This is for my art class. We're doing illuminated letters (if you don't what that is, search on Google). This is simply a rough draft. If you can't see some of the lines, it's simply because I haven't darkened them yet. I'd merely like some input on what I should fix/improve. It was fairly complicated to draw, so I don't want any additions to the piece, unless it's a line or something.
Part of the picture was cut off, it was only the border which the exact same as the top. The main part (the letter) is not cut off at all.
Pretty cool! The idea in general is really interesting and intricate, and I have no clue how you can have such patience to draw a single letter this way. BUT there still are things you could improve, mainly in your lines. You probably have the kind of hand that always wants to draw in those tiny little sketch lines...and it's a hard thing to break yourself out of, but really you don't want to do little lines that way. It makes it look kind of choppy, and then you have to go over it again to make it bolder. It looks like you did this on your e and if it was intentional then that's fine (it's art; to each his own, right?) but just some advice for the future if you didn't intend for it. But whether or not you did, it's still pretty good technically and is very nice artistically.

Oooh. This is pretty. I like the detail you added. The dog (is it a dog?) at the bottom of the E looks kind of cartoon-ish. I don't know if that's the look you were going for; I think it's cute, but it doesn't seem to fit in with the piece. I don't like the little head sticking out of the top of the E. It just seems randomly placed there, like an afterthought. I like the leaves at the bottom of the E. Overall, it could be a little rounder, and your lines could be smoother, but technically, it's a lot better than I could do. I hope I see more art from you; you're very talented.

The animal(s) at the tip(s) of the "e" are/is actually a dragon. Being inspired by traditional Celtic illumination, dragons are used frequently. But thanks for the reviews! I'll try to get the dragon to be a little less doglike and I little more fire-breathing-beast-like.
Good, good, but I think you should use a ruler in some places. You're doing pencil now, but I suggest you go over it with a dark pen and then erase the pencil lines; makes it a much better work and you can correct all your mistakes in pencil. Will you be coloring it? I'm not sure about the colors, but you could just google some illuminated letters already existing for ideas on color schemes (I'm pretty sure they were a bright, bold colors). Also, you have the basic "e" shape as an outline, but then you just filled the outline with boxes of different designs (The lattice-work, the vines, the fish-shapes under the dragon head, and the ribbony things at the top). It doesn't look very nice, and I'm sure you could do with a few more lines around the edges*, like some illuminated letters I've seen before.
*What I mean is that you should draw a very careful outline of the entire letter and then color it in...then more outlines and so forth.
Hello, Lavender! =) This is a very cool project. I pretty much had an idea of what illuminated text is when I saw your letter. I have to say, you've done a pretty good job in designing, and since it's just a rough draft, we'll concentrate on the things you can still improve on.
One thing that caught my eyes is the dragon. (I'm pretty sure that's a dragon.) Its mouth kinda looks like a dog's. You better point that out a bit. Look intently at the common dragon:
Now that we've seen that, let's go to the letter itself. When you draw the final picture, be sure to smooth out the edges of the letter, okay? Especially because it's a G, and a G is round, making it harder to draw.
The design is just amazing. I myself hate thinking about those kinds of designs. I guess, I'm too lazy. So great job there! I hope you keep in mind the things I told you when you draw the final picture! Keep it up!
