This is just out of curiosity, since I think television is getting dumber and more cliche each day...

See, I like scripts. So I want some ideas! New ideas, fresh ideas, stuff that's cool and NOT cliche. I mean, my kid sister watches all these shows and...

It's all the same, with different characters. There's nothing new. It's, like, "Your friends wanted you to do something--you did it. Now you're in trouble. What are you going to do?".

Have they ever heard of the word "no"? And everything else is trashy or vulgar. There's no middle ground. There isn't even a ground. Half the stuff I see on TV I know is wrong. Like that one show, with the pregnant fourteen-year-old...

Who is THAT idiotic?

Not so much in terms of race, but it does annoy me when there are token gay characters that are only there to spark controversy. I don't think it's something that needs to have undue attention brought to it - isn't society mature enough to deal with the fact that, yes, some people are gay?

One of my favourites of all time. (And I've read "The Hobbit", but it didn't really do anything for me. Too much random singing.)

I don't think all television is going to the dogs, though. I've never heard of the show with the pregnant fourteen-year-old, for example.
I think if you ask around then you will find some examples of really good TV. It's just a shame that we have to filter through so much rubbish to find it. *sigh*

I had hoped I wasn't the only one to notice that. They only do male and female best friends so that a love triangle can be formed. And with the female-female best friends one usually ends up as the girlfriend, and the other one remains a close friend or a jealous former friend. Which is sort of like the plot of the first.

I know! Call me anti-PC, but those people are tokens. They're only put there to pacify the politically correct.

I've read the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Animal Farm. And I think the largest book I've read yet was Les Miserables.It was a great book, but I don't think I'm going through that again for a while.

Masterchef the professionals. It's full of food porn plus Michel Roux Jr, whom I have a totally inappropriate crush on. I also quite like Lewis, Dollhouse, Futurama, Neughbours, The Apprentice (UK), How I met your mother, House, The big bang theory, these are all the boxsets that are on my shelf and stuff I watch online.. And pretty much all food shows.

Masterchef already fills all necessary criterion. Really though, it needs to be something that's worth discussing afterwards or something that will really stick in your mind for good reasons. Funny and witty but without being too jokey, and characters that I can actually like and root for.

Yes.

Books or Television?
I'll watch DVDs during the day, and then read at night when I'm in bed. I'm usually multi-tasking when I'm watching something though, I just like having something on in the background a lot of the time.

Action or Romance?
A hearty mix of both, if it's just focused on either it can get too polar and just bland.

Saying all TV sucks is a huge generalization, like saying all food sucks, not that you need Tv to live, but there are some great shows out there. What you;re saying seems to fit in with Disney or kid shows.

"Twilight" or "Peeps"? What on earth are Peeps?

Is it weird to you that people on TV always have two best friends and they seem to always be male and female, or female and female? Most shows I watch actually lean towards a mostly male cast, so there tends to be more of a guys-only atmosphere.

Is it weird that there are token Chinese/black/etc. people popping up randomly but they never seem to be the main character, and if so, they always whine about how they're treated differently? It's not particularly weird, no. Yay for PC. And again, most of my shows seem to deal with it semi-reasonably.

Is it weird to you that on TV girls always cry/act kick-behind (yet are unusually intelligent), dudes are always emotionless d-bags and idiotic (normally musicians), old people are grouchy, and one parent is dead? Stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason, so no, I don't find it weird. Annoying, yes, but not weird.

If you could make a TV character, what would he/she(/it) be like? Anti-Hero archetype, probably. Either a Magnificent Bastard or a guy afflicted with a terminal case of Honor Before Reason.

Have you ever read "Dune", anything by Tolkien, "1984"/"Animal Farm", or anything by Asimov--something that exceeds 300 pages (please say yes)? Read all of the original Dune books (from Dune to Chapterhouse: Dune, but not the sequels/prequels written by Herbert's son), LotR/Hobbit/Silmarillion/Unfinished Tales 1st, 2nd, 3rd Age, both 1984 and Animal Farm, and lots and lots of 300+ pages (om nom Les Misérables).

Favorite Show?
There's a long, long list. It includes Scrubs, NCIS, Doctor Who and Downton Abbey.

Not at all. I have about twelve best friends, and my groups always contain guys and girls.

It's weird that the dead parent always goes out in a riding accident. And those girls are usually Mary Sues.

Oh, wow. Suddenly...people. I have noticed a few things as I have read through your responses...which I haven't finished quite yet.

A. I'm idiotic for thinking people here don't read. D'oh. *laughs*
B. No one but me seems to like Scott Westerfield, i.e. they don't know that "Peeps" is a book on parasite-positives and gritty New York vampires. It also, in my opinion, pwns Twilight.
C. I seem to be "generalizing". Let it be known I'm just asking general questions. Plus, I have the bad problem of the fact my younger sibling likes Disney. We lived in several cramped apartments. I could hear it through the walls. *cries*
D. Three people is a usual dynamic? It is? Huh, well...I suppose I'm anti-social, so... I can't even name the last time I sat around talking with two people who weren't related to me... And I tend to avoid dudes. But that's a mental barrier. I can't get past the dude in the green shirt who flying tackled me.
E. No one seems to notice that we're so busy trying to be PC we're annoying. Glee? Rather hilarious because the main characters are all as odd as I am. (Watch Star Trek with your grandparents--you'll see what I mean. Of course, it may have changed in recent...watch any show with my sibling and you'll see the same, though. No religion mentioned, only white people or only black people as main characters, etc. BORING.)
F. I should have added the fact all the shows are in high school. I'm talking teen shows here, too. Mostly. I watch adult shows...but the processed, repetitive stuff they're feeding tweens must stop! Or I'll have more kids telling me orcas live in the jungle...or something.

Some of your responses are awesome, though. I like the ideas and you seem to have familiar wants as I do. Gritty, realistic...comedy...good lighting...stuff like that.

And, yeah, maybe this wasn't where this topic should go. But, this is a discussion topic. Feel free to discuss stuff, too!
