Hey guys, this is part two of the first chapter of The Romanov, please please please comment, this is my most favorite piece that I have ever written and I want your thoughts on it, thanks Addawen.
After thoroughly beating the shit out of Pierce, and knocking him unconscious, I swiped the folder from his breast pocket. Stupid, stupid men, when will they learn that we can do anything they can do, only better, and in heels.
It would be a while before he regained conciousness, then I will hear nothing but his insessent whining, therefore for now the apartment is quiet, I am not expecting anymore callers, I don't have a land-line, and my neighbors don't even know I exist, their choosing, so I am free for the time being.
Throwing myself onto the chocolate brown couch, I sprawl out in the most ungraceful way, legs and arms askew. For the briefest of moments, I let my mind and body alike, drift into nothingness, completely relaxing against the worn couch. I close my eyes, Pierce's even breathing putting me in a trance, even I start breathing more deeply and slowly, I can feel sleep coming. It is almost there, then a horrid gaping face jumps at me. So startled was I that I practically lept off the couch, my gun ready in hand, for the nameless monster that haunts me.
I let a few seconds go by, my body rigid and alert, damn nightmare, a few more seconds tick by until I am satisfied that it is just me and the sleeping Pierce. Tucking the handgun in the back of my jeans, I grab the manilla folder from the floor and decide to sit at the coffee table on the floor, couches were too dangerous.
Spreading the portfolio of the next three clients out on the glass table top, my mind buzzing; three at once was unheard of even for the best, which I happen to be. What did my boss have in mind? What did these poor souls step into that caused them to be such an extreme target?
The first folder contained a picture of a happy young woman; Liv Kolbeck, strange name, it listed her age, height, weight, etc. etc. she looked like a normal college kid, what part did she play in all this, and what part was that?
“Liv.” the name sounded foreign on my multi-lingual tongue. Scrunching up my nose, I studied her picture, one of the first things you learn in my type of business; memorization.
Dark brown pixie hair, sharp cheeks bones, small nose, she had a very elf like quality about her, petite. There was something else about her, something glittered in her dark eyes, something impure- something I don't know- just something else.
She stood about 5'7, towering over my 5'4, but then again most people did. She studies at- surprise surprise, Juilliard, wow prestigious School of the Arts.
I chuckled under my breath, “She won't be hard to take out, a little prima ballerina, fragile.”
I skimmed over the rest of her file, it didn't really give me much else to go on, sure it happened to add that she did taekwondo in her spare time, but that was nothing to me, it would be like watching Barbie take karate, pathetic.
Looking at her pretty smiling picture once more, I took out a giant red sharpie, and scribbled one word: accident. That's how it would look, like an accident.
Smiling to myself I bit my bottom lip, “This is going to be fun.”
I went to pick up the next folder, when I heard Pierce moan, what a baby.
“Great, just great.” I growl, eyeing him coldly where he laid on the suede love seat.
Jumping up from the floor, I stomp into the cold steel kitchen, producing a bag of frozen peas, I just happened to have in the freezer, though I hate peas. Walking back into the living room, Pierce is clutching at his shoulder and head, groaning and whining, crying it sounded like but to save the last of his pride I wouldn't mention it.
I force the bag of frozen vegetables onto his bruised and battered face, he shouts several profanities, clawing at me unsuccessfully with his big meaty hands, rolling my eyes I begin to pace.
“So what's the deal?” I ask the big baby laying on my couch.
He looks at me with pure hatred, much unlike the look he was giving me before I kicked his ass in the kitchen not a hour ago. Those deep grey eyes had once held passion for me, a strange and glorious passion, but that was long ago, and I had no intention to bring it up.
Pierce sat up slowly, holding his bandaged shoulder gingerly. The shot had been a through and through, it left little to no damage, yet he held it like it would fall off, the big fat baby.
“What do you mean?” he asked, wincing when he moved the thawing peas to his shoulder.
Red hot anger swelled through me, I rushed towards him my hand raised to strike, but just before I lost my control, I stilled my anger, understanding the meaning of seeing red.
My hand falls gently to my side, my nails digging into my skin, itching to hit him upside his head. I take a deep calming breath, maybe he didn't know, maybe he really was just stupid, or- or there was an ulterior motive, the later won out.
“Spill it Pierce,” I urged, crossing my arms across my chest. “Why the sudden want to attack me?”
His jaw tightened, that Adonis face impassive. “You pissed me off.” he shrugged his good shoulder, as if saying 'eh'.
My teeth snapped together, grinding, I was loosing an already lost battle against him, Pierce had the gall to smile, jackass. Taking another deep semi-calming breath, I attempted to count to three.
One...two...thr- was he laughing?
Opening my eyes I caught him chuckling, that son of a bitch was laughing at me. Me; a five foot four, one hundred-fifteen pound, Russian immigrant, who had just completely wiped the floor with his ass in the kitchen not an hour ago, and I was just about ready to do it again, he was laughing at me. Jack must have had a death wish.
I lost it.
My control was thrown out the window as I rushed at him, a scream escaped my lips, my hands raised high to finish him off. When the unthinkable happened, just as my fists were inches from his beautiful sculpted face, quicker than a whistle, Jack grabbed my wrists throwing me onto the couch, wrapping his massive tree trunk like arms around me, he buried me beneath him into the overstuffed couch.
I let out a long deafening scream, right before he brought his warm lips down onto mine, kissing me into submission.
I was shocked and angered at first, struggling with him all the way, further wounding his busted shoulder, and all he did was kiss me harder and with more passion than ever before.
His hand slid up my shirt, stroking my soft hot skin, giving me goosebumps, and I just melted beneath him, like the sad pathetic woman that I am, I melted.
God what was I thinking?
This, this is what I have been trying to forget, this is what I didn't want you to know.
When I first started this job, or whatever you want to call it, Pierce and I had a very hot and heavy fling, very hot and heavy. I was young and naïve, and your probably thinking so what? Everybody does it, everybody has had an “office” type fling.
But, this is where everything went to hell in a handbasket. I had thought that it would evolve into something much much more, I thought I was in love. My God was I wrong, so wrong.
Months into our fling, I began to rise in rank, I came one level beneath him, and you would think that Pierce being the All-American guy, would be happy with my success, well like the jackass that he is, and quite frankly all men really are. He hated me for it, he hated the thought that I could out rank him, that I could one day be number two, and he lower than a woman. Well that just didn't fly with him, so he set out to ruin me. Permanently.
Only I didn't take it laying down like a normal woman would, I fought back, soon it was known amongst our fellow co-workers to never be in the same room with us, because blood was bound to fly, it wasn't a pretty sight.
Laying beneath Jack, hurt and not just physically, it had brought back everything that I had attempted to hide, to close off. The way his rough hands scraped against my skin, sliding up around my ribcage, caressing me until I was putty in his hands.
I wanted to scream out loud in agony, but all I heard was my muffled voice letting out a small moan of ecstasy. Weak. Weak, I am so weak.
Pierce pulls back slightly, ending the passionate kiss, his grey eyes harsh, his supple mouth twisting into a cruel smile. With all my might I am pushing against his heavy chest, hating the way that I am sobbing against him, my little fists pound and pound, but unlike early this morning there is no fight in me, I am defeated.
“Little Rowe,” he chuckles condescendingly, twisting a strand of my rich chestnut hair around his finger. “Sad.” he shakes his head, rolling off me just enough so that I could escape.
Jumping off the couch, I whipped out my concealed handgun, aiming it point blank at his ugly smiling face, tears tearing down my heated cheeks.
I can imagine how I looked, with my hair in tangled knots flying about me, my blue eyes so full of venom, I imagined I looked crazy.
“Sad?” I spat, pulling back the hammer. My small body tense, muscles rigid with excitement, I was excited. “Sad, I'll show you sad.” my voice was tight, like a coiled spring.
Aiming the barrel at his head, not a single emotion passed through me. All the hate and hurt just vanished, I was what I had been trained to be; a cold hearted killer.
Time vanished before me, as I hooked my index finger around the trigger, there was no looking back, there was only moving forward without Pierce, what a greater world it will be without his sorry ass.
I put the slightest amount of pressure on the trigger, noticing that Pierce wasn't shitting his pants about now, his face had remained impassive of fear, his lips barely held a smile.
There was something else going on, but I was too caught up in the desire to end Jack's life, that I couldn't see it, or I didn't want to see it.
Just a little bit more pressure and Jack Nicholas Pierce would be dirt between my toes.
The thought knocked me for a loop, it was within my grasp, I could taste it, the feeling of victory, the carnal desire to see blood, his blood pooling onto the hard wood floor, it was almost unbearable.
“Goodbye Jack.” I smiled maliciously, slowly pulling the trigger.
His life was in my hands, I could feel it dripping from my palms, the power I held over him was magnificent, and then my Blackberry went off. That treacherous little fiend. Robbing me of anything I have ever wanted in my life, gone in the blink of an eye, or in this case the ring of a phone.
I paused, listening to my cell phone continue it's obnoxious little ring, it was probably my boss, wondering where the hell his second was at, within an inch of dying.
“Fuck.” I exhaled, bringing the phone to my ear, while keeping aim at Pierce's fat head.
“Ana, don't.” the calm soothing voice of my boss sounded against my ear.
“Don't what, Max?” I ask coyly, casting a glance at Jack, little droplets of sweat beaded down his temples.
He chuckled, the warm sound piercing my cold exterior. “Don't make me have to take you out too.” the words were a threat, but his tone was anything but.
“Is that a threat, Max?” my smile grew wider, I saw Piece shudder.
Again he laughed, Max was the essence of calm, in any situation imaginable. One reason why I lowered my arm, but I hadn't turned the safety on, while Max was calm I was cautious.
