Prologue
Odd, how in this most dire situation, I noticed and remembered the most mundane of details; things that I never would’ve given a second glance to any other time, I now found myself suddenly infatuated with. As I looked down at my feet, pounding the soft, mossy ground like a cheetah’s athletic paws, I realized that on the white tips of my Converse, the heart I had drawn nearly a year ago with black pen was fading and bleeding off. You could see all the individual pen marks, all the colors in the ink. Red, yellow, green. How fascinating… a color so dark and dreary was made of brighter things. How I managed to discover all this about my nondescript footwear while running at top speed, I had no idea.
I heard footsteps in the distance, gaining on me. They echoed off the trees and through the misty fog, striking fear into my heart. I pushed my legs, pushing forward, pushing away. I had to save those I love, if I could not save myself. Perhaps once I was gone, he would be satisfied and leave them all peacefully. My own death seemed unavoidable and inevitable; I just hoped my friends and family would not be taken down with me.
To see if they were still guarding me like two heavenly angels on earth, I looked up to the sky and saw my hawks there – the stunning, strong, rusty brown one, the dreamlike white falcon. They soared in circles protectively above my head.
Though they were smaller than me, smaller than him, something about the way they carried themselves made me believe they were divine and much more than what they appeared.

^^ So this is a new novel I may or may not start, depending on what people think of it. It's supposed to be short; just a quick little section to draw the reader in.
