It is the year 1902, in a world that is almost like ours, but not quite. Countries are almost the same, but noticeably different. Ideologies have suffered the same fate as well. And behind the scenes, Nature itself works to further the advancement of the planet. To do so, however, sometimes great sacrifices must be made.

And that is why we are here, in the North Atlantic on December 22nd. For the ocean liner SMV Autumn is the focus of one such sacrifice. A feeling of an approaching doom is upon the ship, though it is undetectable save to those who are sensitive to such things. Nature has planned something for the vessel. And those who would use these plans are there as well. Some are there to save lives; preservation via transmutation. Some are there to ensure the plans are carried out. And some are there to take a chance at rewriting history and saving a world that might not even exist yet. But not all is set in stone yet, and events still must play out.

*

Okay, what we have here boys and girls is an Alternate History Fantasy Storybook. As said in the fun little two paragraph blurb up there, things are a little different in this world. England is The Golden Kingdom, and is a bit more pure and kind with its imperialist policy. The White Court is the Russia analogue, strong but with a big isolationist policy. The Affiliation takes up the eastern half of North America. They're big into this world's Industrial Revolution. In the western half of the continent is Mandaroza, an odd independent state composed of humans and centaurs, and the only place in this world where the latter creatures may be found.

Another big thing that needs to be explained are Sentinels and Adepts. Sentinels are animal spirits. They keep watch over certain groups of animals, and have names that reflect which group they watch over. Adepts are their servants and hands in human society, disguised of course. They are either animals given the ability to masquerade as humans, or humans who have been accepted by a Sentinel. They are not perfect though. Though all animals in this world are sentient to a degree, they still have instincts. And the instincts of Adepts often make them appear awkward in normal social interaction. Also, they cannot simply switch between their human and animal forms at will. When they attempt to do so, they disappear for an hour, then reappear as the other form. They only perceive this as having taken a few seconds, though.

*

Now that the state of the world and the Sentinels/Adepts have been somewhat explained, we can get down to the meat and potatoes of this storybook. The setting is the ocean liner Autumn, sailing from Dublin to New Avalon over Christmas. And before you start asking, yes, this is this world's version of the Titanic. It makes it easy that way. Same big to do about the ship. Which ties into Nature's plans for it. This ship represents the peak of what humanity is able to really accomplish at this point in time. Nature is considering sinking it to send a sort of message to humanity, as if to say that for all their works they are still bound to it.

Some are here to take advantage of that. Orca, Sentinel of Whales, has sent two Adepts on the ship to be ready in case it does sink. Their task is to save as many of the passengers as possible by accepting them in Orca's name. They will become whales, but will be spared from death. Barringer, an Adept of Dog, has infiltrated the ship with the explicit purpose of causing it to sink, by steering it into an ice field.

But there is more to this voyage than just these two parties and their plans. There are the ordinary people, those who have no clue that this is going on and seek only arrival in New Avalon so that they might carry on with their lives. They have parts too to play in all of this, caught up in these machinations.

The way I see it, there will be the 22nd and the 23rd for character development and interaction, of arranging the plots and forming alliances. Then, the plot starts to move. It will continue until the morning of the 25th. And don't worry, I've got a pretty good idea of what points should happen when, but with enough leeway for the actions of players to have an actual effect on the plot.

That being said, I'm going to put a character sheet here, so that it is obvious who is playing what character. Those of you who may have seen a preliminary character sheet may notice the omission of two fairly important characters. Rest assured they will still be taking part, I simply want to keep them a sort of surprise for anyone who might be following along.

Mr. Universe- Conrad Rice

Martha Denizen- Rosey Unicorn

Ruth, Adept of Orca- sunstarfrozenlife

Barringer, Adept of Dog- Kara Hargreaves

Thomas, Adept of Orca- Apple

Patrick Nodens- kidashka

Joseph Matthews- Lumierre

Also, rules! There must be rules sadly. But they will not be too strict of rules.

* For one, I would like those participating to be able to post regularly. All that means is that I ask people to please keep pace with the story. I don't think that it will be too hard with this though.

*Also, all the rules of good writing ought to be observed here, nice grammar and whatnot.

*Posts should be around three or four long sentences at minimum, and cannot be simply filler. I am making it so little because at the beginning there is a good chance this might be dialogue heavy, and I am aware that it can be hard to negotiate that kind of stuff and cram in about 200 words per post.

* Also, minor god-moding is allowed. You can technically say that other characters do things, so long as A.) it is not out of character for them, and B.) they are doing something that ranks below throwing a punch or kissing. Notice that I said below. That means other characters may not do these two things if you are not controlling them, but that anything that is not quite so severe is probably going to fly.

All that being said, I hope that we are able to start soon and that this will end up being a very fun and fulfilling storybook.

All right, so all spots have been filled. Now I need character sheets from you guys, based off of the little things I gave you. Feel free to expand and make these characters your own. Just fill out something similar to what I have and you will be fine.

Name: Mr. Universe

Age: 15,000, give or take.

Job: Preserver of the timeline.

Description: An immigrant from a possible future.

Height: 6' 1''

Appearance: Appears to be a young man, about 19 or 20, with short brown hair, wearing semi-nice period clothing.

History: Mr. Universe has been around almost since the time when people began to learn to speak. He has varied powers that he uses to help those around him, and has popped up at points in history when he is needed. He and Orca are heterosexual life partners, and so Mr. Universe frequently helps out the Sentinel when he can.

A fellow troper! :D

Ahem. On to the profile.

Name: Barringer

Age: 27

Job: Adept of Wolf (Dog?)

Description: Barringer knows he's awkward in his human body, and he hates himself for having to use it. He believes himself superior to humans and finds people barbaric. He despises social interaction but if forced to will rely on natural charm. However, once he makes a personal appearance he won't seem half as suave and smooth with words. Tries to stay as still as possible in his lanky and "useless" human body. Has a tendency to snarl at strangers.

Barringer is actually a girl, cross-dressing as a guy. He often bulks up in clothes in order to appear as a he. No one will notice he is actually a she unless they are pervs who are trying very, very hard. He hates women, believing them to be inferior to men.

For consistency purposes I will refer to Barringer as he. Or unless he is revealed to be a she to the majority of the characters anyway.

Height: 5'5"

Appearance: Has silvery hair and amber eyes, like his wolf form. His nails are long and sharp (though manicured) and his canines are longer than normal such that when he bites his lip he bleeds. He looks girlish, not even androgynous. A definite pretty boy because, well, he is not really a he.

History: Barringer has little to no recollection of his past as he does his best to block it out. As a child, a group of human hunters found Barringer and proceeded to have their fun. Little Barringer was left alone to die until the Sentinel found her and took pity on her.

Barringer's parents did not take well to the news that s/he had been abused. They tried to cover it up and her/his father, already disliking his wife for her inability to give him a male heir and despising his daughter for simply being a girl, almost disowned her. But having no choice, Barringer's father brought him up to be a strong leader. Somewhere along her prepubescent years Barringer started dressing up in boy's clothes and presenting himself as a boy. His father said nothing about it, and did not even protest when Barringer left to become an adept of Dog.

Barringer's mother died before he turned 10, and Barringer has never quite looked at the human race the same way since that incident with the hunters, never mind the fact that he used to be human.

So now that I have some idea on the history...

Name: Martha Denizen

Age: 21

Job: Daughter of the owner of the Blue Circle Ocean Liner Company (Who owns the Autumn)

Description: Bubbly and fun, she loves being on all levels on the ship and seeing who is on board. She's also assertive and independent, not afraid to speak her mind in the slightest. She can, sometimes, have a temper.

Hight: 5'6"

Appearance: African, with long, very curly hair that she's often pushing out of her face thanks to the sea breeze. Her build is slimmer and she's almost always smiling.

History: She grew up close to her father, and sat in on many meetings. She learned to assert her opinions against a roomful of men who didn't often think Martha could hold her own. From her mother she gained a sense of being personable, and her love of being with the variety of people on the ship.

Name: Joseph Matthews

Age: 34

Job: Honorably-dismissed militant

Description: A former soldier from Mandaroza returning from ten years of mercenary work in the Winter Court on the edge of the Sleeping Land. He is often withdrawn, but proves friendly after enough coaxing.

Height: 5'11"

Appearance: As is standard in Mandaroza's forces, he wears a simple attire of a dark gray uniform covering body armor. His eyes and hair are both the same dark gray shade, and he keeps his hair tied back at all times. On his side he keeps a holstered, low-grade pistol (differently designed than the modern pistols of primary society).

History: Joseph hails from a rich family of tradesmen native to a village within Mandaroza. His father swore when Joseph was a small child that he would follow in his footsteps in the mercantile world, but Joseph fell in love with combat at the age of twelve. What first began as an affinity for the slingshot became an obsession with anything that could harm--or protect-- an individual. At age nineteen, he entered the military for his country and served his way up the ranks until being launched on a mission to the edge of the Sleeping Land in hopes of quelling growing boundary issues.

He now seeks to return home aboard the RMS Autumn to make his own mark on the merchant's world in the business of mercenary work.

Here and ready to post! :pirate3: Argh!!

Name: Thomas

Age: 23

Job: Adept of Ocra.

Description: A mischievous man who loves the lime light. Not one for sitting back and watching, Thomas is a man who is often the life of the party. People find him infuriating because of his nature, though he doesn't seem to care.

Height: 6' 4''

Appearance:
Thomas's hair is medium-short, looking rather fluffy in a refined sort of way. His eyes are an emerald green, flecks of several tones glittering about each iris, enhanced by his hair color. His chin and prominent cheekbones are slightly feminine, giving him a softer look but his strong jawline provides a masculine touch.

History: Thomas has always been a follower of Ocra, even when he was younger he liked was Ocra aspired for. It was when he was older that he became an adept that he truly started to marvel.

It's been only one day since the last person (you) posted their profile.

I live! Sorry about that. Was flying on planes and things on Saturday, and spent most of today crashing. But fear not! I approve of these profiles you set before me, though I must say that this is a somewhat "romance-light" storybook. Your characters can feel affection for each other, no doubt, but we can't have any declarations of true love or the finding of soul mates. There are only a few days here, remember. Not long enough for such attachments.

With that being said, we shall begin. It is the morning of the 22nd in the storybook. Mr. Universe and Martha Denizen are starting out on the highest deck. Everyone else, feel free to mingle and talk wherever you please.

And here. we. go.

*

The black steel of the Autumn’s hull cut through the cold waters of the North Atlantic. It was a powerful ship, displaying no problem at making good time on its voyage across the sea. There was no doubt that it would arrive in New Avalon on the 28th, if everything went according to plan.

All along its decks the passengers mingled. They did not mingle too much though. The boundaries of the social classes still had to be respected, after all. If such things were not done, why, there was no telling what kinds of mishaps and anarchy might take place. There might be change, the lower classes might run amok wherever they pleased. Such things could not be. How then could society function, if every man did whatever he pleased? So there was order, and in that order there was stability.

On the upper decks was where the majority of the first class passengers congregated. Few of the second class felt brave enough to weather both the cold wind and the harsh stares. None of the third class were courageous enough at all. They knew they had no protection from the wrath of their betters, so they did not risk raising it.

It was here that Martha Denizen stood, as befitting her status as the daughter of the owner of the ship. And it was here that he stood, he of the long coat and the top hat, with that playful smile and a childish gleam in his eyes. He walked up a step or two beside Martha, not too close though, and looked out over the sea.

“Amazing, isn’t it?” he asked her.

Thomas, adept of Ocra:

The sound of soft music echoed across the inside of the walls. Lit up with chandelier lights, couples sat at thin tables sucking on rich champagne. Soft chatter ran through the room as people mingled together, their fine accents reaching around the room. Women wore fancy gowns that reached the floor in many layers. Men wore suits that looked so expensive that it’ll make any ordinary man’s blood run thin. Everything was so graceful.

Dipping my finger into the prawn sauce, I licked at the top. Grinning as the sour taste beckoned at my tongue, I straightened my posture. “Nice ship, ain’t it?” Ruth turned around pursing her lips at me. She held firmly onto a glass of champagne, her gloved hands were decorated with white gems.

Bending over I stared at my reflection with the large studs. Barring my teeth I checked for any missing pieces of food. Ruth pushed at my shoulder sending me stumbling back. “Don’t be a fool, Thomas! And this ‘ain’t a nice ship’. No, it’s an exclusive ship which has a design that hasn’t been matched by others. Now please, behave and speak like you know some manners.” She hissed out raged.

I scoffed insulted, “Ruth you know me well enough by now! I don’t like speaking in your ‘lil etiquette tongue. Why, I speak like a bloody barbarian!” An older woman turned and stared at me, offended by my use of words. “What’s shaking sweaty?” I dipped my head at her, grinning widely.

“Oh don’t mind him ma’am, he’s a little delirious from the bright lights.” Ruth quickly stepped in smiling innocently. “I should hope so,” the lady walked briskly away from the table glancing back momentarily. Ruth grabbed on to my ear, pulling my down to her level.
“Are you insane!?”
I spy!

Martha turned to see a young man about her age standing a few steps away from her. Her frown at where he came from was quickly dismissed by the smile gracing his lips. She wondered if he was a first or second class passenger, but she figured that anybody coming to talk to her would be a first class passenger.

"It is amazing," she said, glancing back at the ocean. "And when the sun sets..."

He nodded. "Breathtaking, I will say."

Martha put her hand over her mouth, laughing quietly. "I'm sorry, I never introduced myself. I'm Martha Denizen."

He smiled that eternal, seemingly unflappable smile of his, took off his top hat, and bowed his head a little. “How do you do then, Martha Denizen? I must say that it is quite a pleasure to meet you, and to share in this natural beauty with you.”

He smiled and looked back out over the waves for a moment or two. Did he know what was coming? Perhaps. Perhaps he knew exactly what sort of doom hung over the Autumn. But if he did, he did not show it. Such was his nature.

“It’s a shame that people don’t really stop to see it though,” he said again to Martha, almost absentmindedly. “But, tis an unfortunate part of our reality, I guess. All we can do is keep up our best.” He shook his head. “Pardon me. I tend to ramble on.”
