Bronwyn
Jonathan pulled up to this…jail cell. Seriously. I have never seen Adams before, and it feels like I’m being taken to jail.
The main building is huge and brick. The windows are darkly tinted so we can’t see anything from the outside. I look at Josephine. She’s staring out the other window. It’s a bright green field, with horse arenas, and archery ranges. It’s beautiful, apart from the actual school.
“What do you think it’s gonna be like?” Jo asks. I look at her.
“Scary, prank-filled.” I say. Jo looks at me. Fear is filling her eyes.
“Please let the pranks be mediocre.” Jo says. I stare at the school. We pull up through a circular driveway. Jonathon puts the car in park.
“We have arrived, Ladies.” He said, getting out of the car. We get out of the car as he opens the truck to take out our suitcases. I am scared. I have never been this scared before.
“Scared?” Jo asks me. I look at her and raise an eyebrow.
“Shitless.” I whisper back. There’s a light wind that makes the situation seem almost playful. I pull my jacket closer.
“This way, ladies.” Jonathan called. The wind is playing with his trench coat. For a brief second, I consider telling him that trench coats aren’t in style. He is already walking without looking back. Jo grabs her bags and starts to follow. I grab my bag, take a deep breath and follow.
We go though the outer doors.
“Now, ladies, the other students are at lunch.” Jonathan told us. We nod, at a loss for words. He leads us to a set of stairs.
“Leave your bags here.” Jonathan instructs. “I will handle them. The Mess Hall is right up those stairs.” We let go of our bags and start to ascend to staircase.
“Maybe this is all a mistake.” I say, “Maybe we should just go back to Stoker.”
“Too late, Wyn.” Jo replies. We push the door open, and we are greeted by a huge dining room. The floors are solid oak and the walls are painted a rich brown. There are only two tables. Girls are at one, guys are at the other. My mother spots me. I shoot her a timid smile. She grins back at me.
“Who are they?” Jo points at two very cute guys. She’s starting one with black hair. She narrows her eyes at him and he turns back to the table.
“Eh, he’s probably not scared.” I say, “These are Adams kids. They’re tough,” I drag out the word ‘tough’. We laugh, and the guys stare.
“Bronwyn!” My mom rushes up. I haven’t seen her since the begging of the year. She’s still the same. Tall, imposing and beautiful, “Josephine.” She says. Josephine nods.
“Hello, Headmistress.” She says formally. I nudge her. The black haired guy walks up to us, slowly.
“Ah, William. This is my daughter, Bronwyn and her friend Josephine.” MY mother says.
“Welcome.” He says. We lock eyes. His are an intense stormy gray. I register that he’s saying something. I’m swept into his eyes.
“YES! We are very excited” Jo nearly shout in my ear. She has successfully snapped me out of his eyes.
“Yes, I am very excited, thank you.” I say. I don’t mean to be so formal. It just turns out that way.
“Heres’ the deal.” William says, “Those girls are going to be non-stop pranking you all week.” My mother turns away, seemingly satisfied with us talking to another students.
“So?” I ask.
“Stick with me and you won’t be pranked.” William said.
“So, what do I call you?” I ask.
“Just call me Will.” William told me. Jo has wandered away. She’s sitting at the girls’ table, laughing like they’re her best friends.
“Impressive actress.” Will said, motioning to her. I look at her.
“I think she’s serious.” I say, “With Jo, you can never tell.” Will looks at me.
“What about you?” He asks.
“You’ll never know with me, either.” I smile and wink. Then, as if on cue, my mother drags me away.
“What do you think?” She asks, “No matter. Here are your schedules and rooms for both you and Josephine. Go and change now because skinny jeans are not part of the uniform.” My mother turns back to the head table. I cross over to grab Josephine.
“Hey, ladies, this is Bronwyn.” Jo says, “Wyn, this is Layla and Cara.” Layla smiles.
“Hey.” Cara said. I sit beside her.
“Jo, I got our room assignments.” I say. “I’m in thirteen and your in fourteen.” Cara smiles.
“Your with me.” Cara says. I nod.
“So.” Jo says, “I saw you with that William kid.”
“Will’s a nice kid.” I shrug, “Cara, can you show me to our room? Headmistress says we have to change.” Cara nods and get up from the table.
“Sure.” She says.
I change into the still green uniform of the Adams academy. Skirt down to my knees, white blouse, and leather jacket over top. Perfect. I sling my bag over my shoulder and exit my dorm room.
“That jacket isn’t part of uniform.” Cara tells me.
“I know.” I say. She pushes her pull brown hair out of her eyes. What a way to start off a new school.
