Snakes and Ladders

Hey! Well, as it's autumn-winter, and I don't really have time after school to take nature photographs, I'm having a go with macro.
Reviews please! first macro shot I've done which I've set up, so hit me hard with your criticism! Thanks in advance!
(oh, btw, this wasn't done with a fancy macro lens, just a standard 18-55mm)



(also, just while I'm thinking about it. Considering buying a telephoto lens? (Probably 75-300mm). It'll mean I can get more wildlife shots etc... worth the money?

This is VERY cool, the thing i like most is how the dice is still in the air you set up the board and camera very well, i think its a perfect picture. Your photos get more amazing every time you upload a new one. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

So this is really cool. Normally I prefer simpler shots, but here, I think the chaos of the background actually works really well. I love the colors and it's focused very well. One question though: Is the dice really in the air, or does the shadow just make it look that way? Regardless, it's really good. Fantastic composition. =D

@explosivepen- The dice is in mid air I had to take around 300 shots in order to get one which I liked

Love the photo. it looks retro and I love how the die is moving through the air across the board. Beautiful picture. What camera are you using? I have the Nikon D3000 and I actually bought some macro filters which increase how close the 18-55 can get to the subject with out getting blurry. I also bought a telephoto lens when I got the camera. Mine is only 55-200 since it got the best reviews and the Sigma telephoto lens I was looking at gets a 'soft' look after you zoom any where past 200. But it is so worth it and it gives very cool depth of field effects. I would recommend it. Again, lovely photo.

Pity, isn't it, how sometimes you finish your homeworks and/or get out of school too late to be able to use nature's light and subjects? However, macro is quite fun, indoors or outdoors!

I just wanted to add my "two cents" about your photo, here! First of all, you did a brilliant job with the depth of focus in this image -- by focusing on the little "pins" and the dice, you created a foreground that was blurred, as well as a background, and it truly draws the viewers eyes towards the true subject of the picture, the pins, die, and red snake.

I love how bright the colors on the board are, and I also praise you -- you don't seem to have used your on-camera flash on this (perhaps a diffuser?). Or if you did use your camera's built-in flash, you did a wonderful job with it (generally, using a camera's flash can be disastrous, because it gives harsh shadows and lights).

Oh, and I adore how the dice is in mid-air! That's just wonderful, truly.

Okay, I could not resist answering your question. The 75-300mm is a great lens (it gets great reviews, whether you are with Canon or Nikon). However, if you are focusing more on macro, I'd recommend buying a lens that is specifically made for macro photography.

It truly is up to you, though. Perhaps do a bit of searching around before you ask for it, though -- look at some other lenses as well. I can't give any specific recommendations, as I don't know what brand your camera is. If possible, go to a camera store and ask them if you can give the lens a try, like a lease. You don't want to make a purchase as expensive as a lens without researching into it first. Trust me on that one.

I'm not wanting to focus on macro photography for a while. It doesn't really give me the same kick as photography with animals, nature, people etc does, so telephoto lens here I come

I think this is going to turn into a rather expensive hobby, as I'll be buying a camera bag and a tripod next week
