Chapter Two

I slammed the door shut and twisted the lock. Glancing over at mom I noticed that she was looking at me as if I had gone mad. "Lily?" She asked worriedly. Frowning I shook my head "It's nothing mom." With one last worried look she turned back to the food "Dinner is in five." "Okee Dokee." Hiking up the groaning stairs I pushed open the door of what was supposed to be my room. I chewed on the inside of my cheek as I looked around at the old room.

Wrinkling my nose I entered the room. It was so dusty and the furniture was wrapped in plastic covers. Another thing that I hated about moving to old houses was the fact that mom never brought furniture. We always used what was already there. With my pointer finger and thumb I pinched the incredibly dusty cover up and pulled it off in a single giant swoop. I sneezed three times as I placed it in the corner. Going around the room I ripped all the plastic coverings off of the furniture. "Dinner!" Mom called. I gladly left the room and went down the stairs.

Normally I would have slid down the banister but a)it's extremely dusty and b)I'm afraid it might break under me. I mean, my mom was lucky I was even walking on the stairs, let alone the floor. As I entered the kitchen the wondrous smell of chicken soup filled my nose. I thought that I heard a sigh but ignored it. Lowering myself carefully into the chair I began quickly eating my soup. This meal was quiet. They usually were but today it's an eerie kind of quiet.

Hopping out the seat I wiped my mouth with my sleeve "I'm going to sleep. 'Night." With that I climbed the stairs carefully and went back to my new room. I shed my jeans and t-shirt and exchanged them for sweatpants and a bed t-shirt. Sliding under the old itchy quilts I turned off the side table light and slowly fell asleep to what sounded like someone breathing.

With a yawn I stretched and rolled over. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes I groggily dragged myself out of bed. Literally. I had to get onto the floor and pull myself up. Forgetting how old the house was I jogged down the stairs to the kitchen "Morning mom." I said through a yawn. She took a bite of cereal and looked at me. Her jaw dropped and so did her cereal. She had a horrified expression on her face "Lily, it's bad enough that you dress like a boy but seriously? You had to ruin your hair too?"

I reached for my hair at my back. It wasn't there. My hand kept going up until I was literally near touching my head. I bolted into the bathroom and looked into the mirror. My hair was cut shaggy and died black. My long blond hair was gone. I pulled at my hair and felt like screaming. "How the heck?" I said to myself. Giggling came from the hallway but when I looked out no one was there. I went to the kitchen and mom gave a sigh "Lily, it's your first day of school and you ruined your hair. You're going to look like a boy today."

I pulled at my extremely short hair and said "Mom, it's not my fault! I didn't do it!" She rolled her eyes and closed her magazine "Lily, I don't mind it as much when you're honest but I do when you lie. Now hurry up and get dressed or you'll be late for the bus." With an overly dramatic sigh I stomped up the steps hoping they would crack and make me fall in. It didn't happen. When I unzipped my suitcase I pulled out my baggy jeans and black t-shirt. Trading my pajamas for them I went back downstairs. Again.

Mom handed me money and said "For lunch. Wake up earlier tomorrow." I snatched the money from her grasp and stomped out of the rickety house to the bus stop a ten minute walk away.

When I finally got to the bus stop I had just made it. The bus was just about to leave when the driver spotted me. I ran to it and climbed up the stairs. What is it with all these stairs today? I thought to myself. Several girl looked me over and I felt myself blush. Not how I wanted things to go on my first day. I claimed a seat by myself and sat in silence until I guy plopped next to me "Hey dude. I'm Chris. How 'bout you?" I glared at him and said "My name is Lily." His face twisted and said 'Isn't that a girls name?" Rolling my eyes I said frustratedly and rather loudly "That's because I'm a girl!" I sat back and sighed "Jeez."
