Let us now acknowledge
the truth – between the two of us,
you’ve been laughing at me all along
haven’t you?
Oh don’t deny it
just to spare my feelings.
I’m intelligent enough to know
when I’ve been made a fool.
Here I am
wearing my heart on my sleeve
thinking I’m so clever
so superior to you -
and there you are
hiding in plain sight
beneath a shallow mask of lipstick
and toothy smiles;
a smokescreen that it would take
so little effort to penetrate.
But arrogant as I am, I believed
I could see all of you; that
there were no hidden depths
no undiscovered veins of
intellectual gold
beneath your made-up skin
and your skimpy clothes.
I took you at face value
and I apologize.

I always did
overlook
the obvious.

Got a poem or short story you want me to critique?

There is only one success: to be able to spend your life in your own way, and not to give others absurd maddening claims upon it. (C D Morley)

Yeah this is good. The layout could have easily distorted it too much, but it didn't, it kind of enforced it. I like it.
Oh the trees!
Take me back to London please!!!

I loved the imagery and, all in all, this is a really great poem. it held my attention from beginning to end, the ending, itself, was definitely worthy of the entire poem, and it flowed perfectly. i don't really have any suggestions here, sorry. i loved the way you wrote it - all as one, except for those last three lines.
this part was very well written:

beneath a shallow mask of lipstick
and toothy smiles;
a smokescreen that it would take
so little effort to penetrate.
But arrogant as I am, I believed
I could see all of you; that
there were no hidden depths
no undiscovered veins of
pure, intellectual gold
beneath your made-up skin
and your skimpy clothes.

personally, it reminds me of how i used to write. except better =] great
