"I think we should call him and tell him to meet us somewhere. What do you think?" I said after about an hour of searching for Logan. My feet hurt like hell.
"I think," he looked over at me, "that is a great idea." He pulled out a cellphone and dialed a number. He placed it to his ear and started speaking into it. "Logan, it's Landon. We need to talk." There was some talking back and then, I think, there was yelling. "Logan, listen, man, I need to show you something." There was some more talking, thank the gods no more yelling. They finally decided where and when to meet up. Landon shut his phone and put it away. "Okay so we are going to meet him in the Courtyard at eight." He said. "So we better start walking."
We walked down the road, toward what thought was the way to town, in silence. I walked along side him, sneaking side glances at him every once in a while. His face was looking like he was battling the elements, but somehow the look worked to his advantage. The dirt smudges highlighted his cheekbones. It looked a if he was a warrior, fighting for his land. It was kinda hot.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" he asked.
"I never thought you would be so nice. I had thought that-"
"Logan was the nice one and I was the one who just stood there and never talked." He smirked and looked over at me.
I looked down sheepishly, to hide my blushing face. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to judge you, it's just that you came off, like you were the king and a little arrogant. I didn't know that it would change."
"Oh yeah, well then, Miss Rose Wheeler, when did that change?" We had stopped walking, and were looking at each other intently. My eyes searched his face for any sight of joking. There was none.
"My judgement changed when you saved my life, then when you were kind to me afterwards." I looked at him. A grin spread slowly across his face. "I realize now that you're not the guy I thought you were." I stepped closer. Now only a few feet were between us.
"Really?" He asked as he closed the space in between us.
"Really." I said. Landon stood at least half a foot taller than me. My head tilted up and his tilted down. We hovered there for a moment, my breath very shaky. Then his lips brushed against mine. His lips were soft against mine. I hooked my arms around his neck as he put his hand to the small of my back. My mind escaped me. It was like all the worries in the world went away. It was wonderful, until Landon's phone started ringing.
I started to pull away when he murmured, "I'll call them back" against my lips.
As much as I didn't want to stop, I said, "Answer it. It could be the most important phone call in your entire life." I pulled away as he answered the damn phone.
There was some talking on the other line and then Landon put the phone away.
"Who was it?" I asked as we started walking again hand in hand.
"It was that stupid Carter kid wondering if you were all right." He said. His face portrayed his anger.
"Why are you so mad?" I said.
"I don't like him. At all. He left you there by yourself. No man can leave a girl behind while facing darkness. What if Logan and I hadn't been there? You could be dead. What if we were to late? What if I couldn't have saved you? What if-" He was rambling on when I interrupted him.
"Exactly. What if? You were there in time and you did save me." I said. I squeezed his hand.
"You know what," he said, "I like your thinking." He bent down and his lips brushed my cheek briefly, but it was enough to make me blush slightly.
"We're going to be late meeting Logan. C'mon." I let go of his hand and started walking. He quickly caught up and took my hand in his own.
I breached the topic that was in the back of my mind. "So what do we tell Logan. You did say he thought I was dead. How do we fix that?"
"Oh, well, um . . ." He mumbled something I couldn't make out.
"You have no damn idea, do you?" I said. "How about we just tell him the truth?"
"That is a great idea, my dear." He looked down and smiled at me.
