Can someone tell me what the heck Monochrome is?

I've been searching the web all night and I searched the words 'black, white, gray' on google and there were like thousands of fan fiction links from different animes, books, and TV shows so I got curious. I added Kingdom Hearts (my fav. video game) and clicked search again and find all these links to different fan fiction stories.I clicked one of them and read the whole incomplete story and read some others I had found and got curious.

What the heck is Monochrome and why does is keep showing up in fan fiction?

I thought it was a book or a movie so I wanted to see or read it to find out how the real story is so I look up Monochrome in google and all I got were definitions and junk like that. Out of the seven fan fiction I've read that contains Monochrome, they all revolve around a school that is separated by the Blacks and Whites, two enemy groups, when this new girl shows up and proclaims herself as the Gray Leader since she think the whole entire idea is stupid. Then she called war on the Blacks and Whites and if she had gathered 200 Grays before the seniors graduate, the would give up the Monochrome method.

The farthest I've read about it that I think is a true part of the story is that the one who started the method was the Black leader after his girlfriend for three days misunderstood something when she saw him with a girl he had dated and broke up. The Black leader was angry and blamed the girl he was with for there break up and she became the White Leader. The Black Leader approaches the former girlfriend and asks him to choose a side. She didn't want to be a part of it and proclaimed herself as the Gray leader and led the students who didn't want to be a part of the feud.

What is Monochrome? Why is it in fan fiction so much? Is it a novel, a movie?

From a quick googling of "monochrome + fanfiction + Kingdom Hearts" I got linked to Monochrome, which I assume is one of those fics you've read. At the very least, the plot seems to be exactly the same as to those, from what I've gathered skimming through the first two chapters.

Monochrome is based in Penguin Brothers.

A quick trip to my dear old friend Wikipedia for "Penguin Brothers" yielded this, which, to quote, has:

The story follows tomboy Hina on her mission to liberate her high school from its two dictators. These two leaders have split the student population into two opposing groups: Isshiki's followers wear a white uniform; Nishizaki's wear a black uniform. With the help of non-uniform wearer (a.k.a. Grey) Koshiba she sets out to overturn the whole school.

Mystery solved?

Wikipedia describes monochrome as:

Monochrome[1] describes paintings, drawings, design, or photographs in one color or shades of one color.[2] A monochromatic object or image has colors in shades of limited colors or hues.

and

For an image, the term monochrome is usually taken to mean the same as black-and-white or, more likely, grayscale, but may also be used to refer to other combinations containing only tones of a single color, such as green-and-white or green-and-black.

So I'd assume that in the sense of this particular story, monochrome refers to the division between black and white. One is either black or white in the story, nothing else until grey comes in and tries to break up the monochrome with an additional color.
