Fire and Ice Chapter 2
There are few words that can explain school for me, one is hell, another possibly prison, yeah definitely prison. These red and gold hallways are giving me a headache and to top it off the football team sucks. So in conclusion school is the last place I want to be, no matter the occasion.
It’s been a full month since school has started and it’s absolutely uneventful. As I trudged my way through the hallways, I reached Mrs. Miller’s 1st period English class.
“Good morning Mrs. Miller” I say with a half hearted smile. “Hello Matthew, I’m assuming you did your homework” she replied as she gathered her paper for the lesson. I simply chuckled and shook my head. I never do my homework. I’m at home right, then why should I do homework? It’s one of those things I will never understand, like why do I even go to school; I’m a lycan for crying out loud.
The room filled in and the scattered chatter faded away as Miller made her way to the front of the room. She typed something on her laptop and began to speak. “Today my dears, a new student will arrive and she will sit over there by Matthew” The entire room lasers their eyes toward me and then they burn a hole in the desk next to me. Instinctively I turn my head and the image of the empty desk is painted in my eyes. A fresh name tag is pasted on the top right corner of the desk. The most beautiful name I have ever heard races through my head. “Tara Grace” I breathed.
The invisible silhouette of this girl is unbelievably real, her ghost is truer then she is at this point. This empty seat beside me is so tranquil and lonely; it’s begging to be occupied.
As I faded into the cross section between my fascination with Tara Grace and the muffled words of Ms. Miller, a noise rose above and trickled into my brain. The jingle of the door handle made my heart beat faster and harder in my chest.
The door creaked open and the principle stepped into the room, his deep African voice boomed through the class room waking us up. “Excuse me Ms. Miller, your new student Tara Grace” I whispered her name as he said it “has arrived” He waved his hand signaling her to enter the room, and I saw the jaws drop of the boys closest to the door.
A massive shock of pain filtered through my body and I shut my eyes and slammed my throbbing head on the desk. I blanked out for a bit, maybe minutes, maybe just seconds.
A heavy thump hit me across my head and I woke immediately, Ms. Miller strolled down my row with a small textbook in her hand. For a second I almost forgot about the ghost beside me, but that empty chair was no longer empty but I was too afraid to look. I didn’t want to see anything less perfect than what I imagined, that perfect ghost that occupied my mind.
I wonder if she can read my mind, because at that moment a soft tapping paraded my shoulder. I took a deep breath, exhaled slowly, and inched my eyes towards her. Just a few degrees of movement, her beauty hit me. I nearly choked, my breathing became irregular and goose bumps covered my body.
I inched closer, and ever inch became more and more clear that my imagination is narrow and unsatisfying. Her beauty is something that I have never dreamed of, never read of, heard of, and absolutely never have seen. She stared with a confused look; I can’t imagine why not I am practically drooling.
Her eyes were like flashlights, they lit her up like the sun lights up the world. They were such a shade of blue that cannot be found in nature, it was like the crystal in ice, so cold yet on fire. Her hair fell perfectly over her face and flowed to her back, like water. It is red, a red that defied all reds, and a red that reminded me of blood. Not in the sense of evil, but in the beauty of blood. The fact that blood gives us all life, that beautiful flowing red is unimaginable.
Her pale skin and bone structure was one that no artist can represent. She was so perfect, so small and so delicate; everything about her all the way down to her little pink notebook was flawless.
To think it couldn’t get any better was fools thought, because when she smiled, the planets stopped in orbit. I could smell the flowers blooming and the sun shined in through the curtains. The love of the sun shined on her perfect silhouette, and she smiled again. Perfect ivory squares, organized into flawless symmetry.
She parted her lips and whispered, “Hi I’m”-I whispered with her- “Tara Grace”. And at that moment our eyes met, Fire and Ice.
