poem I like how it reflects how a lot of people try to cling on to they're idealistic ideas and begin believing in them so much that its almost heartbreaking to them when they realise its not going to happen and, how although its optimistic its as if they're living in a dream world and fooling themselves. I thought it was really well written and I liked the title 'A Beautiful Illusion' and the use of it throughout the poem because its such a good way to describe this 'idealism' but also show that they're deluding themselves for their own happiness or to try and hang on to any happiness. I think if you carry on to write and put as much thought as you have into this poem as others that you'll continue to write really well and successfully :)
