I wouldn't recommend investing in the programs required to do this kind of stuff unless you're seriously thinking about trying to get a job in the 3D media industry. For those of you who are interested, do a little price researching on these programs: 3D Studio Max or Maya, Mudbox, Adobe Photoshop, as well as the requirements to run them all. You'll soon find out why.
Anyway, here's my next bit of progress. I've just about finished the actuall 3D portion, now I need to get started on putting textures on them all. Also, don't mind of the handle looks a little weird, it's just how the light's hitting it.

Neat! What do the characters mean? It's cool how you got that much detail on such flat objects, but such detail might go unnoticed unless you're zoomed in reeeal close like in these pictures. By the way, can you count these sort of things as extra credit? Like for college. Just curious. Do you have a deadline? Or an approximated finish time?
This is pretty much an extra project I'm just doing for my own benefit, something that I can put in my demo reel that I'll send out to prospective employers.
As for the characters, I really couldn't say. Three years ago I might have been able to remember what they meant, but it's been so long that I've forgotten almost all the Kanji I've learned from my exchange student program to Japan. The only thing I could safely say is that the box looking character has something to do with the sun.
To tell you the truth, I'll actually surprised how well the textures on the handle guard have turned out. It's really hard to notice the object's seam with the way I textured it.
Did I explain unwrapping yet? I probably did, but I'll just say it again for those of you who missed it. Unwrapping is when you take the surfaces of a 3D object and spread them out across a 2D plane. You take that 2D plane into a program like Photoshop and use it as sort of a map to tell you where and how to paint all the different textures. You take the finished texture, slap it on the 3D object as a material, and you've got yourself a textured 3D model.

Here's the handle done with all the textures. Now all I need to do is the actual blade and the little metal bit that secures it to the handle. I went back to redo the scratches on the handle guard because a fellow student in my program pointed out that they look too random. Now the scratches are only on the areas that would actually make contact with another sword during a fight.

wow amazing, I will be learning some stuff like that soon in the course i'm going into. What program did you use to make it? Although Obviously digitally made the sword really resembles a real sword. well done!
