Avalon. Snob city. What makes them think they’re better than us?

Actually, I wouldn’t have such a problem with them if they weren’t planning to kill the rest of us with that bomb they’re developing…

A short summary:

The year is 2037. The world’s population has been cut by more than half, and more than three-fourths of the remaining people alive are infected with Silici, an extremely infectious airborne disease. People wear special gasmasks anytime they aren’t at home, to stay safe from the virus. But even the gasmasks aren’t a 100% guarantee against the disease.

The only place free from the Silici virus is Avalon, a dome-covered city in the middle of China. It was built shortly after the World Health Organization declared Silici an epidemic. Avalon is, however, extremely exclusive. It is ruled by aristocrats who oversee everything. Shortly before it was finished, invitation letters were sent out the world’s brightest men and women. Only those who got an invitation and survived the screening for Silici managed to get into the haven.

It wasn't a problem then, but now some of Avalon's aristocrats are planning to nuke the rest of the world in an attempt to cleanse the Earth of the Silici virus.

What is Silici?

Silici is a disease that grants the infected person superhuman strength, speed and senses. However, it’s not all fun and games. Those infected with it often suffer from wounds which suddenly appear on their body, sudden vomiting, violent headaches and dizziness. They don’t survive the virus for more than three years – often it’s around two. Only the best immune systems hold out for three years. During the final year of their sickness, the infected person’s brain starts to corrode and he slowly goes insane.

Silici-infected people are marked by their red-rimmed eyes and, more noticeably, by the fact that the color of their iris has bled out into the whites of their eyes.

Wow. Creepy. How about Avalon?

Avalon is, as mentioned before, the only Silici-free place in the entire world. It is self-sufficient and has small bases in other countries, where it farms a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Its security is airtight and in order to get in, you must apply. No one has gotten in through application yet, though. It’s a city of genii, of the greatest humans of the current generation. Avalon is the only place in the world where food prices aren’t insane, the air is fresh, research and development is going along smoothly and people don’t have to wear gasmasks.

Avalon, however, is not an entirely safe place either. Due to security reasons, its landscape is always changing. If you are a resident, you will be notified of the changes and when they will occur. Examples of changes include a river drowning a street, buildings appearing on empty lots, skyscrapers vanishing underground and roads becoming dead-ends. It’s deadly if you don’t remember the changes that are due to happen.

Okay. Great. But there’s no conflict. Just a world.

Actually, the aristocrats of Avalon are torn. Half of them wants to nuke the rest of the world with a biobomb they’re developing (credit for the idea of a biobomb goes to Eoin Colfer). The others are encouraging the research of a cure for the Silici virus, as well as an immunization for it. Rumors of the biobomb have spread outside Avalon thanks to the conscience of a few of its residents, and some Silicians aren’t too happy about it. They’ve been wanting to infiltrate the snobbish city for quite a while, and this is the perfect reason to do so.

However, it’s not that easy. To get inside Avalon, one needs to pass a DNA identification test, after which you will be scanned for the Silici virus. If you do have it, you will be zapped and aged three years, and therefore die on the spot.

That’s fun for the Silicians, but what if I want to be a resident of Avalon?

Avalon’s residents are highly discouraged from leaving, but they can’t really help it. Someone’s got to take care of their loved ones’ graves, and sometimes, you’ll miss natural sunshine and weather (Avalon’s climate is randomized, but artificial). You’ll probably go insane if you stay in the perfect bubble of Avalon. You will leave from time to time, despite the risks involved, unless you want to go brain dead (And that’s a shame, since you need to be a genius/extremely sports-oriented to stay inside Avalon).

It also cannot be helped that some people are envious of you for being in Avalon, and since the residents of Avalon are known throughout the world, you will attract attacks if you don’t wear an old-fashioned gasmask. (Even then you’re likely to get attacked – Avalon’s ultra-sweet air clings to you like a perfume.) For this reason, Avalon's residents often bring a weapon or two when they leave the city's safety.

What’s the world outside Avalon like?

Aside from everyone wearing gasmasks, insane food prices (unless you want to risk eating contaminated food and getting Silici) and rabid animals, it’s life as usual outside Avalon. Some normals outside Avalon don’t even believe the rumors about the biobomb. Most of the world’s scientists are dedicated to finding a cure for Silici (but are not succeeding, as the brightest are in Avalon - so only Avalon is actually progressing in the search for a cure), so technology isn’t so advanced.

~~~~~
Now that the setting and conflict’s over with, let’s get down to the rules of the SB, and the profiles, of course.
Rules on character creation:
1.) You cannot play an already infected genius unless you have my explicit permission. PM me to discuss details.
2.) You cannot play a genius in Avalon who is infected. No Silicians exist inside Avalon. You can, however, play a genius who sympathizes with Silicians and later gets infected.
3.) Residents of Avalon may have access to more advanced weaponry, but this doesn’t mean they’re automatically drop-dead awesome at using these weapons.
4.) Your character must be above 20, unless you have a very compelling and well-rounded teenage character in mind. In order to play a teenage/preteen character, you must PM me your profile and I’ll decide on it.
5.) All infected people suffer from sudden coughing fits, extreme vomiting, dizziness, wounds appearing on their body and violent migraines. No such thing as someone immune to this. On a related note, no one is immune to the Silici virus.
General SB rules:
1.) No godmodding.
2.) No killing off characters unless permission is given.
3.) Posts must be at least 200 words. No less.
4.) Please, please, have something meaningful happen in your post.
5.) Please put some thought into your character profile. Make it as complete and clear as possible. Have strengths, weaknesses and good as well as bad characteristics.
6.) Include proper spacing and grammar in your posts.
7.) Proper continuity must be observed. Posts breaking the continuity can and will be ignored.
8.) I reserve the right to reject profiles. ScarlettFire and Lumierre are helping me mod this, so if you get a message from either of them please pay attention.
9.) Posts that don't follow the rules will also be ignored.
10.) If you want to be brought in, say so in the DT. This thread is reserved for actual in-character posts only.
IMPORTANT:
If you're having a hard time writing a post that complies with all the rules, PM me and I will co-write/help you write a post. Don't be afraid to PM me. I don't bite. Honest. ;)
Hey Kara. Yes, I am moding this SB.
Anyways. Profile. (currently editing)
Name: Danielle Ashford.
Age: 21.
Appearance (written description): Dani is athletice and tall-ish, around 5'4, with shoulder length, light brown hair and chocolate brown eyes. Always seen with a pencil and a sketch pad or camera and wearing jeans and a dark red, long sleeved top.
Picture (optional - do NOT use emo kid pictures or anime ones):
Spoiler
Image
Job: Danielle is an Artist and doesn't really have a job, but she often sells her best paintings and sketches to the other Genii in Avalon. They do love pretty things...
Residence and Physical State: Avalon resident, normal but will become infected when she leaves the city.
Personality – Strengths: Danielle is strong willed, artistic, smart and determined. She's often distant thoguh, since she's often in her studio working on her latest piece of art. When she is focused, she's very single-minded and often watches those around her like a hawk, looking for the next thing that inspires her. She often leaves the safety of the city to find 'inspiration' in the landscape outside.
Personality – Weaknesses: Dani is not a fighter and can sometimes be too focused on her artworks. She tends to be distant and often ignores you when you're speaking to her. Although she is smart, it's all creative and she's no good at all at scientific stuff, Avalon politics and doesn't know much about the outside world and can sometimes not notice important things. She also doesn't relaise how bad the virus actually is until you get it-she's kind of naive and ill-informed in that respect.
Sympathies: Pro research for the cure. She knows about the bio-bomb and doesn't like the idea of killing off a lot of people just because they're sick.
Miscellaneous skills (Again, no genii with perfect aim when it comes to guns): Danielle loves drawing and painting and knows how to use ancient weapons, such as swords and the like, but she'll never be able to find one. Unfortunately, her only survival skills are "Remeber your pocket knife" which isn't very helpful at all. She's hopeless at anything other than art.
History: Danielle was born outside the city, and when she turned 7, she was accepted into the city and grew up in Avalon. She has only been outside the dome a couple of times since first entering the dome, escaping the virus so far. She grew up in the city, watching how it changed from a day to day basis. Forever obsessed with the outside world, Danielle loves to go exploring...until she's chased off by some of the people outside the city. It seems they don't like and Genii from Avalon...
She had a pretty normal childhood, except for the fact that both her parents are now dead, victims of Salici, and she now lives with an Aunt. Recently, Danielle has expressed a dangerous obsession with gonig outside the walls and risking infection. She has no other family and a fiance (Michael O'Hanley) she highly dislikes, whose parents are part of the Aristocat Council and want to bomb the rest of the world.
Sick of all the Genii stupidity and the artifial climate of Avalon, Danielle wishes to leave the city, but this will not be the best idea she's ever had.
Other: Danielle has a Fiance, Michael O'Hanley. (this spot is free to claim) Michael is highly annoying.
Name: David Savage
Age: 24
Appearance: 6'0"; slender and muscle-toned. His head is shagged in a mop of charcoal black hair that stops just under his ears. His eyes are black as night and his facial features are tied together by a permanent 5pm shadow. Out of habit, he wears only camouflage pants and black, form-fitting t-shirts. He believes, after all, that the key to survival is routine. No surprises, no accidents.
Job: He works in a partnership with his best friend, Mark, building security fences, installing barriers, and on occasions growing in frequency, building fences topped with razor wire and broken glass. The money isn't great; the working conditions are horrible and risky, but he works his fingers to the bone to meet the outrageous prices of food and water.
Residence and Physical State: He is an outside citizen of the world, living among the Silicians uninfected. He is housed with his fiance, Natalie (whom he calls his wife; their wedding was interrupted by a coughing/vomiting fit of the priest, who died on the way to the hospital) on the coast of northern California. As the world's state of being continued to deteriorate, David realized that it may be the time for drastic action. And he has shallow dreams of making it to Avalon to save his 'wife' and any family he may ever have.
Personality – Strengths: He is strong-willed and determined to survive in the bleak world around him. More so, he swore to the God that he half-believes in that he would protect his 'wife' until his dying breath. Given that, he makes it his obligation to keep Natalie healthy and happy, no matter what happens.
Personality – Weaknesses: David, though strong-willed and forcefully optimistic, is blinded to the horrific reality of the crisis of the world. He understands the direct effects--people are sick, dying, and survival is tough these days-- but he lacks the understanding that the world may very well (and probably will) end for him and his darling Natalie.
Sympathies: David has yet to hear word of the Bio-Bomb or any of the cruel ploys of the Avalonians. He only understands that the situation is bleak and that there must be a cure somewhere. As such, he believes that with the right connections, he can obtain the cure and save his family of two.
Miscellaneous skills: He understands the concepts of entry-level chemistry and biology and therefore eases the strain of survival by practical water-purifying and food-cleansing practices. Given a bit of engineering genius, he rigged what he dubbed the Savage Mask with 12 layers of filtration to purify the air he and Natalie and Mark breathe. He carries around a pocket knife and knows his way around a gun, though he has yet to find one.
History: David was born in a tiny rural town just east of where he lives now in California. His parents were poor and his father was a wild game hunter who taught him how to hunt and fish and survive in the wild.
David never took him seriously until dear old dad contracted 'the plague'. When David sat at his dad's hospital bed and watched the color of his eyes bleed into the rest of him, he caught an idea of how swiftly the world would go to hell. But David shrugged it off and focused on the important things in life: Natalie and money.
David met Natalie at a military ball that his current girlfriend was invited to. So David dressed up in his nicest tux and went to the ball just to be arm-candy-with-a-six-pack for his girl. But man, when he laid eyes on Natalie, he just knew. He just knew something was right. Little did he know, Natalie felt the same. The two met at the free bar in the back of the ballroom and spent the night talking about the viral war and how they both hated formal events. They swapped stories until the gin in their blood started to talk for them, and then they got to know each other more closely in the military barracks behind the ballroom.
And David never was alone again.
After a year, David proposed to her. After a half-second of thinking, she said yes.
In the winter of that year, their wedding day arrived. And just when the priest began to certify the marriage, he vomited blood between David's feet.
David and Natalie never tried to get married again; they said they didn't need a ceremony to confer what they already knew. The world was on fire and so were their hearts. And that was good enough for post-apocalyptic couple David and Natalie.
Other: Two profile spots open along with David's...
Name: Cameron McKnight
Age: 26
Appearance (written description): Dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. He tends to keep his hair slicked back with hair jell. He’s clean shaven and almost seems incapable of growing facial hair. He has glasses that he wears from time to time.
Picture (optional - do NOT use emo kid pictures or anime ones):
Spoiler
Image
Job: He is a school teacher. He teaches music and history.
Residence and Physical State: Avalon resident. Lives in his old family home with three others.
Personality – Strengths: Cameron is a very bright individual that takes his work seriously. He believes strongly in hard work and pushes people his life to make the best out of themselves believing that everyone has the potential for greatness. He likes to learn what best motivates a person and apply it to them. He’s a hopeless romantic that believes that there is only one person in the world for everyone and he knows he has found his and will do anything for her. He is friendly to everyone he meets and never raises his voice. He likes to enter stressful situations in a calm manor and believes that showing anger is a quick way to showing ones ignorance.
Personality – Weaknesses: Although he’s kind and understanding to most people he is mentally condescending to people he thinks don’t work hard enough and he has no tolerance for the infected or those who show too much sympathy for them. Although mainly practical in his thinking when it comes to his girlfriend he can be reckless and brash in his actions. Sometimes he thinks too highly of his cleverness and will seldom admit that he is wrong even if his mistake is staring him right in the face.
Sympathies: Pro bi-bomb. He considers the infected people to be a danger to the society and thinks they should be destroyed. He mainly believes this because a large chunk of his family was taken by the disease and his sister wishes to venture outside of Avalon.
Miscellaneous skills: He’s not much of a fighter but he knows how to use a gun. He’s smart and knows basic strategy and he also reads a lot and has picked up a few tricks.
History: Cameron grew up in the dome of Avalon and has never left and has no wish to see the outside world. His childhood was nice enough and he grew up with his younger sister named Ivy and his cousin Liam who’s Uncle had abounded him and exited Avalon for no apparent reason. When he never came back Cameron’s parents took him in.
Years later when Cameron was 19 and living on his own. His parents contracted the disease while on an outing. His cousin Liam supposedly got a letter from his father and left Avalon too. He like his father was never heard from again. Cameron’s sister came to live with him since she was only 16 when their parents left.
He now lives with his sister, his girlfriend and his sister’s boyfriend. The four of them live in Cameron and Ivy’s childhood home. Ivy wishes to travel outside of Avalon but Cameron refuses to let her go. Cameron and his girlfriend are talking marriage. They don’t wish to be engage for too long and want to skip right to the wedding.
Appearance (written description): Short messed up hair with small moustache, often wears glasses, had striking intelligent eyes with a beautiful sympathy in them.
Picture (optional - do NOT use emo kid pictures or anime ones):
Image
Job: War Hero/Veteran
Residence and Physical State: Avalon Resident
Personality – Strengths: Archibald is from the breed that brought soldiers, he’s Veteran through and through, has excellent mind for tactics and understands the fundamentals of most weapons. He’s brash and has a very cut and clean morality system. For instance he seen too much death in his life and doesn’t want to see anymore.
Personality – Weaknesses: Being from the army all his life, he tends to not think too hard about things. And as he’s a Veteran of the nation he has that wish to be once more be a hero. He has no experience with computers and calls them ‘Infernal Devices’.
Sympathies: Archibald has seen too much death, too much pain, he is repulsed by the proposed Genocide of the infected, he knows this isn’t for best, it’s out of hatred a sorta racism. This old war horse supports finding a cure.
Miscellaneous skills (Again, no genii with perfect aim when it comes to guns): Superb mind for tactics.
History: This Veteran has seen it all called out to front when the whole thing broke out he was forced to kill his own friends in defence, orders were orders and as a soldier he had to obey. The blood on his hands is unspeakable and he refuses to attack anyone whom he sees humanity in. He had a family but they were killed after one of the governments bombed Montana, he was on leave and found out only days later. He’s taken to drinking, but remains stringent on it, wanting to keep fit.
War has aged Archibald, he’s no one left, and has no one left he wants to fight for, his one mission is to topple regime in Avalon to allow everyone in non-infected make it a haven not a prison.
Other: No one left, he’s the last warrior on the field surrounded by dead comrades.
Name: Clark Wright
Age: 24
Appearance (written description): Clark is tall and lean, he isn't one to pack on muscle and is more of an agile and quick man when hunting. He doesn't see the point to it, no matter how hard you try the infected will be stronger, after all. He is bald by choice, with brown eyes, he usually has a pretty neutral expression, except during the hunting, he gets really into it. When he bringing them on he is usually laughing like mad.
Picture (optional - do NOT use emo kid pictures or anime ones):
Spoiler
Image
Job: Clark is a hunter. He and his best friend are co-leaders for it, because both of them are polar opposites when it comes to how to capture.
Residence and Physical State: He is a citizen on Avalon, his immune system is in top shape, as the researchers make sure their hunters are as healthy as possible, just in case.
Personality – Strengths: Clark is fast and quick. with a quick mind and a calm determiner. he has the ability to just laugh at the troubles he has outside and so he stays calm almost always. He has seen a lot as a hunter, and so not a lot freaks him out at this point. His mind works fast and he usually can give a good start to a plan, but the mind sprint doesn't let him finish most of them.
Personality – Weaknesses: Clark is pretty weak when it comes to muscle, His calm personality can be very dangerous, because he never thinks of anything as much of a threat and so under diagnoses it. His mind is quick to the point where he gets through it, can;t finish it, and then it is riddled with errors, but just sounds right. His partner, who is slow and freaked out, always fixes his errors and makes sure he knows what he is doing. The two are like halves of a whole, and Clark would die without someone like him to fix his errors before he makes the mistake.
Sympathies: Clark tends not to think about this sort of stuff. He knows his job is to find the infected and bring them in. He doesn't think of why he brings them in, or of them as people. You could call him detached from them, and humanity.
Miscellaneous skills: He can kill you pretty easy. Trust me.
History: Clark's father was a military genius and was granted entry into the dome, his mother, who was/is a musical genius met him soon after they entered the dome. Clark's father raised him like a General who used to teach kindergarten, strict and hard, with just a bit of leeway to let him takes breaks. When he was seventeen his dead got him a job as an apprentice hunter, which meant he was basically the kid who cleaned their stuff for them.
During the time as the apprentice he learned a lot about weapons while cleaning them, and by the time they gave him the actually job as a hunter, at age twenty, he was a virtual expert at most of their weapons, though on theoretical. In reality he was decent. During his early times he befriended another Hunter, James Bell, and the two became an unstoppable hunting duo.
Name: Natalie Saxon-Savage
Age: 25
Appearance (written description): Natalie's small- about 5'3, and has taken to wearing heels whenever possible to hide this fact. Small boned and featured, Natalie's got dark brown wavy hair that she regularly chops the ends off whenever they get past her shoulders, and bright green eyes.
Job: Natalie works part-time as a nurse in the Silician hospice. Her fiancé/husband (she's never quite decided which to call him), David, despairs of this, telling her it's not safe. She wears his own custom-built gas-mask though, and so few other people are willing to help that she feels a duty to. The pay isn't great, but at least it's something.
Residence and Physical State: An outside citizen living in Northern California, Natalie is unaffected so far thanks to David's gas mask (but she runs higher risks than everyone else of contracting the disease at the same time).
Personality – Strengths: Beneath a supposedly tough exterior, Natalie is unswervingly kind and caring, she'll help almost anyone (whether this is a strength or not in the world she's living in is debatable), even if she runs a personal risk in doing so. She's smart enough- no Avalon genius, she figures, but she's got a head on her shoulders, and loves David deeply. She can't imagine what she would do if he wasn't there for her at the end of the day- but they seem to have a different view of the world around them.
Personality – Weaknesses: Natalie can be stubborn and headstrong, she hates to admit she's wrong and will never back down from an argument- she won't start a fight but once she's in one, she's in it to win it. She is easily-trusting, which some people (namely David) see as a threat to her safety, but she ignores this. She hates being told what to do and in general won't listen to people who order her around.
Sympathies: Natalie hopes that a cure can be found for Silici, she's seen it do awful things to people- including her own parents. She's heard rumours of atrocities being planned to kill off the disease but refuses to believe them and doesn't spread them herself- how could someone even think of something like that?
Miscellaneous skills: Like David, she's got a good grounding in science, particularly that of biology which she's read up on very thoroughly. She's skilled as a nurse and knows how to deal with people with Silici- which often includes placing a well-aimed strong tranquiliser dart too (though she'd never think of using a real weapon unless absolutely and utterly necessary, and then she'd be too nervous to aim straight).
History: Both Natalie's parents and her three younger sisters died of the Silici virus- by some miracle she remained uninfected and was whisked away from her infested home by the authorities, never seeing them die or going to their funeral. She holds some residue of a dream of finding them alive, but it was nearly three years ago now and she's given up hope.
She met David at a military ball, an event she went to with a man she barely knew out of goodwill, but abandoned her date halfway through. David, however, was an interesting character and while she would have regretted some of the things she did on their first meeting if it was anyone else, he's now her fiancé/husband/mate-for-life (why not, everything else seems so primitive nowadays) and she doesn't think she could have had anyone better. He and their mutual friend Mark work hard, harder than she does, staying at home and dreaming of a house full of children and sweetly patterned cushions. Not in today's world, though. She knows she's lucky enough as it is and only prays it can stay that way.
Other: Not so far.
She has an athlete's body, and is tall for her age.
Job: So far, she hasn't managed to find one. She's maintained her childhood occupation of your friendly neighborhood thief. Not necessarily the best job, or the safest, but she's good at what she does.
Residence and Physical State: She's been infected for about a year now. She lives on the streets, and she has about two and a half years until she's gone, if she's lucky, or not bombed first.
Personality – Strengths: Bold, independent, strong hand to hand fighter, fast- she was even before being infected, stealthy, good thief. She is never going to give up on something- which can be a bad thing, but usually it just means she's going to get what she wants, when she wants it. She is known by some as the Shadow for her stealth; if she doesn't want to be seen, she won't be. She's been stealing since she was seven, so she's pretty much one of the best thieves you can find.
Personality – Weaknesses: Impatient, a little overconfident, awful with guns, blacks out randomly, the base of her neck is super sensitive, is a known criminal. Literally, if you so much as poke the base of her neck, she will fall to the ground in pain. Her aim isn't.... the best, and when the gun kicks, she'll probably drop it without thinking. She can't stand waiting for more than a minute, and she has no idea when or where she's going to just pass out. She'll underestimate her mission, or overestimate herself, or both, and try to do things she's forgotten she just can't do.
Sympathies: Very pro research. She doesn't care about "individuality" or the powers- she wants out. She has seen some patterns that might explain a few symptoms, and knows that there has to be a cure. She refuses to believe that there isn't, and is absolutely terrified that she'll be bombed before what she sees can be seen by people who can make a difference.
Miscellaneous skills: Thievery, pickpocketing, lying, resourceful. Thievery- she's been doing since she was seven. Pickpocketing was a skill she picked up about a week after that. Lying comes naturally for her, and she's quite the actress when she wants to be. As a result of being a street rat, she knows every nook, cranny, gang, and hole in the wall that there is. She can get just about anything from just about anywhere.
History: Terra has never not been on the streets. She thinks her mom died in childbirth, and her father was in Avalon while her mother was pregnant. She was taken in by a gang that happened to have a member with a soft spot. They began to teach her- how to fight, how to steal, how to lie. They showed her around the city, and the gang soon became her family. In fact, there are still some people who are scared of her because of her friendliness with them.
By the time she was seven, each and every one of them was dead.
She set off on her own, and found what they had taught her to be extremely useful. She invented several new heist plans, and became the girl to call if you needed something stolen or disposed of. She didn't just do it to survive; there was a thrill, a certain amount of improvisation involved in thievery that she couldn't live without. It was what made her the best, that love for stealing. She became well known in the criminal world as the best up-and-coming thief- and then she caught Sicili.
For a year now, she's tried to ignore it. She can still do what she's best at, but she never knows when she'll black out, or throw up, or get too dizzy to realize that she's going to walk off a rooftop. It's a nightmare, but she refuses to beg- that would wound her more than the gashes that appear on her skin.
At first, it was just a nuisance. Get back to the alley- ugh. Throw up. Be at a meeting with an employer- aw, you blacked out. But then it got worse. Be running across a rooftop- get dizzy, lose your bearings, fall off the roof. Wake up in the middle of the night- have a deep gash, shoulder to wrist. Faint from blood loss.
It's going to kill her, and she knows it.
Other: She wears this coat everywhere, often with the hood up:
Name: Elliot (Ellie) Harris
Age: 33
Appearance (written description): Nothing about Ellie’s appearance suggests anything extraordinary. Her hair is blonde, naturally highlighted – suggesting that she has recently been in a sunny climate. She is 5ft5 and is fairly slim, the result of her frequent exercise. Physically fit and clearly healthy, Ellie is the envy of those who are less healthy. Although pretty, lines around her eyes and mouth show the stress of her work as she has clearly aged quickly. But, there is a youthful light in her eyes that has not yet been extinguished and she is modestly pretty.
Picture (optional - do NOT use emo kid pictures or anime ones):
Image
Job: Ellie works outside of Avalon for an organisation that issues basic treatment for Silicians. Although Ellie was trained as a doctor and had a PhD in medicine, she does not live inside the domed city. Her job involved travelling to silicians that require basic treatment to ensure that they live as long as they can. The basic treatment consists of anti-nausea drugs, anti-histamine drugs and general hygienic practices.
Residence and Physical State: Ellie is normal and lives outside of Avalon. She is extremely careful and makes sure that she is masked where ever she goes. Ellie maintains that a simple sense of hygiene prevents the spread of the disease. She lives in the sector with the other uninfected, alone. Ellie has a couple of goldfish, but apart from that, she is a solitary person.
Personality – Strengths: Ellie is determined to help as many people as she can, as her own mother is infected. When set on a task, Ellie will see it to the end, even if the end is in the far future. Ellie is also very cynical and doesn’t believe that the genii in Avalon will even find a cure as it costs too much money. She doesn’t shy from voicing her opinion on the matter.
Personality – Weaknesses: Ellie has low-spirits, believing that it isn’t long until the situation on the planet turns catastrophic. She takes things to heart and is sensitive, then attempts to conceal her hurt with bravado. She also has a problem with trust.
Sympathies: Ellie is pro research for the cure, but doesn’t really see a cure being produced…and also believes that if a cure ends up being produced, no one will be able to afford it. The idea of the bio-bomb frightens Ellie, but understands why it may be an option.
Miscellaneous skills : Ellie is athletic in her build, so it’s no surprise that she is rather good at sport. Only, recently, she hasn’t been bothered with sport and instead, she sticks to jogging. She learnt self-defence long ago and she knows how to defend herself. However, Ellie dislikes violence but she isn’t a pacifist.
History: Ellie, as I said above, was awarded a PhD. Her skills in medicine could have earned her a place in Avalon, but she did not receive a place. It is believed that the condition of her family prevented her from receiving the invitation but it is likely that she would have declined an invitation anyway. Her father had been killed in action in the war, leaving Ellie's mother to raise her alone. When she discovered that her mother had become infected, Ellie put all her efforts in looking after her...even though her mother only has years to live.
Ellie did have a boyfriend before the epidemic, but he was granted residence in Avalon. They haven't seen each other since, but Ellie was heartbroken when her boyfriend left...she now maintains that all Avalon residents are heartless.
Dear other mods (Lume and Scar), if there's anything wrong with this profile tell me. :)
Name: Gavin Callaghan
Age: 34
Appearance: Gavin has blond hair which he always keeps neatly away from his face. Often wears suits and tuxes and is very fastidious about his appearance. He doesn't want to appear ruffled in any way and goes out of his way to look as chipper and fresh as could possibly be. He stands tall and straight-backed, and when he strides into a room everyone turns to look. He owns a powerful presence and talks with an intimidating confidence ringing loud and clear in his voice. He's not too handsome, but his charisma more than makes up for that.
Picture:
Spoiler
Job: Aristocrat of Avalon/President of Callaghan Incorporated, which is the company which most people buy gasmasks and other filters from
Residence and Physical State: Avalon Resident/Aristocrat
Personality – Strengths:
Gavin is decisive and quick. He doesn't second guess himself and is confident about his decisions. He's willing to sacrifice for the sake of his goals. Gavin isn't afraid to ask the questions needed to be asked and is calculating when the situation demands it. He doesn't back down from anything and rises to the occasion. He pushes others to be their best. Gavin is also brilliant, and he can easily predict the consequences of a certain action. He knows just what to say in order to be diplomatic, making awkward questions seem harmless and innocent. Has a way with words and people.
With true friends Gavin is loyal, helping them out financially whenever they need it. He tries his best to keep them happy by providing him with the best things money can buy and is often affectionate with them in an attempt to make up for hardly ever being there. He's busy all the time and doesn't really have time for friends and family, see.
Personality – Weaknesses:
Gavin is somewhat reckless and rash. He's not exactly the paragon of patience. He's also far too fastidious and he cannot stand anything that isn't perfect. Everything must be in order, or else he won't move on. This is odd, considering his unwillingness to wait, but he maintains that a plan should only be executed when all the details have fallen into place. He wants direct results, though, and can't really grasp the use of long-term plans. Whenever he wants something he wants to see the results at once, and this often has him putting himself in danger just to get immediate results.
Gavin can also become quite cold and manipulative. He sees the world in black and white and that the end justifies the means. He may adore his friends and family, but he is cruel to acquaintances in subtle ways. Sometimes he sends them on snipe hunts, or on missions he knows they'll die in. Of course, he feels guilty about these, but he shakes them off and justifies it as sacrifices for the better good of Avalon. On a related note, Gavin has little friends and plenty of acquaintances.
He is safest in Avalon, where his recklessness doesn't harm him much. Outside, he is always closely watched by trusty right-hand man, so he wouldn't hurt himself or accidentally get infected.
Sympathies: Gavin is the one who started the biobomb movement. Of course he's pro-bombing the rest of the world. He feels bad for everyone out there, especially for the normals (Gavin actually wanted all normals to come into Avalon, but was vetoed by the rest of the aristocrats), but he believes that at the rate the world is destroying itself, there is no other choice left. He believes the cure is too costly and would take too long to fix the world.
Miscellaneous skills: Gavin is excellent when it comes to predicting the opponent's next move (as well as stock market prices). He's quick with a pistol but can't handle anything bigger other than that. He can throw a punch or two and can take quite a hit if he's expecting it. Endurance is good and he can handle prolonged physical strain. He also knows how each and every weapon developed by Avalon works, but that's not to say he's competent at using them. Fails with knives and other things that require perfect aim.
History:
Gavin was born rich and has gone and gotten the best education money could ever afford. He was raised alone by his father after his parents divorced (his mother eventually disappeared from high society and he has no idea where she is to this date). His father died when he was 24, and he succeeded his father. He did wonderfully, driving Callaghan Incorporated to greater heights than his father had ever dreamed. When rumors of an airborne virus first showed up, Gavin was quick to jump on the bandwagon and start producing masks that would filter out most impurities from the air. As a result, his wealth doubled when the Silici virus spread. Gavin spent most of his time indoors to avoid the Silici virus, venturing out only every now and then, when there was an extremely important function he had to attend.
During one of these exclusive parties, a light joke was made: they ought to pool their resources together and build a city of their own. At first it was just that - a joke that lingered on everyone's minds. Then cases of Silici abruptly rose and plans were laid out. There were fifteen of them who would provide a substantial amount of their fortunes to build a city in China, as well as have branches out in different areas of the world for farming. The city was a quarter done when WHO declared Silici an epidemic. Invitation letters were sent out. By the time Avalon was finished, Gavin was whisked away to it as one of the prioritized people.
Gavin has contributed to Avalon in that he's the guy who came up with its changing landscape. He's not the one who built it, per se, but he laid out the general plans and gave the ideas on how it would work. He is one of Avalon's nine aristocrats (six didn't survive the time it took to build Avalon and so their entire fortunes were instead spent on it, lessening the impact to the surviving nine's fortunes) and is in charge of Avalon's weapons development center. As a result, he knows all the weapons that were developed by Avalon and how they were. (Whether he's competent at using them is a different matter entirely).
Other: Nine spots are open along with Gavin's - the eight aristocrats and his right hand man.
David Savage | Chaldea Street | 3:00PM
The midday heat hammered at the charred roof. Streams of sweat heaved off the shoulders of the faceless David Savage as his left arm ushered a hammer into the gut of a slab of hot tin. His earlobes shirked back as a shrill cry rang out around him. His rhythm was ceaseless. With each three seconds that passed, a new clobbering blow crashed into the tin, forcing it into an unnatural bend.
With each strike, David thought of blight. He thought of useless misery and pointless trials. But the lustrous metal complied, retaliating as necessary as the holder of its existence wreaked havoc on its form.
David had spent the day--at least since dawn--working on the roof of the damned house. The ugly latin-style shack was barren and fire-stricken from what the owner called a symbol of unrighteous hatred to fellow men. Mostly all that remained of the house before David had begun was a frame of wood with sparse tin roofing. The wood, though, was splintered in countless places and made the work too risky...but he had to accept; he just needed work.
Though, it had occurred to David that the owner of the fire shack never wore a gas mask or any sort of protection in the outside air. That made him a threat; that made Rufus Bernard infected. David made a note before Bernard left to stay clear of him. And since the man had left early in the morning to work in what the locals called a Quarentine, he had only worried about the filth in and around the house. So through the thick, dusty air, David swung his hammer into the soul of the house.
Deep heaves of breath came every few seconds through enumerated filters covering David's face. He turned his foot to better his stance and the brittle shingling beneath him gave way. With a quick, low grunt, he dropped the angular tin and clutched his bare hands onto a shard of splintered wood. Goggled eyes winced, but he pulled himself up until his boots regained a hold on the wood. Only then did he look at his hand. Out from split flesh protruded a shaft of rotted black wood. David pressed his lips together firmly as he pulled the shaft out from his hand, releasing the blood in a quick torrent.
"Mark," he called out over the silence.
From the other side of the roof came another man, shirtless and sweating just as badly as David. He was more muscular, but shorter and stockier than David. His mask matched that on David's face. The old wood creaked beneath the man's feet as he walked across the beams to his friend, dropping to a knee in the puddle of blood and rot that had been pried out of his flesh. "Christ," he deadpanned, reaching into his back pocket. He produced a tiny white aerosol can, shaking it in his right hand before handing it to David.
He shook the can himself and pressed the top, releasing a spray of tactilely bitter antiseptic into the wound. And once the meaty wound was covered, he tossed Mark the spray. "Should we follow our own rules, Mark?"
Mark found a sturdy beam and straddled it, wiping his forehead on his bare arm. "They're rules for a reason."
"Yeah, but she doesn't have to know."
"Half'a your hand's gutted, Dave."
"Good point," David murmured, his head turned out towards the coast. Shifting his shoulders back, he pulled his tank top off over his head and began wrapping the wound with the tight white fabric. His eyes lifted towards the distant water, peering through foggy goggles. "I remember a few years ago when the beach was still safe."
"Yeah, and it didn't smell like dead fish a half mile in."
"At least not most of the time."
"I miss the world," Mark pondered.
"I miss my hand," David deadpanned.
