Accents

NZ accent - usually. It's hideous. 'Seven' = 'Seevin,' 'Bed' = 'Beed,' 'Red' = 'Reed'.

However, I talk in a mixture of the British/American/Indian accent at home so that my lovely Indian parents can understand me.

Was born in England, so that accent comes flooding back very easily.

And being pentalingual helps - means I have an ear for accents and pronunciation and can change at will. Very quickly, too.

Minnesota Accent:

The only thing that really comes to mind for me is how a lot of us pronounce T's that are in the middle of the world (after a vowel) as D's. So instead of saying "wa-ter" we say "wa-der".

I have an American South African accent. I watched a lot of American TV when I was younger (Cartoonnetwork).

There is no definite South African accent. There's basically the blacker one and whiter one and Afrikanerer one, no racism intended. I have more of a white-ish South African American accent.

When I first came to the school I'm in at the moment I was teased for saying fast (as in man instead of like far car). I changed a bit but it's still deep inside. I use my South African accent when I'm complaining, American when I making a speech and a mix in general. But I play with all accents, literally. It's a habit in the school to mock/mimick other accents. Especially the black one when speaking very posh.

Here are a few caracitures of the accent, sometimes overexxagerated sometimes not.
How to speak like a black South Arican:
Roll your R's.
Not 'yes'. Yeeeees! Long vowels.
Some of us have strong, elegant English accents because of Apartheid (e.g Nelson Mandela)

How to speak like a White South African:
Say, 'hey', at the end of every statement. YWS is quite awesome, hey?
*All South African Accents* Except in words like man, your a's are long. We don't say 'Yeah'. We say 'Ya' and spell it Ja (Afrikaans).
Your vowels, as mentioned above, or over-emphasized, but not lengthened. e.g finish your O's like you start your Y's.

Speaking like a BOER! (Afrikaner):
To be a hardcore boer you have to mix up your tenses. I Are Busy. (Only a few people do that, though)
Your voice has to be loud and strong.
Roll your R's.
Mix up words between English and Afrikaans.
Afrikaans is a very strong language (It's like German or Dutch. Ggggggggg!) let it slip into your English.
Learn Afrikaans.

Finally, the famous Coloured accent:
Mix up Afrikaans and English in a sleazy fashion.
Slang. Slang like there's no tomorrow.
Part Indian. Part Afrikaans. Part Black.
You should have a good knowledge of a black language (Xhosa/Sotho etc.) and Afrikaans.
Be intimidating.

So yeah, Stella Thomas, I can NOT imagine you with a South African accent

I have a kind of weird accent. Where I'm from there are maybe 3 main accents. The 'Stereotypical' one that makes us sound slightly disabled. The normal one. And the Invicargill one. There are heaps more but those stand out most to me.
I'm sort of a cross between Nz Invicargill, Nz Normal, British, and American. (I watch too much t.v.) So I sound really wierd to most of my friends. And my british friend's mom says I sound american O.O

Things you might say with a Sheffield accent:

Eyoop = hello
T'ut = to the
reight = right
didn't = dint
with = wi'
tha/thee = you
Calling everyone love or duck
I'm standin' 'ere like souse waiting for't vinegar! = I don't even know what this means. xD My nana used to say this when she was trying to get someone to hurry up.

It annoys me when people think that British accents are all really posh because they're really not. But it's kinda dying out. My accent isn't anything near like that; it's way more bland and normal (at least to my ears)
