Sketches? Photos?

I figured I would put all my stuff in one topic, so it can be easily skipped over by people who'd rather not look at it. You know. Not that I am self-concious or anything. My sketches aren't that interesting, really--I mostly do comissions to supplement my otherwise insignificant income.



This one I was upset about. Dog on the left (Tully) has an overdeveloped lower jaw and I just couldn't get it right. Oh well. The owner liked it.



This guy wasn't paid for, just a sketch I did to pass the time.

You could use Paint for resizing your picture.

I think that the drawings are incredible although the pictures could use a bit of work. First the dogs and cow are beautifully drawn and look appealing. As I said your main problem is the photography. The first picture just seems wrong. There is nothing wrong with seagulls , but I just didn't think the setting was right. The thing that it is sitting on looks dirty and strange, and there is an absence of sky to look at. As for the second picture I think you did get the setting a bit better. Watch the camera when you take pictures, and try to make them as level as possible.

With the photographs, the seagull is perched on the top of a building. Do you think the composition is unbalanced, or do you mean that the setting is not quite right? Both photographs are actually level, my problem with the swimming pool one is that the benches are not flush against the wall, and so I ended up with a pseudo-crookedness. Since everything but the benches were in-line, I had to align with reference to those items.

Wow. The sketches are...superb. The realistic quality of both drawings is mind-blowing. I liked how the rope circles around the bull's - or is it a cow? - eye. Additionally, the gradation and shading is amazing.

As for the photographs, I can't really analyze them (due to a lack of personal photography experience), but one thing that struck me about the first one was that the blue rim of the building was sort of lost in the blueness of the sky. I liked how the seagull matched the white part of its perch, though.

An altogether excellent job!

Wow, Shepherd, your sketches are awesome!

The first, of the dogs, is really sweet. You can really see this happiness kind of twinkling in their eyes. It’s really cute. But of the two, I think the dog on the right does look a lot more lifelike. I think this actually has more to do with the fact that when you filled his coloring in, it seems a little smoother and the strokes aren’t as visible.

The second sketch is wonderful as well. I mean, it’s detailed and it’s just really sweet. *goes awwww*

As for the photographs, the second one makes me giggle. The first, to me, it lacks something or it has too much of something else. I can’t really put my finger on it. I think maybe it just doesn’t catch my eye all that well.

The second one, though, is very vivid and it has an amusing quality to it. I just looked at it was evident that she does not want to be there. But it’s a funny picture. The only thing I don’t like, of that whole image, is the color scheme they used on those walls. Shame, shame, shame!

Your sketches are awesome! I can't get over them. Oh my gosh! You need some work on your photos though.

1. I don't really know. It lacks something. It did pop out at me. I think because there is so much white and blue, but I just keep starring at it. Maybe there is too much to take in. I am not sure.

2. I actually really love this. Most people don't want to see something that isn't really pretty, but it is plain to see she DOESN'T want to be there. It is awesome. I think you could crop some of the top though, and her eyes are closed. Maybe the closed eyes add to the affect.

Oh wow, these are really neat, hahah.

I honestly don't see anything I could say that could help you improve with your sketches, you have quite a talent. You did much better than I could do, no matter how long I took on it, haha.

I don't really like the pictures as much, to be honest. The seagull picture was alright, but the swimming one was kind of boring and nothing interesting, if that makes sense? The sketches rock though.

The pics? Meh. They're not great. they don't have much focus and they're really just not that interesting or creative. The sketches, on the other hand, were really good. I love how they look well-drawn and are shaded right and everything, but at the same time still retain that "sketchy" look that a lot of people get rid of. It makes it look really pure and simple (in a good way).

The sketches, as everyone else said, are perfect, realistic, awesome, great, wonderfuly done... I have nothing to say that isn't some positive adjective or another. YOu have a wonderful talent.


The seagull photo. I'll try to say what hasn't already been said. Photography is just like art, the only difference being that you have to find your subject out in the real world instead of just letting your imagination take control. Ask yourself, as the talented artist you are, what's missing from this photo? What would you change to add your flare? Analyze photos you've taken with thoughts like these in mind, and you'll grow to learn what makes a good photo with your flare.

I'm not trying to sound like a know-it-all here, but I am trying, as a fellow (albeit weaker) artist to give you some tips from my personal experiences. All I know is that I have hundreds of photos from a few years ago which made/make me think things like, "Wow, how boring. It really neads a more unique subject," and "This sure could use a different angle." Whether your photo was perfect or lame you can learn from past snapshots.

Now I'm realizing I could've summed those two paragraphs up into a few words: Practice makes perfect, so keep taking photos.




Okay, now, the swimming one. The idea behind this is great, and your model (whether she knew she was or not ) has an awesome look on her face. It's probably what I looked like my first day of swim team; Exhausted, waterlogged, and annoyed by the whole 'gravity' thing. Model is great. However, the big pole, set smack dab in the middle, is very distracting. It seems to cut the picture in half, and being the only thing in focus, we can't drag our eyes away from it.

Also, it owuld have been better if you had taken a few steps to the right so that our model wasn't quite so far to the side. For some reason, our eyes don't like having to move. Having to look way over there to the side just physically doesn't work. There's also the rule of thirds, which says to draw two lines down and two lines across your layout, deviding the piece into nine equal pieces, and then place points of interest along those lines. How I would have laid this out is like this:



Because the head is right along those lines, our eye is more naturally attracted to it, and it's easier for us to notice the face and have the emotion set for the photo.


That's all I have to say. Never in a million years stop drawing, and keep taking photos!

Okay, so maybe I should stop taking pictures then! I am glad you all like the sketches. I'm actually not terribly pleased with these two in particular. And, for the person who asked, the calf is a heifer named Leptir ("butterfly").

they don't have much focus

A twofold problem, I am afraid. I am not lucky (or rich!) enough to have an expensive camera, and so I am not given the option for manual focus. Instead, I must rely on my camera's ability to focus itself, which is dubious at best.

Also, I had to reduce the dpi on these images in order to post the photos without blowing up your computers.

That was a long way of saying that they are as in-focus as they are going to get!

I think you are right about how I need to look at my photographs, although I am far from a professional photographer. I try to avoid the "posed" look, so I end up with lots of weird faces. I am indeed aware of the law of thirds, but I like to treat it more as a suggestion! I think I would agree with you under many circumstances, but in this case I think altering the girl's position would have taken much of the unique-ness out of the photograph. Because she has a blue swimsuit on, I think it draws the eye more than it would normally. And I was upset about the net. Finally I decided to put it in the middle where it would be less distracting and where I didn't feel that it would unbalance the photo.

Oh! And I do remember that, right out of frame, there was another girl (to the left of this one). When I shifted right, I had her too, and I felt that wasn't as strong of a composition.

Holy awesome. You are the artist I want to be personified. Your sketches are just... bloody brilliant. Okay, now that I've gotten that out.

You pictures aren't as spectacular. Or... well...spectacular at all. I'm not gonna nitpick more, because I think everyone else has covered everything. Don't stop taking pictures, though! One, you can only get better, and two, it's a super-fun hobby.

Keep drawing! Seriously. You better. If you stop I will send out death rays with my mind.
