One: Discovery
“Mama the water is boiling!” I yelled excitedly jumping up and down by the black stainless steel stove. I stood up the tip of my toes and leaned against the edge of the stove. Bubbles began to rise to the surface of the water, and disappear like magic. My eyes widened with amazement as they magically disappeared, and I clapped enthusiastically like the little kid I was.
My mother then came into the kitchen her white silky nightgown grazing against the wooden floor, contrast to her milk chocolate skin. She tilted her head to one side; while a mass of curly black hair shifted to the left side of her face. Her gray eyes analyzed my excitement, and a smile slowly crept across her face.
“Honey, what is all this excitement first?” She asked walking over to where I was standing.
“The water is boiling!” I yelled pointing to the pot,” It’s like magic, because it disappears and comes back!”
“Honey, you see this all time” She said peering over the pot and then turning her face towards mine.
“Yea, I know but its so”, I paused for a while thinking of the right word,” magical”.
I thought about the word I chose and then smiled to myself.
“Oh you silly, silly girl”, she began stroking my hair that was almost as curly as hers.
The doorbell suddenly rang with the familiar ding-dong tune, and I turned around to my mother who was peering out of the kitchen archway.
“Mama you said it was only going to be me and you at our tea party”, I whined my face forming into a pout.
“Don’t worry honey it will be besides your papa will answer the door”.
She walked away towards the kitchen cabinet, and carefully began pulling out the high glossed porcelain flower decorated teacups for our tea party.
The doorbell rang again with the common tune.
“William!” she said calling out my father’s name, “Answer the door.”
“I’m watching the game”, he replied back in a groggy voice.
“I don’t even know why I married you sometimes” she replied back to him and then facing me,” You think you can grab the rest of the cups?”
“Yeah”, I said already grabbing my step stool in order to reach the high height.
A white river of silk followed her footsteps into the living room, and I began proceeding on taking the teacups down. I heard the door creak open a bit before my mother scream.
“Oh my!” she yelled.
Startling me the delicate teacup handle slipped from my fingers and landed with a smash on the floor.
“Uh-Oh”, I said my eyes wide with fear. I quickly began rushing to grab a dustpan while my mother began talking to the stranger at the front door.
“Are you surprised by me?” the stranger asked in an alluring luscious voice.
“N-n-n-not one bit Melinda in fact I was waiting on y-y-your arrival”, my mother stammered.
“Humph” the woman said pompously,” It seems you have settled quite a bit”.
“Well you don’t get married for any reason”, my mother said jokingly letting out a nervous giggle.
On my knees I quickly began sweeping up shattered cup, and brushing them into the dustpan. Now off of my knees I discarded the broken cup, and went the corner between our kitchen and living room. I peered around the corner to sneak a peek at the mysterious stranger who was delaying my party.
Once I saw her face I suddenly realized why the wait was so long. The most beautiful person I had ever seen was standing in the doorway. Her hair was a shiny glowing honey blond, her golden skin shimmered as the sun began to set outside, and I felt as if I were drowning in her ocean blue eyes. I stared at the woman as she still spoke to my mother, charmed at how beautiful she was.
“Well I saw what I wanted I guess I’ll come back at a later time”, she breathed a deep breath, and turned around and slowly walked away.
My mother slowly began closing the door when my father asked, “Who was that?”
“An old, old friend of mine”, her hands flew up to her face and she began shaking her head back and forth frantically.
“Hun you okay?” my father William asked with a hint of concern in his voice.
“Yes, I’m just a little surprised that’s all”.
“Mama” I said quietly poking my head around the corner a little more.
“Oh Annabelle!” she said rushing over to me with her arms open as if to receive a hug.
“Mama, mama, mama”, I said over and over again.
Startled in a cold sweat I woke up from my terrifying dream that seemed somehow real. I glided my hand across my forehead only to feel my hand as wet as drenched washcloth. I slowly breathed in and out trying to calm myself. Never in the 15 years of my mother’s disappearance had I dreamt of her. I always pondered how she suddenly left, and why no one ever mentioned of knowing anything. Although I knew much of my mother, and never could quite capture a complete picture of her. I remember her long curly black hair, brown skin, and loving personality. Yet I can never get a clear picture of her whenever a thought of her comes to me. I quietly sat in my bed for a few moments putting myself together before I played Octavio’s “Viva Voice”, and drifted into a less realistic dream.
