Rough Drafts-These are short literary devices that have to do with fall. I just thought I'd post it :P

Simile

I clamped my hands and bowed my head in prayer thanking God all the food that was laid out before me. When I opened my eyes they grew as large as watermelons when I spotted a huge, juicy turkey filled with my aunt’s homemade stuffing. The dining room table was like an enormous buffet as we all picked from the variations of food that were available. I ate and ate feeling as hungry as someone who hadn’t eaten for months. On my plate were all of my favorite Thanksgiving dishes; turkey with buttery mashed potatoes and think gravy, cranberry sauce made from scratch, cream corn with my mom’s secret ingredient, and warm dinner rolls with a dash of cream cheese. I felt like I was in a food eating contest, as more and more food kept piling on my plate. After finishing everything and not leaving a single crumb on my plate, my stomach bulged out from under my sweater and I felt as if I weighed more than the world’s fattest man. When dinner was done, and everyone’s stomach was delighted I realized how much I could be thankful for, and I felt as lucky as someone who had just won the lottery.

Metaphor

I walked down the block in my sumo wrestler costume. I felt like I had to best Halloween costume because my sumo wrestler outfit included an inflatable body, a wig, and face paint. Eager to make my light bag heavy I scanned the street for houses that had their lights on indicating that people were inside ready to give me candy. The moon was a flashlight, for it guided through a dark part of the neighborhood I had never been through before. I walked up to a house that had a bowl of candy outside their door and I was a thief as I grabbed all the candy that my hands could hold. I quickly ran from the house hoping that no one saw me take the all that candy, when sign on the bowl specifically said to only take one piece. I continued to walk down the strange deserted street, and I was a black cat, blending in with the dark night sky. Nervous and scared I continued walking until I got onto a familiar road with many other children trick-or-treating. I was a celebrity as people gasped and pointed at my unique Halloween costume. After the night was over I counted one hundred and thirty four pieces of candy and I was the luckiest kid on the planet.

Imagery

I stood twenty feet away from the frightening haunted house, my feet reluctant to move from their current position. The haunted house was enormous and looked as if it were an abandoned mansion that someone fixed up just for Halloween. I trotted up to the haunted house slowly, until I accidently walked into a large thin tangle of spider webs. “Ahhh!” I screamed and ran until I was at the haunted house entrance. I walked through the entrance revealing a series of pitch black, dirty tunnels that smelled of rotten food. On the walls they were stained with a dark, crimson red color that reminded me of blood and death. I followed a group of short, talkative teenage girls, making sure that there were people always in my sight. I heard and eerie, faint sound of footsteps behind me, making my heart beat a hundred times quicker. I turned my head and to my surprise and relief there was no one there. When I turned my head around again the group of teenagers that I was following magically disappeared. It was at that very second that the speakers in the haunted house turned on, and I heard the a deep, manly voice whisper over and over, I’m going to get you, I’m going to hurt you, I’m going to eat you, WATCH OUT! Overwhelmed with fear I ran into a series of cold dark passageways and tunnels making crunching sounds as I stepped on small broken bones, and dead dried up bugs. The dark crimson on the walls got darker and darker as I continued to run in the Haunted House. Hopeless, I wanted to scream and cry like a seven year old would do in this situation. Balls of wet, salty, tears formed in my eyes making the clear white clear white color start to turn red just like the walls. I was just about to turn around and go back the direction I came in when two musty, brown, poorly made signs caught my attention. I walked up to them and had to peer closely with my eyes until I could finally read them. One said YOU WANT OUT, THEN GO THROUGH HERE! The other one said LIKING THE HAUNTED HOUSE?? KEEP GOING HERE. They were both in front of two passageways covered by dark violet, silky, colored sheets. I didn’t give my decision a second thought as I dashed through my ticket out of this horrifying place. Beyond the curtain was the side exit of the haunted house. Panting, and crying I took a big breath of the fresh air, relieved that I had it out of that place unhurt, and alive.

Symbolism

“Mom, I’m going to take Lizzy for a walk,” I said to my mom.
“Ok,” my mom replied, without glancing up from her computer. “Be safe,” she added as I walked out of the door. Today was a warm day. The sun was out and shining, but there was also a breeze, which made it the perfect weather. As I kept walking with my dog I realized how many symbols there were in fall. The sun, the changes in weather, leaves changing their color and more. I kept walking and as I did I thought about some of the symbols there were and started saying them aloud. When summer ends, bright green leaves are replaced by orange, yellow, and brown leaves. The leaves change just like how a person’s personality changes. The bright leaves being replaced by dull leaves are a symbol, for how someone’s bright happy personality changes to a dull sad personality because the summer is over and school is starting. In the transition from summer to fall, all the food that has been grown and matured throughout the year is harvested. The food harvesting is a symbol for how throughout the previous year you were being matured and prepared for the next grade level you were going in to. For the crops once you were mature and grown enough you would be harvested. For yourself once you had learned everything you needed to learn you would go into the next grade level. The crops being harvested and new crops being planted are a symbol for you finishing your previous school year and starting a new one.

Onomatopoeia

Woohoo! The sound of thousands of voices screamed as number 28 Felix Jones on the Dallas Cowboys scored a touchdown. This game was what many fans had been waiting for; the rivalry game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins. No! C’mon! I heard a Washington Redskin fan shout beside me. I sat down and watched Tony Romo, the quarter back, run the ball in getting the extra two points for the Dallas Cowboys. I turned around to ask my brother what the score was when Klunk, I knocked over my Dr. Pepper spilling the cold sticky soda on my leg. Eeek I screamed as the syrupy soda seeped through my jeans and down my leg. I jumped up reacting to ice and blocking the person in front of me. “Hey!” he yelled and I sat back down. I finished wiping up the soda that clung to my jeans when Woohoo, the crowd roared to life as Keiland Williams on the Washington Redskins scored the first touchdown for his team. The same fan that was mad when the Cowboys scored was now jumping up and down in his seat and ecstatic as he let out a Whoop! Tick Tock, Tick Tock the clock sounded until RING, the buzzer went off signaling the end of the first quarter.

Personification

Ready for some apple picking, I hopped out of my mom’s sea green Prius, inhaling the sweet apple smell that was off in the distance. The apples called out to me as I walked out to the huge field containing dozens of apple trees. The branches of the largest tree that sat in the center of field alone, waved with all its arms as I got nearer to it. Without waiting for the rest of my family I ran up to the tree feeling its hard rugged trunk, and strong, firm limbs. As I reached for a granny smith apple, it swung itself back and forth before I grabbed it and bit into it feeling the sweet, sour taste of the apple fill my mouth. One by one the flower and leaves shivered as a cool breeze started to form. I picked up my jacket and it clung onto my shoulders, providing me with soothing, comforting warmth. Once I finished my apple, I threw its biodegradable core on the floor, and picked up my basket ready to pick all the apples that my hand could handle. I whispered to the apples and they responded by dancing to the melody of the wind. They continued dancing over and over until my basket fell onto the floor, tired from the 7 pounds of apples that it was carrying. Time flew by and before I knew it the evening was now replaced with a beautiful night sky. The last of my apple picking was done and I returned back to my mom’s car, as the tree sat lonely by itself once again.

Satire

“Now that we’re all here, Joey would you like to bless the food,” Aunt Sabine said.
“Sure but give me a sec, I have to make an important phone call,” I replied getting out of my chair and going into the other room. I flipped open my phone dialing the number for the Burn of Thanksgiving Dinner Fitness Center. Ring, Ring the phone spoke, until the person on the other line picked up. “Hello, this is Nancy,”
“Hi Nancy, this is Joey. I am calling to make an appointment for an exercise program that is going to help me burn off a Thanksgiving dinner.”
“Ok, and what will your Thanksgiving dinner include?”
“I am going to have ¾ of a pound of Turkey, ½ a pound of mashed potatoes with 5 ounces of gravy, I cup of cream corn, and 3 dinner rolls.”
“Ok, adding up all the food means that you will need do a running, biking, swimming, and weight lifting course for 25 days to get back to normal weight,”
“Ok,”
“And does your meal include pumpkin pie?”
“Oh yeah pumpkin pie. I am going to have 2 slices of that,”
“Ok then I’ll boost up your number of days to 30 not 25,”
“Ok and you’re name is”
“Joey Hagan,”
“Ok Joey Hagan, your courses will start tomorrow, and continue for 30 days.”
“Thank you very much,”
“You’re welcome and I hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving Dinner,”
“Will do, bye,”
“Bye,”
I closed my phone and returned back to the dinner table to have all my family members staring at me with puzzled expressions. “ What? Did you want me to set up an appointment for you too?”

Hi there! I am Esther and I shall be reviewing your pieces today.

Interesting idea; telling stories using specific writing devices instead of blending them up. I liked them all. Only issues here is that A) Your grammar needs work and B) a couple of the pieces are bland. I'll let you know what I mean later in this review. Let's review this tidbits in order, shall we? Corrections will be in red.

SIMILIE:

I clamped my hands and bowed my head in prayer thanking God all the food that was laid out before me. When I opened my eyes they grew as large as watermelons when I spotted a huge, juicy turkey filled with my aunt’s homemade stuffing. The dining room table was like a huge buffet as we all picked from the variations of food (put a d after "foo". that were available. I ate and ate feeling as hungry as someone who hadn’t eaten for months. On my plate were all of my favorite Thanksgiving dishes; turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, and corn bread. After finishing all my food and going back for seconds my stomach bulged out under my sweater and I felt as if I weighed more than the world’s fastest Fastest? Don't you mean fattest? man. After I finished my dinner I felt like there was a lot to be thankful for, and I felt as lucky as someone who just won the lottery.

Okay, I just pointed out some spelling errors, just so this makes more sense. I like this simple, family feel of this. Your issue is that you have a lot of run on sentences here. Some of the sentences are so long that they are difficult to understand, even. I suggest that you go through this and edit it so that the sentences are complete and shorter.

METAPHOR:

I walked down the block in my sumo wrestler costume scanning the street for houses that had their lights on indicating that people were inside ready to give me candy. The moon was a flashlight, for it guided me down a street that I had never walked down before. I walked up to a house that had a bowl of candy outside their door and I was a thief as I grabbed all the candy that my hands could hold. I continued to walk down the strange deserted street, and I was a black cat, blending in with the dark night sky. I continued walking until I got onto a familiar road with many other children trick-o-treating. I was a celebrity because everyone was amazed and awed by my unique sumo wrestler outfit. (I'll explain in the next part) After the night was over I counted one hundred and thirty four pieces of candy and I was the luckiest kid on the planet.

Ah, so we are now on to the metaphor. I adore metaphors; I use them all the time. So there is a reason I have issue with this. You want to know what it is? You are explaining your metaphors! Metaphors are supposed to be obvious relations to the subject you are talking about. Readers should be able to understand what your metaphor means without you having to explain it. If you have to explain your metaphor, you are not doing your part as a writer. Try to go through this and make the metaphors better so that you don't have to explain them. I understand that this is all metaphors, but actually similies would work better in some areas.

ONOMATOPOEIA:

I couldn't actually read this too well. Your sentences lacked commas and then ran together. I like the imagery in this though! It was if I could feel the crowd growing in excitement. Your biggest issue are your run ons, once again. Go through this and edit it! However, your use of onomatopoeia is very nice.

Personification

I hopped out of my mom’s sea green Prius, inhaling the sweet apple smell that was off in the distance. (where is this character? You never explained. I actually thought he or she was in the park.
The apples called out to me as I walked out to the huge field containing dozens of apple trees. (nice) The
branches of the largest tree that sat in the center of field alone, waved with all its arms as I got nearer to
it. Without waiting for the rest of my family I ran up to the tree feeling its hard rugged trunk, and strong,
firm limbs. As I reached for a granny smith apple, it jumped into my hand, and I bit into it feeling the
sweet, sour taste of the apple fill my mouth. (That isn't personification. You state this as if the apple literally jumped into his hand, which isn't personification. Phrase this better)
One by one the flower and leaves shivered as a cool breeze
started to form. I picked up my jacket and it jumped onto my shouldersc (comma comma comma comma chameleon!) providing me with soothing,
comforting warmth. Once I finished my apple, I threw its biodegradable core on the floor, and picked
up my basket ready to pick all the apples that my hand could handle. I whispered to the apples and they
responded by leaping into my basket. (Again, you are using literal sense instead of personification, I believe.)
They continued over and over until my basket fell onto the floor,
tired from the 5 pounds of apples that it was carrying. Time flew by and before I knew it the evening was
now replaced with a beautiful night sky. The last of my apple picking was done and I returned back to
my mom’s car, as the tree sat lonely by itself once again.
(NICE)

Okay, your problem here is your inconsistent use of description. Sometimes your use of personification are spot on, and then sometimes it seems like you are making the apples do magical things. Again, grammar issues. Spelling is good though.

OVERALL:

I enjoyed all of these. I only wish they were more grammatically correct. I hope you take the time to go through and edit these, because they would be so cool when they are polished! Go through your tidbits and make sure the devices you use are not forced. That seems to be the major problem of all of these, especially the metaphor. Overall, good job. Thank you for the interesting read.

Thanks for the review, I didn't really edit these because they are rough drafts, but I'll be sure to change them. Thanks again.
