Chapter 3: Blood is Thicker Than Water
When I got to the house I parked the cart in the garage and walked around front. I made sure not to step on the cracked parts; I was quite superstitious. I heard the door open and Alissa ran out the door. I picked her up, her legs wrapped around my waist as she hugged me.
I looked at her and she smiled. She was my biological daughter but only a few knew that. Her real name was Alissa but she only used her nickname, Angel. She was one now but looked like she was maybe five. She was growing the same way everyone did. We grow really fast then stop when we looked to be in our twenties. I set her back down and she ran back in the door.
Our house had two levels with a gray siding. The grass was cut to a perfect, lush green. I hated when things were out of order and didn’t look right. Specific yellow tulips with green side lines that looked to be painted on were flown in by my specific request. I had always loved those flowers and made sure they planted them when I moved in.
I walked up to the white door and smiled, Star leaned against the doorframe his face was straight, showing no emotion. He did this so I could never read him. I smiled and quickened my pace. When I was close enough he slipped inside. He motioned for me to hurry inside. Raising my eyebrows I walked in and he closed the door behind me. I followed him upstairs and into the kitchen. Sitting down with shaded glasses on was Jess his eyes locked on the table.
I’m sorry. He said telepathically still looking at the table with his lips in a straight line.
“He was in a fight.” Star said angrily as Jess pulled the glasses down. Star’s dark violet eyes with the black rim light up in anger. I went over to Jess and kneeled down next to him. His left eye had gone black. His ice blue eye with emerald green horizontal stripes stood out. I went over to the freezer and grabbed a bag of peas and threw it at him. Before a mortal could blink he had it in his hand and it was against his eye. He moaned in pain as it touched the bruise. The kid was stupid, he knew the rules. Don’t get in fights we could lose our jobs and our house. We could be kicked out of the program and thrown into the real dangers.
For a kid that was nine he looked nineteen. He was 5’11 and had chestnut brown hair that fell to his ear lobes. It was straight and was cut in short layers over his right eye. His old name was Jessie Mathews. His gift was unusual and not very useful in combat. He was a medium, as in a person who can see and communicate with the dead.
In a flash I was in my room looking up at the blank white ceiling, there was a knock at my door and I pushed myself up on my elbows to see Star knocking at the door. His chocolate brown curly hair fell to his chin and swept across his forehead in a swish motion. He was eighteen but looked like he was twenty-four. He was 6’2 and looked like a god in my eyes. His muscles stood out under his cotton t-shirt. He had the most unique eyes I had ever seen. They were dark violet with a black rim around the iris, it stood out against his pale skin and hair.
He vanished in a second then something pushed my hair back behind my ear then kissed the base of my neck. Did I forget to mention his gift was invisibility? I stood up and he appeared instantly looking hurt.
“What’s wrong? He said walking over to me, I had just noticed he wore a pair of faded blue jeans and a dark navy blue cotton t-shirt and a black leather jacket over top. He wrapped his arms around my waist and I pushed him away.
“Is this about Jess or something at work?”
“Does it matter?” I turn around and look at him surprised, he stared back at me until he was in front of me and I was hugging him.
I moved my head and rested it in the hollow of his neck.
Why do you do this to yourself?
I wrapped my arms his neck and looked over his shoulder.
I do it for my daughter, for our daughter. I thought to myself.
“Sometimes I just wish the memories of my past would disappear.”
“I know your childhood was rough but wasn’t all of ours.”
“No, mine goes way deeper than yours. You have no idea.”
“Why don’t you tell me then.”
“I, I can’t. I promised myself I wouldn’t tell anyone. I promised him I wouldn’t say anything.”
“Did someone do stuff to you Idda?” I cringed at my name. I shook my head no.
I only wished he could be here, so I could be myself. So I didn’t have to hide anymore. Star looked in my eyes searching for answers.
“You can tell me anything, you know that.” No, I can’t tell you everything. I thought to myself. He would come and kill you himself. He would do it just to keep our secret safe. He would do it just to keep me safe so he could have me.
“No I can’t Star. You would get hurt and I don’t want that.” Not yet at least.
If only the memories of ‘them’ would disappear and not creep into my dreams making me cry out in the night. So I wouldn’t have these spasms and I wouldn’t freak out my new family. So I could have a normal life for now.
I will have you back. His voice echoing in my head. It repeated over and over again until I couldn’t take it. I pushed Star back and ran my hands through my hair frustrated. Star looked at me with raised eyebrows. The tears crept down my cheeks.
“I just can’t tell you Star. It just doesn’t work that way. You have to live. Soon enough you will understand what I mean. I can feel him, I can sense him every where and it scares me. I can hear his thoughts when I’m sleeping and the way he tries to summon me to him.”
“Who?”
I turned around and pushed Star backwards.
“I told you I can’t tell you.” My anger was building up as I looked at him. I turned away and Star mumbled something. I went to the wall and slid down to the floor. I breathed slowly and when I was calm enough I stood up. I went over and hugged him, he hugged me back slowly as if he was unsure of something.
“You will know who soon enough. Right now is just not a good time for you to know. You can’t die yet.”
Chapter 4: Secrets
His hug tightened and then he was gone. My knees buckled and I fell to the floor. I could not breathe and I could feel my muscles starting to have the spasms I was learning to recognize. Jess went by and screamed. I looked up at him and mouthed Star. Jess screamed for Star and he came running in not a second later. Angel ran in right after him giving me an odd look.
She forced Star to stay where he was and rushed over. She flipped me on my back and placed her tiny hands against the sides of my face. There was a soothing sensation that went through my body and I felt my muscles relax. I closed my eyes trying to escape the pain that still lingered.
Mommy, just relax. Don’t think about any of them. Just come back to us. You’re scaring Daddy and Jess. Please mom. Mom you’re scaring me. Wake up Mommy. Her soft, quiet voice said to me. Her voice was soothing and opened my eyes. Angel took her hands off and looked down in my eyes smiling. I closed my eyes and slowly breathed in and out in deep breaths. After what seemed like hours to me I finally opened my eyes. Star had moved to the bed and sat with his hands on his head between his knees. He was muttering something so low that even I couldn’t hear it. What was worse was he wasn’t concentrating on what he was saying, making it hard for me to pick up on what he was saying. .
He cursed loudly and I rubbed my head from the echo. As I tried to get up I hit a small table and broke one of my favourite vases. Cursing I picked the pieces up and threw them in the garbage before going over and sitting down next to him. He wouldn’t even look at me. He was just muttering random words that no one could understand. I nudged his shoulder and he grunted something that sounded like I’m thinking.
I slowly stood up and walked around the room rubbing my shoulders and rolling my neck out. He finally looked up at me when I sat down next to him. His eyes had darkened and he sighed letting out his breath slowly. I laughed quietly not knowing how to react. I ended up just looking down at the carpet making sure to not make any eye contact with him.
When he spoke I felt uncomfortable. It felt as if I shouldn’t be there, as if I shouldn’t be talking to him. It didn’t seem right, Star didn’t seem right. It felt forbidden to be this close to him. I shook off the feeling trying not to scare myself.
“What is with you? This has happened three times this week and four times last week.” I rolled my shoulders nervously. I stood up but he caught my hand turning me around. He stood up and kissed me softly.
“I feel like you're holding secrets from me Idda. You can trust me, you can tell me. ”
“We just had this conversation. I can’t tell you.”
I pushed back slightly but not fast enough that he was still able to see the tear that fell to the floor slowly. He cupped my chin with his left hand and kissed where the tear had fallen on my cheek. I stepped closer and let my guards down. I pushed the memory of that day towards him. He sucked in a sharp breath as he watched what I had seen.
The pain and emotions overwhelmed him and his body tensed up. I could feel my thoughts in his head as I could feel him asking the same questions I did. He wrapped his arms around me and I put my head in the hallow of his neck. I concentrating on that fateful day.
It had all started with him, the new one. The one I saw die exactly three weeks ago. The one that made my past become my future. The boy that made me hear his thoughts clearer.
Chapter 5: Another Lost
It was the offical day of spring when it happened. I had watched every moment of that day vivdly in my dreams each night. His name was Robert Lake. He was only eleven when he was murdered. I had gone in for testing at the research lab in the base. I thought it would be just a normal day but unlike my normal routines they made me watch him die to see how I reacted.
They told me he was just like me. His gift was being able to see the future and he was a strong one too. He had been able to predict his death at age four. They dragged him into one of the white rooms I had visited to many times. They then walked me in and tied me to one of the chairs there. I could remember him being tied to a table bounds on his wrists and ankles and around his biceps. They called him an Invisible I could remember that clearly.
I remembered the scientists telling me he had extreme strength but not close to mine. He lifted his head to meet my gaze, he barely nodded and then lowered in back down. His amazing emerald green eyes with a silver pupil felt like they had just starred a hole through my head. It was as if he knew my secret. It was as if he looked into the hollow hole inside me and understood.
He began to talk to me.
So you are the one they are always talking about.
“Depends on what they say.” I answered out loud.
Well the men say you’re a goddess. The women wish they were you. The scientists and army wish you were dead. They never would attempt to kill you though because they know what you can do. What your strengths are, but they also know your weaknesses. All those tests completely freak them out. They are so scared of you it makes their skin crawl at the thought of killing you. I mentally nodded to him
“So why are they killing you?”
They want all of us dead and when you crack you die. Their rules take our lives. They believe we were sent here by Satan himself just to make everyone else look bad.
“So I guess you know everything about me.” I said, he began laughing out loud but cursed as they stuck a needle in his left wrist.
Not everything but I have seen many things about you that scare me. Take care of your family and always keep close tabs on them. You are in grave danger so try to leave as fast as you can. I can’t say why but remember to use your gifts. They are an advantage in this cruel world. Train hard and get out fast. Don’t fight the past just embrace it. You shouldn’t be afraid of what you did. You did it to protect yourself and your family. Good-bye, we will meet again. Mom.
Images of his life flashed through my eyes. I saw them inject him with a silver liquid and he screamed and his back curved. I screamed and jumped out breaking the bounds that held me there. The guards jumped but I easily took them out. I rushed over to Robert to see the colour of his eyes faded to white. I screamed even louder and they sent more guards in.
They all had a taser but that didn’t stop me, a short kick in the temples to two of them. A kick in the stomach to another, which made him crunch his body together, I could tell his bottom ribs were broken. Grabbing the taser out his hand I took out the last two with it. Making sure the first two were out, I tasered them and kicked them both in the sides.
There was a blue of white and he stood in front of me. He had long golden hair and golden eyes like honey.
I will have you back. No matter what it takes. You know that.
“No, I gave you up remember.”
You ran there is a difference.
“No there isn’t.”
I felt weak with him standing in front of me. He stepped over all the knocked out men. When he stood in front of me I felt the emotions rise again. He wrapped his arms around me and me and whispered.
“Sometimes you can’t run away from the truth my love.”
“No, I’m not that girl anymore. No one will get hurt now.” I screamed at him.
“Are you sure? I can easily make that happen. You know I can.”
“No please, I have to do it this time. You always come and save me. I have to do it this time or else he wont stay dead.”
The man looked at me and nodded. He bent down and kissed me. A long passionate kiss just like the old days. He stepped back and disappeared into a blinding white light.
