Beatrix Potter drawings.

Obviously all credit goes to Beatrix Potter for coming up with the original ideas and drawings. I'm just copying them for my art homework.



Done with watercolour pencils.



Just a pencil.

(I know they're badly cut out on the computer! There are words around them, which don't need to be seen, so I just have the drawings. Hence the odd colour of the paper - It looks fine in reality. )

Any help would be appreciated.

Ooh, AquaMarine, these are fabulous!

1. For the bird, I can only think of two little things you could do to improve. Maybe erase the little wisps of pencil markings around the bird -- the feet, particularly. Also, outlining the picture in black Sharpie might make it pop out a little bit more.

2. Good job here, but I'm not sure about how the shape of the shoulders. The rabbit's left shoulder sort of slopes downward. It would be great if you posted the original Beatrix Potter drawings, as well, so that we can compare. I mean, I wouldn't want to say the shoulders slope too much if Beatrix Potter's rabbit's shoulders slope, too.

Hey there, Amy. Consider yourself the fortunate victim of my first Art and Photography review in a while. :P

One thing I notice in common between the two is how the outlines are so heavy yet sketchy-looking. Part of the reason is because you've put so much pressure on the pencil drawing some lines that you couldn't erase them completely. Another is that it looks like you didn't draw some lines in one stroke, instead using smaller strokes connected together. Both of these result in messy lines.

I suggest that next time you draw something, don't put as much pressure on the pencil. Instead, sketch the general shapes as lightly as possible (like an oval for the rabbit's head and ears, or a circle for the bird's body). You'll be erasing most of these lines later, but they'll help you get a better feel for what you're drawing, and you'll be able to correct mistakes in shape easily without leaving messy, non-erasable lines in the finished picture.

Also, when you're drawing the outlines, try to use as few strokes as possible. A single, sure line looks much better than several strokes joined together. Don't be afraid to move the paper around so that lines are easier to draw.

Lastly, the color of the paper can be fixed by using a program like Photoshop (or GIMP, which is free) and adjusting the Levels. There's various excellent tutorials around the internet for whatever program you use which will help you get your scanned/photographed drawings looking crisp and clean rather than dirty.

Amizzle! Great work! Both have an amateurish look to them, but I wouldn't want it any other way, since it would then look like Beatrix's work, and not yours. Gah, sorry if that sounded like an insult.
I'm not very familiar with the bird, although I recognized Mrs. Cotton-tail. You managed to get the streaking to represent feathers on bird, and the red was very good (robin?), however, I wonder if Mrs. Cotton-tail could've used some color too.
By the way, How large are these pictures? And did you draw them as complementary illustrations to an essay or article?

Good drawings....
In the 1st picture the pencil marks should be erased and if the beak is shifted to a slightly lower position then it would look better....

In the 2nd one the face structure of the rabbit looks a bit disfigured and again in this the pencil marks should be erased...
But all in all it was a good one....
