Afternoon in July

Some pictures I snapped yesterday afternoon. Comments and critiques (no matter how small) would be lovely!








So, comments, questions, critiques. I would love them all. Tell me what I can improve on too. I'm gonna try to post on here more regularly and try to work on my 'skill' (if there is any) a little more...

I like them all. They're different and random. And cute.
You captured the subject of each picture well.
My facorites are the cat pictures and the tree picture.
I like the tree one because you captured the life of it well.
I like the cat picture because I love cats and my kitten won't stay still long enough for me to take a picture of her. :p

Thanks so much! I am using a Nikon D3000. It is a lovely camera, I am just using the standard lens it comes with in the photos too.

Some of these are really great! I'll go through and critique them one-by-one.

1) This might be my favorite. In some of the others, your light seems a little blue, which eats up some of the nice contrast you have. In this one, though, your focus is good and the highlights are solid (and have a vaguely warm look to them, which counteracts the blueness). I think I would have liked to see you frame it a little differently, so that we don't have the gap beneath her belly and leg near the middle bottom. However, all-in-all, I like this photograph.

2) I like the composition here a little bit better, but to me it seems extremely blue. When shooting in low light, this often happens...have you tried manually adjusting your light settings and adding a little red to counteract this? Otherwise it's a neat photograph, and certainly more creative than the first, I think. One thing that does bother me, though, is that you haven't straightened the step in your post-shot editing process. This makes everything feel tilted and really takes away from the impact of your image.

3) For some reason, there's something about this that just seems uninteresting. I think the concept is great, and looking back I can't see quite why it doesn't appeal to me. I think maybe it's a little flat, and there is no standout focal point to draw the eye. It's a very staticky sort of picture, but the idea is great. Maybe change your framing, adjust your light (it's a little monochromatic at the moment), and reevaluate what drew you to this concept in the first place.

4) This is okay. It's a little run-of-the-mill, and the big, amorphous dark patch in the bottom left is just distracting. Not my type of photo, really, although your composition is sound.

5) Low light again. There are no highlights here to make this an eye-catching photo, and so it turns out feeling washed out and a little "blah." Especially with flower photos, you have to have something that just immediately drags the viewer in, and I don't think this has that particular quality. It's a nice picture, just a little ordinary.

6) I like this one a lot better. You've put the focus in an odd place, which pulls the eye in a different way than it would had you focused on the closer flower. My only issue here is that, seeing the quality of your camera and its ability to focus, it still seems a little blurry at the focal point. If you made that just a little crisper it would be much more effective next time. But really this is an especially good photo.

7) Eh. It's hard to see what's going on here, and once we do, it's not a very interesting photo. I'm not a fan of ants, but I still don't find any artistic merit in seeing them crushed? =P

Anyway, these are very, very nice. Good job!

Thank you so much! I love getting big critiques and it is awesome that you went through and looked at each one. I think that I will try bringing up the red in some of these, and since I am pretty new at this thanks for catching the whole blue thing as I have no 'eye' for that stuff yet.

Wonderful photography!! Those cats are sooo cute I would love a Nikon My next big saving project after getting my own laptop...
But really. These pictures are wonderful. I really like the first two and the one of the tree, it seems very mysterious and beautiful.

... -straightens tie- erm... Lovely photos! Just a tiny review, because I cant actually find any obvious faults with the picture. Apart from the last photo, where the front daisy ain't visable! ITS A SHAME!

These are really good, I can't realy say much else as I'm really bad at reviewing photography. Suffice to say I couldn't do anything as good as this.

So, I hope you don't mind. I'm going to review all of these as one.. more of your style than your pictures. c:

I love the photographs of the cat... they're really quite beautiful, and you've managed to capture its personality in both of them.. great colors as well. I think that the rest of your photos could have had a better focus, but the focal points and lines were used very well.. great job in that. I also think that perhaps the contrast could have been played with in a couple of those..always fun to do that. c:
I wasn't terribly fond of the first two plant photos, but I think that problem could be solved with better focus, again. I also think that perhaps your photos would benefit with some play in the color saturation. Nothing terribly hard.. I just use Windows Live Gallery.. it's a program that came with my computer. I'm hopeless when it comes to Photoshop.


Overall.. great job. Definitely pursue photography.

I love picture 5. The contrast of the background colours and the vibrant flower colours is spectacular. I love how you've made the background soft, drawing attention to the flower.
