I haven't drawn anything in a really long time, but I thought I'd try my hand at sketching Jared Leto, the lead singer from 30 Seconds to Mars (my obsession!). I quite like it but I don't think it really looks much like him. I can't do him justice! So tell me all the things wrong with this and how to fix it, and please be kind! For reference, here's the pic I was using as my reference: http://www.memphisinmay.org/assets/1227 ... o_mars.jpg *hits submit and cringes*

So, I think that this is a good sketch (and a good subject c: ), but I can see what you mean. I would think about making more of a furrow in his brow, soften the nose a bit, make the eyes a bit smaller.... perhaps accentuate the cheekbone a bit, and it might look a bit more like him.

That sounds like a lot, I know, but those are the differences between your person and Jared Leto, I think.
Anywho- the sketch itself is good, and it's always difficult to capture people from a photograph. You did a good job considering.
Also, it's awesome because 30 Seconds to Mars is awesome. :)

Nice piece.

Hiya, Pink here :)

So overall, I like this picture. But there are a few points that bothered me. First of was his head, I think it's slightly larger when compared to the rest of his body, I suggest making it smaller (if possible) I know it's hard to fix drawings, especially sketches. As far as the facial features go, you did a pretty good job, my main peeve with his face though, was his ear, it looks a bit triangular and sharp, almost like an elf instead of round and smooth.
I think the hair needs some more definition and a little shading could help here and there but overall, it's a pretty good picture. I looks like him, too :D Plus, I love his jacket, I heart that style :3

Hiya :}

As I came on, I could see that it was a fairly good drawing. Yet, im here to critizise; Not compliment

What came to me instantly is the frame of his body. It's tiny and from the angle your viewing him, his body should either be broader, or, just draw his right side of his body.
You've pretty much nailed the hair, yet you could still define it, adding some more INDIVIDUAL texturising, as well as widing his fringe (as i remember he had, from old memories).
But, if i saw his face, I wouldn't think Jared Leto. I'd just think random man.
If you did not mention that it was Jared Leto, i wouldnt of recognized him. You should refine his features, to fully get a good drawing of him.

Hey Matt!

That is a good sketch but it could be edited for better. Anyway, I have no clue who this is, so I shall give a more generalized set of comments.
1. The stubble: This is the most prominent feature, and right now, it looks like you were a bit frustrated and poked the paper with the pencil. Milder, lots more dots would work or if you made it mild and made a tiny comma-like strokes. Since it is hair, a leetle stroke would be good.
2.Eyes: I see you've worked hard on it. My only thing is clean up the pencil shades inside. It looks messy. Otherwise, it's fine.
3.Hair: As nova said, more individual texturing would help.
4.Neck: You need to give subtle hints of a neck even if it really can't be seen, else this would look like a floating ghost-head. The picture you linked us to, if you look carefully, you'll see a fine band of flesh for the neck.
5.The other half of his chest: This is another major thing I noticed. True in the photo, because of the depth and colour, you can see that he's turned. But for artwork, you'll need to add hints of shadow and mildly show the presence of the other side of his body.

So, yes, it need touch ups but is a good piece.

Hello there, my name is Flower, and I will be your reviewer for the evening.

First off, I really like this. I don't think it really looks like him, but I do like how you drew the picture. I suppose I will review in a way that you could make it look more like him if you wanted. (Which you probably wont)

The first thing I noticed is the largeness of his head. I think that in the original picture his head seems more small, and shrunken into his coat. Maybe if you enlarged his jacket it would look smaller. I think that lengthening his coat collar would help this.

I like this eyes on this sketch, but in order to look more like him I would propose that you shrink them. Also add some definition to them. Give him some eyelashes, and make them darker where his eyes are dark.

I love his eyebrows! I am never good at doing eyebrows. I don't know why I have problems with them, I just do. Anyway! I would suggest furrowing his brow more. You know like making it all wrinkled. I think it would make him more like the original person.

On his facial hair, I would suggest shading it more. Also I would lighten it, it seems like he has a bunch of achne, or something of the sort, on his face. Just use a tortillion, and then lighten it up a little.

Ear: I think that his ear runs in with his hair to much. There needs to be a fine line between the two. Believe me I know this is very hard to do, I have trouble with ears myself.

Hair: I like his hair, but I think you should shade it some more. It seems a bit run together and messy on the page.

Last but not least, his outfit. I like this, but it seems to close to his body. Make his jacket come out more. In the picture his body almost sinks into his jacket, here you have it plastered to him.

Other than that this is very nice! I hope I helped you out, let me know if you need anything, even a review!

Hi Matt! This is a very nice sketch, but the main problem I saw was the eyes. His pupils are a bit small, and lack that lifelike touch. I find that a great way to add life to eyes is to imagine the sun or some sort of artificial light coming from somewhere off of the page, then erase exactly where that light hits the eyes. That gives the ees a sort of glint, as though light were actually being reflected off of it. Also, shading around the eys is crucial. It might be nice if you added a crease underneath the eys to show where the cheek begins, as well as a crease over the eyes to resemble the eyebrows. Also, to show that the eyes are quite a bit set into the head, rather than bulging out from a flat face, you might consider highlighting the area just above the eyes in a slightly dark color, then let the color fade just below the eyebrows. I hope this helps!

TO begin: I love 30 Seconds to Mars. Actually, if there was a descriptive more powerful than love, I would use it. I actually began writing a novel based on the song Night of the Hunter. Anyway, to step away from the stalker obsession for a moment, let's return to the sketch...
I was an art major for over a year, and one of the things I picked up in my drawing classes was how to translate a photograph to a sketch. First, draw a grid of 1in by 1in on the photograph (I use photos with the dimensions 6in by 8in) and then on the paper just make sure that the grid you draw will correlate with the grid on the photograph (yet again, I use paper 18in by 24in and make the grid squares to be 3in by 3in). Get it? This way you can sort of go square by square and match things up. Of course, I don't do that, but I do use the lines as a guide to make sure the features are proportionally accurate to life and also as a guide to shadows and continuity. Hopefully I just made some sense, otherwise you will come away from reading this with a very confused look on your face.
Crap. I also hope you aren't in one of those countries that uses the metric system. If that's the case, just substitute however it equals out. 10 cm in an inch? I think...anyway, just do whatever suits you best. The smaller the squares, the more details you can isolate and perfect.

Ooh, much better! The eyes are beautiful! See how much more life that little glint of light gave them? You did a fantastic job with the shading. I noticed you fixed up the stubble quite a bit, too. :) Great job! Keep sketching/drawing/whatever you want to call it!

Absolutely lovely! I love how you fixed his facial hair, it makes me happy haha. I also love the eyes, and it looks like you edited the jacket to? Anyway just wanted to say that I love it.

I have now Idea who 30 seconds to Mars is or who Jered Leto is but I like your sketch! First I wanna say that you have a good eye for faces, one of my weaknesses when I don't have a reference. His head may be a little big but I think it's cool, it gives it style! :)

The one big thing you should work on is shading, and by that I don't just mean filling in the shaded spots better, I mean actually adding various values/shades/tones and smoothly putting them together. Otherwise a cool sketch! :)

Hey Bellamy!

Wow. Very nice. Way better than anything I could even *try* to do. XD I like the way you improved the facial hair - that's something I was going to suggest you change before I saw the edited/improved version of the picture. ^^

Anyways, very awesome and nice. Your a great artist =D
