Scarlett had met Gianni Grayson at one of her modeling shoots. It was for Roxy or maybe Billabong, but the point was that Scarlett and four other girls had to wear bikinis. Skimpy and small string bikinis. Scarlett wore hot pink, and the other girls wore blue, orange, yellow, and green. The five girls were taking pictures on the beach when a few guys came to surf. They weren’t originally supposed to be part of the shoot, and the photographer almost asked them to leave, but then Roxy (or was it Billabong?) had decided they looked cute with a few of the bikini-clad girls. Since there were only three guys, two girls were booted from the photo shoot, but Scarlett got to stay. The three guys were Gianni Grayson, Cade Marx, and Phillip Hodge. Phillip was put with the shortest girl, Tabitha, Gianni with the dark-haired girl Samantha, and Cade with Scarlett. During the whole shoot, they had to act like a group of love struck teenagers. Despite being placed with other people, Gianni and Scarlett were head over heels for each other. They’d gone out ever since.
Gianni was handsome and looked a lot older than eighteen. With his rumpled dark black hair and flinty hazel-green eyes, he was good-looking. His face was chiseled and focused and he was tall, at least six-foot three. Gianni was muscular and well-built as well as thin. Scarlett fell harder for him than she had for her eighth grade crush, Patrick Clay, who she’d had her first kiss with and proceeded to date for a year and a half. She’d broken Patrick’s heart when he found her kissing Bennett Henson after his baseball game. Gianni was also serious, sarcastic, and sultry, which Scarlett Skye Bruins thought was the best combination. Joslyn drove to his house with Scarlett in the passenger seat, neither of them speaking except for Scarlett to whisper, “Can we get a Starbucks?” By the time they reached Gianni’s apartment, Scarlett had slurped down her Java Chip Frappuccino and Joslyn had gotten halfway through her White Peppermint Mocha. Scarlett rushed out of the car, slamming the door shut with a thud behind her. Joslyn shut off the car, pulled her keys out of the ignition, and slid out of the car, tugging her camera bag out behind her. She followed Scarlett to Gianni’s apartment, having to sprint because Scarlett was going so fast. When they got there, Scarlett knocked on Gianni’s door with her knuckles. Seconds passed before he came to the door, wearing workout shorts and no shirt, looking sweaty and gross. Scarlett hardly seemed to care, because she jumped into his arms and kissed him on the lips. Joslyn glanced away, as if she was invading their privacy. Gianni and Scarlett stopped kissing and Gianni looked at Scar questioningly.
“What are you doing here?” Gianni asked, flexing his rock hard biceps. Scarlett beamed at him and Gianni smiled right back. Joss held back the urge to roll her eyes. Gianni was sweet to Scarlett, but she had the nagging suspicion that he wasn’t as perfect as he seemed. For one, he hated surprises, and two, he always went over to Scarlett Skye’s house. Joss couldn’t help but think that he had another girlfriend, though she’d never tell Scar that. Scarlett would pitch a fit, not speak to Joss for a week, demand an apology to her and Gianni, then if Joss was around the couple Scarlett would tease her about it and kiss Gianni more than usual just to show they were a happy couple. Gianni flashed Joslyn the same smile, only Joss chose to give him a scowl instead of a grin like Scarlett. Gianni’s lips formed into a thin line.
“I wanted to visit you, Gi,” Scarlett giggled and reached up to give his freshly shave cheek a kiss. Gianni looked uncomfortable at this statement, and then he returned the kiss. Joslyn was sure that she was the only one who noticed how stiff he was acting, how unsure he seemed, and how he looked like he wanted nothing more than for Scarlett to leave. Joslyn pointedly tapped at her watch, giving Scarlett a grimace and a frown.
“That was sweet, Scarlett, really. Why don’t we double with Joss tonight,” he suggested staring at Joslyn with a smirk playing across his lips. “Unless she doesn’t have a boyfriend.” The stupid look on Gianni’s face should have been slapped off, but Joss just stood there glaring at him. She stood there for a second letting her blood boil, meanwhile, Scarlett was oblivious. “We can head out to eat at that new place in Malibu and spend the night at my dad’s beach house,” he gazed at Scarlett, who giggled again in that same girlish tone, “It’ll be fun. Of course if Joss can score a date.” Joss laughed airily and shot Gianni a flirtatious look.
“Oh that’s alright Gianni; I’d rather stay home and work out all the time like you do. I mean those abs,” Joss said giving his chest a wayward glance, “must take at least ninety hours a week. Not to mention those biceps. Jeez, that must take at least one-hundred-and-sixty hours. Is that all you do, sit around a work out? Gianni frowned. “I’m just joking, Gi,” Joslyn said, poking his shoulder, hard, with her fingernail, “I’m coming if only to protect Scar from your stupid jokes and jaunty comments.”
“We’d better go,” Scarlett said, giving Gianni a quick kiss, looking more embarrassed than him. “Pick us up at my place at seven?” Gianni nodded, still appearing surly. “Come on, Joss; let’s go get you a date.” Gianni snorted, but Joss whipped around and looked hard at him, until he fixed his amused expression. Scarlett pulled her arm and they walked to the Jeep. “Let’s go to Thayer’s house.”
